I propose we limit this to 24 teams and draft in a serpentine fashion to make things more fair for teams picking late.

http://www.profootballhof.com/assets/hof/mug1360.jpgLawrence Taylor, an All-America at North Carolina, was the first-round draft pick of the New York Giants and the second player selected overall in the 1981 NFL Draft. The 6-3, 237-pound linebacker set the tone for his pro career with an outstanding rookie season during which he recorded a career-high 133 tackles, 9.5 sacks, 8 passes defensed, two forced fumbles, a fumble recovery and an interception.

A dominant force on defense, Taylor was named first-team All-Pro in each of his first nine seasons. His ability to dominate a game with his attack style changed the outside linebacker position from a read-and-react posture to an aggressive mode.

An intense player, he had the speed to run past offensive linemen and the strength to out-muscle them. Starting in Taylor’s first season, the Giants began a 10-season streak in which they made the playoffs six times and won two Super Bowls.

Although Taylor’s accomplishments are many, he recorded his finest statistical season in 1986 when he was named the NFL’s MVP, becoming the first defensive player to do so since 1971. That season, Taylor recorded a career high 20.5 sacks, 105 total tackles, five passes defensed, and two forced fumbles.

In a 1988 game against the New Orleans Saints, suffering with a torn pectoral muscle in his shoulder, Taylor demonstrated his remarkable strength and determination. Wearing a harness to keep his shoulder in place, he managed to record seven tackles, three sacks, and two forced fumbles. The Giants won 13-12.

Taylor recorded 132.5 quarterback sacks (not including 9.5 sacks he recorded in 1981, since the sack didn’t become an official NFL statistic until 1982), 1,088 tackles, 33 forced fumbles, 10 fumble recoveries, and nine interceptions during his career. He was selected to play in 10 Pro Bowls and in 1994 was named to the NFL’s 75th Anniversary All-Time Team

Barry Sanders One of the game’s most electrifying runners, Barry Sanders rushed for more than 1,000 yards in each of his 10 seasons with the Detroit Lions (1989-1998). He was the first running back ever to do so. The 1988 Heisman Trophy winner was also just the third person to gain more than 2,000 yards in a season, a feat he accomplished in 1997.
Sanders, after forgoing his senior season at Oklahoma State, made his pro debut just three days after signing with the Lions, who had made him their first-round pick and the third overall pick in the 1989 draft. He absolutely dazzled a Pontiac Silverdome crowd when he dashed for an 18-yard gain on his first carry as an NFL running back. But that was just the beginning. His 1,470 yards rushing that season, a-then Lions record, fell just 10 yards short of the league’s best for the year.

In 1990, Sanders, with 1,304 yards rushing, topped all ground gainers, something he would do again in 1994 (1,883 yards) and in 1996 (1,553 yards). His 44 receptions for 283 yards in 1994 gave him a combined 2,166 yards from scrimmage. The most impressive feat of his remarkable career, however, came in 1997, when he rushed for a league-best 2,053 yards and gained another 305 yards on 33 catches for an amazing 2,358 combined yards gained. That year, Sanders, who was named league Most Valuable Player, gained more than 100 yards rushing in an NFL record 14 consecutive regular season games.

Though not big by most standards, Sanders capitalized on his size by running low to the ground making him less of a target for would-be tacklers. His elusiveness and ability to reverse direction seemingly at will, often left defensive players grasping at air. “He makes you miss so bad, you kind of look up in the stands and wonder if anybody’s looking at you,” Atlanta Falcons cornerback D.J. Johnson once remarked. “You’ve got 60,000 people in there and you wonder if anyone saw you miss that tackle.”

A first- or second-team All-Pro ten consecutive seasons, Sanders became the first NFL running back to record five 1,500-yard rushing seasons, in addition to being the only back to do so in four consecutive seasons (1994-1997).

Selected to play in the Pro Bowl each of his 10 NFL seasons, Sanders held nearly every Lions’ rushing record and numerous all-time NFL records, at the time of his retirement

I agree that people should probably take this a little more seriously, but the pick is made, so there's little pointing debating it now. I honestly didn't expect to see a second wideout come off the board before the fifth or sixth round.

In retrospect, I'm sorry the rules of this thing weren't defined better before we started. I figured there would be more teams picking and didn't want to have to pick Neil Lomax (joke) in round two at quarterback. If I could go back, I would have selected Rice with my first rounder.

In retrospect, I'm sorry the rules of this thing weren't defined better before we started. I figured there would be more teams picking and didn't want to have to pick Neil Lomax (joke) in round two at quarterback. If I could go back, I would have selected Rice with my first rounder.

Yes, pick was made and it's over with now, but still a head scratcher when you have every player in the history of the game except for the 33 players already taken.

This is a good mock currently other than that pick, not trying to knock this or anything, just stating that while Rod Smith is great, I wouldn't put him anywhere near the 2nd WR off the board.

On the other hand, ChampBailey24 was born in 1986, making the Rod Smith selection a little more understandable.

DT Bob Lilly, Cowboys.

Born in Throckmorton, Texas, Lilly originally made a name for himself as an All-American football player at TCU and star defensive tackle for the Dallas Cowboys from 1961 to 1974. As the number one draft pick in 1961, Bob went on to be All-Pro 7 times, and played in 11 Pro Bowl games. His name was the first inscribed in the "Ring of Honor" above Texas Stadium. Bob Lilly was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1980. The Sporting News named him a member of the All-Century NFL Team and "the greatest defensive tackle in NFL history".

Well, who's running this thing? Slap, Phisig, Clockwork, Old Dude? We should nominate someone to be in charge of this thing so we can keep it going.

My thought is, who's in this draft that's on the computer for most of the day? Whoever is on the most can hand out decisions faster.

Thoughts?

Also, my apopogies if my pick comes up tomorrow and I'm not around. I won't be able to get to a computer until 10:00 PM CST.

Why don't you take over Icon's team?

Parameters are that we draft 40 rounds, (16 teams in snake format). You can draft any NFL player, present or past, and put together whatever kind of team you think you can construct with 40 players.

There's no real "objective" right or wrong in terms of past & present. It's just "greatness" whatever that means to you. Some guys are going at this from the angle of sheer size, weight, power, accuracy, speed, toughness, etc., (in which case the more modern players tend to predominate) and some are just looking at it in terms of how individuals played against their peers.

You do want to try to put together a viable 40-man squad, though ...

I'll take Icon's team....what is the time each person has between picks?

Right now, it seems to be however long it takes. There's no big rush, and I don't think there's an official time limit, but people get annoyed if someone doesn't act in a reasonably timely fashion. Seems to me that we ought to be able to average at least a half a dozen picks a day, so that everyone should be looking at getting in a pick at least every 24 hours or so.

To expand on that, I would say, at a minimum, you have to cover the 11 starters on offense and defense, plus a punter and kicker.

http://www.profootballhof.com/assets/hof/mug1172.jpg

Led Washington to NFL titles in 1937 (his rookie year) and '42. (Made championship game 3 additional years, including a 14-15 loss to the Rams in which he played with separated ribs.) Led NFL in passing 6 times, Led in punting 4 times, and, in 1943, as a DB, he led the league in INTs. In 1943, he led in all 3 categories. This is the only time a single player has led the league in an offensive, defensive and special teams category. His punting average of 51.4 yards (in 1940), his career average of 45.1 yards per punt, and his passing completion percentage mark (70.3 in 1945) are still records. The passing percentage record is particularly impressive since he was never a “dink and dunk” guy. For example, on Halloween in 1948, Baugh set a new NFL record with 446 yards passing against the Boston Yanks at Griffith Stadium in Washington. Incredibly, he did it throwing only 24 passes, for an average of 18.6 yards per pass. (And, by comparison, Joe Montana’s highest single-season completion rate was 70.2 percent.)

Baugh’s career marks show 1695 completions on 2995 attempts. He threw for 21,886 yards and 187 touchdowns. He rushed for 9 touchdowns. These stats are also very impressive when you consider the rules of the day, the shorter schedules, and that fact that Baugh did not switch to a being a conventional T-formation QB until 1944. Up to that time, he was employed as a single wing tailback. It should also be noted that the NFL, at the time, had no specific regulation about footballs. Cleveland, in particular, used to over-inflate the pigskin when they played Baugh, just to make it more difficult to throw. (I can’t think of a bigger testament to a player’s greatness than when his opponents had to cheat on the equipment, just to slow him down.)

Baugh lasted 16 seasons, which was quite a feat, since back in the 40’s, there was no such penalty as “roughing the quarterback.”

Performances of note: On “Sammy Baugh Day” in 1947, he passed for 355 yards and 6 touchdowns against the Chicago Cardinals, that season’s eventual champions. This was not the first time he’d thrown 6 TDs in a single game. He also did it on Halloween, 1943. (Apparently, he liked that holiday.)

Side note: After college, he joined the St. Louis Cardinals as a third baseman, and only switched to football after being sent to the minors.

Famous quote: After a coach exhorted him at practice to try to throw the ball directly at his receiver’s eye, Baugh asked, “Which one?”

At 91, Baugh is the last living charter member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Additionally he has been honored by the Redskins with the retirement of #33, the only jersey they have ever retired..

BTW, everyone has their own subjective way of looking at this and their own standards of performance.

Some folks may think I'm on drugs with some of these picks.

There's absolutely no doubt that modern players are faster, bigger and stronger than the vast majority of their prehistoric counterparts.

Just for the record, the way I think I'm personally going to go about it is to take the average of the season in which each of my starting 24 (11 offense, 11 defense, P & K) entered the NFL in order to figure out what "era" the team would fall into.

So far, I have

Jim Brown: 1957
Anthony Munoz: 1980
Bob Lilly: 1961
Sammy Baugh: 1937

Average starting year: 1957 (Detroit won the title with Bobby Layne as the QB, their last NFL title)

But that's just me, YMMV. :)

Don Hutson, WR, Packers.

Another history lesson for the young'uns:

(Compiled from a variety of sources)

Before there was Jerry Rice, before there was Steve Largent, before there were even pass patterns, there was Don Hutson.

"Hutson Does It Again!"

"Don Paces Packers to World Title!"

"Amazing Hutson Can't Be Stopped!"

Headlines of this nature were commonplace during the 11-year reign of Don Hutson with the Green Bay Packers from 1935 through 1945. They tell, in a few short sentences, why "the Alabama Antelope" is still considered by many as the greatest pass receiver who ever lived.

Without question, Hutson is the "yardstick" player of the pass-receiving profession. He caught a touchdown "bomb" on his very first play as a rookie and finished his career with 99 touchdown receptions, a record that stood for more than four decades. When he retired after the 1945 season, Hutson had caught 488 passes, more than two and a half times the number of his closest rival. His career TD receptions were an astounding 62 ahead of the next guy in line.

Hutson invented modern pass receiving. He created Z-outs, buttonhooks, hook-and-gos, and a whole catalog of moves and fakes that have defined the position for decades.

He could outmaneuver and outrace virtually every defender in the league. Hutson led the league in receptions eight times, including five consecutive seasons (1936-37, 1939, 1941-45). He led the league in receiving yards seven times, including four consecutive seasons (1936, 1938-39, 1941-44). He led the league in touchdown receptions nine times, including five consecutive seasons (1935-38, 1940-44). He led the league in touchdowns of any type eight times. (By comparison, no player since then, not even Jim Brown or Emmitt Smith, has led more than three times.) All of these achievements remain NFL records. Twice, in 1941 and 1942, he was named the league’s MVP.

Hutson played in an era of 10- to 12-game seasons, so his records might have stood forever if he had the 16-game opportunities enjoyed today. Twenty percent of all his receptions were touchdowns. He scored a total of 105 touchdowns in just 117 games.

By any interpretation, his marks, when compared with his contemporaries, clearly demonstrate that he was a man ahead of his time. Along with Sammy Baugh, Don Hutson was a dominant factor in the offensive evolution of pro football. When Hutson and Baugh first entered the NFL, pro football was a run-oriented game with the forward pass being used only in desperation or as a surprise play. By the time the two retired, the forward pass had become a major part of every NFL’s team offense.

Like everyone in the days before free substitution, Hutson was a 60-minute player who spent most of his career as a very fine safety on defense. In his final six seasons, he swiped 30 opposing quarterbacks’ passes. He also acted as a placekicker, who hit 172 extra points in his career. In one quarter of a 1945 game, he caught four touchdown passes and kicked five PATs for a total of 29 points. Hutson remained the Packers' all-time leader in scoring with 823 points until Ryan Longwell finally surpassed him in 2003.

In 1951, Hutson's uniform number 14 became the first to be officially retired by the Packers.

Charter member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1963.

In 1970, Hutson was named to the NFL's All-50 Year Team.

In 1994, he was named to the NFL's All-Time Two-Way team and the 75th Anniversary team.

Among ESPNs top 100 American athletes of the 20th century, Hutson was also named by Sporting News as the 6th greatest NFL player of all time.

Great pick.

At left tackle [Parker] earned All-Pro honors four straight times from 1958 to 1961.

In the middle of the 1962 season he was moved to left guard and at year’s end was named All-Pro at both tackle and guard. He then followed up with three straight seasons of earning All-Pro accolades at guard (1963 to 1965). During this period Parker played in eight consecutive Pro Bowls.

All righty, let's keep this thing going. Elway4Life needs a DB, LB, or OL. Here are some choices:

OL Forrest Gregg
LB Sam Huff
S Dennis Smith

Who shall we select for his team? If anyone else has a brighter idea, please feel free to chime in.
Its going to get really old if we have to keep prodding people to make their picks for another 35 rounds.

Give him Huff.

Those Cheap Bastards select two Green Bay Packers:

Willie Davis, DE
Forrest Gregg, OT

Willie Davis
Vince Lombardi, quickly assured Davis that Green Bay needed a top-flight defensive end and he thought Willie was the man. "I consider speed, agility and size to be the three most important attributes in a successful lineman," Lombardi told Davis. "Give me a man who has any two of those dimensions and he'll do okay. But give him all three and he'll be great. We think you have all three."

Davis also possessed the intangibles – dedication, intelligence, leadership – that enabled him to rise a cut above almost everyone else. He was also as durable as he was dedicated, never missing even one of a possible 162 games in his 12-year tenure.

Davis, a hard-hitting, big play defender, frequently dropped opposing ball carriers or quarterbacks for losses and or caused them to lose possession of the football. Always on the prowl, he recovered 21 opponents' fumbles during his career, just one shy of the record when he retired.

Davis’ outstanding play did not go unnoticed. He was an All-NFL selection five times in six years from 1962 to 1967 and selected to play in five consecutive Pro Bowls. Undeniably Willie Davis was a major factor in Green Bay’s winning tradition of the 1960s that included five NFL championships and six divisional titles in eight seasons. Included in the historic championship run were impressive victories in the first two Super Bowls.

Forrest Gregg
During the 15 seasons that he played in the National Football League, Forrest Gregg could have been described as one of the best ever to play his position in the history of the game. A native Texan, Forrest starred in college at Southern Methodist and was the Green Bay Packers' No. 2 draft pick in 1956.

Even though, at 6-4 and 249 pounds, he was considered small for the job, he was ticketed from the start for the offensive right tackle position. Realizing that he would never be able to overpower the monstrous defensive left ends that would be pouring in on him,

Forrest went right to work learning how to finesse them. He spent countless hours watching coaches’ films of the most noted stars. It wasn't long before he knew the moves of every opponent and had perfected ways to combat them.

Forrest earned an "iron-man" tag by playing in a then league record 188 consecutive games from 1956 until 1971, his final season which he spent with the Super Bowl bound Dallas Cowboys. As the Packers grew in stature in the 1960s, so too did Gregg. He won All-NFL acclaim eight straight years from 1960 through 1967 and was selected to play in nine Pro Bowls.

In 1961 and again in 1965, when injuries created a crisis on the Packers’ offensive line, Gregg willingly switched to guard to fill the void. In 1965, one major wire service named him an All-NFL at guard, the other picked him as its all-league tackle. A most fitting tribute came from the late Vince Lombardi who was blessed with many great stars during the dynasty years in Green Bay. But Vince, in his book, "Run to Daylight," stated simply: "Forrest Gregg is the finest player I ever coached!"

Darrell Green CB, Washington Redskins, 1983-2000

http://espn-i.starwave.com/media/nfl/2000/1001/photo/a_green_i.jpg

At 5’9” and 184 pounds Darrell Green played 20 season for the Burgundy and Gold. He won many awards on and off the field. Green went to 7 Pro Bowls (1984, 86, 87, 90, 91, 96, & 97) and played in 3 Superbowls winning 2 of them against the Denver Broncos in 1988 and the Buffalo Bills in 1992. Green finished his career with 54 interceptions, 6 of which were for touchdowns. He was also voted the NFL’s Fastest Man 4 times. In a 2002 game against the Indianapolis Colts, Darrell Green was honored during halftime, as a member of the Washington Redskins 70 Greatest Players in the franchise’s 70 years. The honorees posed for a picture in the south end zone wearing their commemorative jackets. Moments after the picture was taken, while other decorated former players headed into the tunnel and to find their seats in the stands, Green, 42, took of his jacket, handed it to a friend, put on his helmet and stepped onto the field to take his place on the kickoff team. 2002 marked the end of Darrell Green’s illustrious career, he retired shortly after the season ended, forever # 28.

Screw it.

With the 85th pick, Elway 4 Life gets Herb Adderley, CB, Packers/Cowboys (1961-1972)

Adderley holds the Packers records for interceptions returned for touchdowns in career (7, record tied with Darren Sharper), and interceptions returned for touchdowns in 1 year (3, in 1965).

He was a star for the Packers from (1961-1969), then played three seasons (1970-1972) with the Dallas Cowboys. While with the Packers, won 2 Super Bowl rings in Super Bowl I and Super Bowl II. Adderley was a major factor in the Packers Super Bowl II win, intercepting a pass in the fourth quarter and returning it 60 yards for a touchdown to put the game away. After joining the Cowboys, Adderley became a vital cog in Dallas' "Doomsday Defense", assisting them to a Super Bowl appearance in Super Bowl V and a championship win in Super Bowl VI.

In his 12 NFL seasons, Adderley recorded 48 interceptions, which he returned for 1,046 yards and 7 touchdowns, an average of 21.8 yards per return. He also recovered 14 fumbles(returning them for 65 yards) and returned 120 kickoffs for 3,080 yards and 2 touchdowns.

He was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1980.

With the 88th pick, I'll take Gino Marchetti, DE, Texans/Colts 1952-1966.

He was to the defensive end position what Sammy Baugh was to quarterback, Don Hutson to wide receiver and Lawrence Taylor to outside linebacker. He was the prototype, the standard by which future generations of defensive ends would be judged.

Marchetti combined size (6-4, 244), agility and amazing big-man quickness in his 13-year role as the Baltimore Colts chief run-stuffer and pass rusher. He became the first defensive end specialist in the early 1950s, when coaches were phasing out two-way players. And he introduced the concept of an end pressuring the quarterback -- a function he performed with an almost demonic fervor.

Marchetti was big and fast enough to overpower anybody who blocked his path to the quarterback. His relentless charges were executed with a wild passion that spread fear throughout the league, and his explosiveness off the snap confounded double- and triple-team blocking tactics. Trying to block Marchetti was like trying to stop a steamroller moving at warp speed. He simply overwhelmed some of the best tackles in the game.

Marchettis menacing aura was enhanced by the dark-bearded jaws and piercing eyes that flashed at offensive linemen from inside his helmet. And his legend grew with stories of how he had played half of one game with a separated shoulder and another game two weeks after undergoing surgery for appendicitis.

At 18, Marchetti fought in the Battle of the Bulge. After the war, he attended the University of San Francisco, helped the Colts capture two NFL championships, played in 10 Pro Bowls and earned All-Pro honors every year from 1956 to '62.
