Chris Mortensen reports the San Diego Chargers are wrestling with the idea of making Drew Brees an unrestrictive free agent perhaps gambling his shoulder surgery would have a chilling effect on interested teams.

Recently the Chargers made an initial contract offer to Brees. Should the Chargers elect to franchise Brees his 2006 salary as a franchise or transition player would be approximately $9.7 million.

Last year Brees threw for 3,576 yards and 24 touchdown passes. Over the past two seasons his passer rating of 96.1 ranks fifth in the NFL.

That shoulder was f'd up. No way he comes back full strength this year. I felt bad for the guy, but that was tempered by the fact that the Chargers will have nothing but uncertainty.

As I understand he shouldn't even miss some of the camps.

Finally.

Philip Rivers should have been starting two years ago. Too bad though, I wish we could have had a shot to get Rivers.

This year my QB target is Jay Cutler, Next year.. Brady Quinn.

I'm in with Quinn, but Cutler is this years OPOTY (Overrated prospect of the year).

Good move by the Chargers. Why pay nine million for damage goods? Take the cash & spend it on other players. Grab a vet for minimum salary & hand the keys to Rivers.

Watching probowl coverage...and ESPN still refers to the Chargers as the greatest team not to make the playoffs...unreal...

I agree.

As sad as it is they should really just hand Rivers the starting gig and go about their business.

Letting him test the waters is smart. Rivers is tehre future, they have too much money in him not to be,.

Rivers will do just fine. They could use the money elsewhere. They are really close to getting to the superbowl.

Drew Brees is a proven QB. He is extremely accurate and makes good decisions. His arm strength isn't Carson Palmer level but he can a chuck a deep ball now and again. He is the perfect fit for a west coast offense and certainly a run first PA pass team. I've never understood why so many people are eager to dump Brees and get Rivers in.

I have trouble seeing Phillip Rivers develop very quickly or fast enough for fans. I certainly don't believe that a team that many consider to be close to the super bowl should change to a rookie QB now that all the pieces are almost in place. By the time he is ready (assuming that he isn't a bust) how can they be so sure that their team will still be firing on all cylinders?

I understand that they have a lot of money wrapped up in Rivers, but that shouldn't be a reason to dump the signal caller that's established a successful chemistry with your team already. Injury or no.

I think Drew Brees' shoulder is fine and will be healed by the time the season starts. He is a good qb and I also don't know why they want to get rid of brees to put in rivers. If they were smart they should keep Brees and trade rivers for a high round draft pick. But whatever they do im cool with it, because the Broncos always gets the better of the chargers/brees, and if they decide to go with rivers, well we all saw the last regular season game didn't we;D
