Info on my picks:
Thomas Wade Landry. . .Noted for impassive, sideline demeanor. . . Perfected flex defense, multiple offense, revived shotgun (spread) offense. . .29-year tenure with one team tied NFL record. . .Career record: 270-178-6. . .270 wins third most ever. . .Had 20 straight winning seasons, five NFC titles, two Super Bowl wins. . . Defensive back, punter with Yankees (AAFC), Giants (NFL), 1949-1955. . .Born September 11, 1924, in Mission, Texas . . .Died February 12, 2000, at age of 75.
Tom Landry was selected as the head coach when the Dallas Cowboys started their first National Football League season in 1960. He remained in that capacity for 29 seasons until new ownership opted for new field leadership after the 1988 campaign.
At the time of his retirement, only George Halas, who coached the Chicago Bears for 40 years, surpassed his 29-year tenure with one club. It took Landry a few years to develop his young club into contender status but, once he did, the Cowboys enjoyed exceptional success for more than two decades.
The Cowboys under Landry had their first winning season and their first NFL Eastern Conference championship in 1966. They didn't fall below .500 again until 1986. During that period, Landry's teams had 20 straight winning seasons, 13 divisional championship, five NFC titles and victories in Super Bowls VI and XII. The Cowboys also played in Super Bowls V, IX and XIII.
His regular season career record is 250-162-6 and his record counting playoffs is 270-178-6. Only Halas and Don Shula top his 270 career wins. Landry gained a reputation as a great technical innovator, as well as an inspirational leader. He introduced the "flex defense" and "multiple offense" in the 1960s. In the 1970s, he restructured the "shotgun" or "spread" offense and, in the 1980s, he embraced and helped develop the "situation substitution" concept of handling his player talent.
Landry was an excellent player in the pros. He was a defensive back, punter and kick returner with the 1949 New York Yankees in the All-America Football Conference and with the New York Giants in the NFL between 1950 and 1955. He recorded 32 career interceptions and had a 40.9-yard punting average. He served the Giants as a player-coach in 1954 and 1955 before becoming a full-time defensive coach from 1956 to 1959.

Morten Andersen -- 2nd in career points with 2,358
2nd longest field goal in history -- 60 yards
The most FG 50 yards or more -- 40
A very consistent kicker who not only had longevity (22 years in the league,) but also had the ability to kick the long ball. It was a dead heat between he and Gary Anderson, but I chose Morten because of the distance advantage.

Part of me says that this guy is a reach here and I could take other guys who may go off the board first, but this guy will really be a key to making my defense flexible and dynamic. And I don't want Old Dude or Big Guy to nab him!
And for their 2nd selection in the 26th round Those Cheap Bastards select:
Bill Willis, NG/DT/DE/LB/SS, Browns, 1946-53
William Karnet Willis. . .All-America tackle at Ohio State. . . Played two ways, but excelled as defensive middle guard. . . Lightning quickness his constant trademark that earned him job in first pro scrimmage. . . Touchdown-saving tackle against Giants preserved Browns' 1950 NFL title drive. . .All-AAFC three years. . .All-NFL, 1950-1953. . .In three NFL Pro Bowls. . .Born October 5, 1921, in Columbus, Ohio.
Bill Willis, at 6-2 and 210 pounds, was small by pro football standards in 1946, yet he performed in a class by himself, particularly on defense. In the eight years he played for the Cleveland Browns from 1946 through 1953, he was a first-team All-League selection seven times and a second-team choice once. He also played in three NFL Pro Bowls.
Bill, an African American, came to his first pro training camp as a comparatively small man seeking a job in a big man's sport that had, for about 15 years, been a whites only game. Lined up as the middle man on a five-man defensive front, Bill overwhelmed the center four straight times, each time crashing into quarterback Otto Graham.
Bill's charge was so quick that the coaches felt he had to be offside. But head coach Paul Brown, who had coached Bill at Ohio State, made a personal check and found that his recruit hadn't been offside at all, just exceptionally fast and agile in his defensive charge. That very night, Brown signed Willis to his first pro contract, helping to permanently break pro football’s “color barrier” a full year in advance of Jackie Robinson doing the same in major league baseball with the Brooklyn Dodgers.
Bill played both offense and defense for the Browns but it was at the middle guard position that he earned lasting admiration and acclaim. Lightning quickness was his constant trademark but opponents remember he was a solid blocker and devastating tackler as well. It was Bill’s touchdown-saving tackle in a playoff game against the New York Giants that enabled the Browns to continue their quest for the 1950 championship their first year in the NFL after four dominating seasons in the All-America Football Conference.
He's going to be the Mecklenburg of my defense. He can get penetration on the D-line with his quickness, can cover backs if played at LB, and has the size and speed to play safety in a pinch. The renaissance man of my defense, Bill Willis.

I haven't come across any, either. But he was constantly mentioned in the research I came across involving his teammates Marion Motely and Len Ford.
Only thing to add is that in the first official "pro bowl" game, he also started as a right guard on offense. So that stuff about being a two-way player was not an exaggeration.

Just a question, are players who were just drafted last weekend eligible?
Hmmmm....
I don't think so. This is an all time NFL draft. I think they would have had to take at least one snap in the NFl to qualify.
What does anyone else think?

The KnockYerDickintheDirts select "Bullet" Bob Hayes WR 1965-1975 Dallas, SF.
Billed as "The World's Fastest Human", Hayes won two Gold Medals at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. Tying a world record in the 100 meters, he also anchored the US team in the 4X100 relay, turning a three meter deficit into a three meter victory and a new world record. In 1972, Hayes won a Super Bowl Ring to go along with his Olympic Gold Medals. More than 30 years later, no other athlete has accomplished that feat.
During the 60s, the Cowboys were way ahead of everybody when it came to the NFL draft. When they selected the raw sprinter from Florida A&M in the seventh round of the 1965 draft, nobody could imagine the impact he would have upon the game. He burst upon the scene with 45 TD receptions in his first four seasons. Hayes' world class speed literally changed the way teams played pass defense. His field stretching capabilities were the catalyst behind the development of zone defenses in the NFL.

I would be happy to join the Alltime Draft! I have seen all the picks taken up to this point(I think),so if it is cool I would like to take QB Troy Aikman with my first pick. How often do we choose players?
Okay. You will take over Phibacka's team.
Our general drafting order is like this:
Arkie
BMF Bronco
Phisig
Eddie Mac
Big Guy
-Slap-
Clockwork Orange
Phibacka (now Rshackleford)
Old Dude
Killericon
Ray Finkle
Bronco LB 52
Youcandoit
Dipsomaniac
Mr. Trout
JCMElway
and then, during even-numbered rounds, we repeat the sequence from bottom-up. So it is a "snake" format.
Right now, we are in the 26th round and working our way back up. Big Guy is on the clock. Eddie Mac is on deck. After him is Phisig.
When a person goes on the clock, he has 12 hours to make his pick. Once he makes it, the next in line immediately goes on the clock.
Anyone who fails to make their pick in the time allowed may make that pick up, at any time. However, missing two picks in a row is grounds for disqualification. (People near the end of the snake are allowed to miss three picks, because they have more or less back to back picks)
Your pick of Troy Aikman is valid.
You can make one more "make-up" pick at any time, even though Big Guy is currently on the clock. First come first serve.

Ok then,
The Old Farts fill their hole at Fullback with Joe Perry
Class of 1969
Fullback >>> 6-0, 200
(Compton Junior College)
1948-1960, 1963 San Francisco 49ers (AAFC/NFL), 1961-1962 Baltimore Colts
Fletcher Joseph Perry. . .Didn't play college football. . . Spotted playing service football by pro scouts. . .Signed as free agent by 49ers. . . Extremely quick runner who earned nickname "The Jet". . . First to gain over 1,000 yards two straight years, 1953-1954. . .Career record: 12,532 combined net yards, 9,723 yards rushing, 260 receptions, 513 points. . . Played in three Pro Bowls. . .Born January 22, 1927, in Stevens, Arkansas.
Joe Perry put Compton Junior College on the football map when he scored 22 touchdowns in one season. However, before he completed his college football career, he was called into military service. He was playing football for the Alameda, California Naval Training Station team when spotted by a player from the San Francisco 49ers of the new All-America Football Conference. The player reported his find to the 49ers’ hierarchy who offered Joe a contract. Upon his discharge from the military in 1948, Perry accepted their proposal.
Although he had great speed, Perry was basically a straight-ahead runner when he turned pro. But as in everything he did on a football field, Joe quickly adjusted and promptly emerged as one of the premiere runners in the young league. His superior speed earned him the nickname “The Jet” during his second season.
In 1950, the 49ers and their star running back joined the National Football League. Perry, at 6-0 and 200 pounds was small for an NFL fullback. Unlike the typical fullback of the day, his forte was not as an inside power runner. Instead, he combined his power with his quickness and deceptive elusiveness to slash through opposing defenses.
It was an awesomely effective style, as he became the first player in NFL history to rush for 1,000 yards in consecutive seasons, a feat he accomplished in 1953 and 1954. A veteran of three Pro Bowls, Perry was All-AAFC in 1949 and All-NFL in 1953 and 1954.
"The Jet" played 13 seasons with the 49ers before being traded to the Baltimore Colts in 1961. After two seasons with the Colts he returned to San Francisco for one final season. In 16 seasons of outstanding play, Joe Perry amassed a total of 9,723 rushing yards and averaged an amazing 4.9 yards per carry.

The Fighting Irish select QB/K George Blanda, 1949 Chicago Bears, 1950 Baltimore Colts, 1950-1958 Chicago Bears, 1960-1966 Houston Oilers, 1967-1975 Oakland Raiders
George Frederick Blanda. . .Famous for last-minute heroics in five straight 1970 games. . .Scored then-record 2,002 points. . .Held or tied for 21 title game, 16 regular-season marks. . .Passed for 7 TDs one game, 36 in season, 1961. . . 1961 AFL, 1970 AFC Player of the Year. . .Career passing totals: 4,007 attempts, 26,920 yards, 236 TDs. . . 26-season, 340-game career longest ever. . .Played until age 48. . . Born September 17, 1927, in Youngwood, Pennsylvania.
George Blanda played pro football for 26 seasons – longer than any other person. However, he’ll probably be remembered best for his 1970 season with the Oakland Raiders. That year, in a five-game period, George provided Oakland with four wins and one tie with last-second touchdown passes or field goals – at age 43.
The string started with a three-touchdown passing and one field goal outburst against Pittsburgh and continued with a 48-yard field goal with three seconds left to tie Kansas City. He threw a scoring pass and added a 52-yard field goal in the last 96 seconds to defeat Cleveland. Next came a winning touchdown toss against Denver and a last-instant field goal to upend San Diego.
During his career, Blanda accumulated impressive credentials. He passed for 236 touchdowns and scored an incredible 2,002 points. In 1970, he became the oldest quarterback to play in a title game. Although the Baltimore Colts won 27-17, Blanda accounted for all of the Raiders' points off two touchdown passes and one field goal. Blanda’s career was divided into three distinct parts, 10 years with the Chicago Bears followed by seven seasons with the Houston Oilers and nine-years with the Oakland Raiders. He was just a month shy of his 49th birthday when he retired before the 1976 season.
Blanda did not become a fulltime starter until his fifth season with the Bears and in 1954 he was shelved by an injury. In 1959, he balked at becoming a kicker-only and retired. But the emergence of the American Football League in 1960 gave Blanda another chance to play. He went on to lead the Oilers to the first two AFL titles and won AFL Player of the Year honors in 1961. In 1967, when Blanda was almost 40, the Oilers decided he was through but the Raiders saw George as a contributing backup passer and a dependable kicker so they picked him up. George handled both jobs with distinction for another nine seasons.

The Fighting Irish select George Connor, OT/DT/LB Chicago Bears 1948-55
George Leo Connor. . .All-America at both Holy Cross, Notre Dame. . .New York Giants' No. 1 draft pick, 1946. . .Rights traded to Boston Yanks and then to Bears. . .All-NFL at three positions - offensive tackle, defensive tackle, linebacker. . . All-NFL five years. . .Two-way performer throughout career. . .First of big, fast, agile linebackers. . . Exceptional at diagnosing enemy plays. . .Played in four Pro Bowl games, 1950-1953. . . Born January 21, 1925, in Chicago, Illinois. . .Died March 31, 2003, at age of 78.
George Connor earned All-America honors three times, once at Holy Cross in 1943 and then at Notre Dame in 1946 and 1947. During his eight-year career (1948-1955) with the Bears, he was named to the All-NFL team at three different positions — offensive tackle, defensive tackle, and linebacker. In 1952 and 1953, he was named all-league on both the offensive and defensive teams by different wire services.
Although George is remembered as one of the finest of the post-World War II tackles, it was as a linebacker that he made his biggest mark in the pro football world. And it was the sheer necessity of a desperate situation for the Chicago Bears that prompted George's switch to a linebacker position.
The Philadelphia Eagles were running roughshod over the NFL in 1949 and one end sweep with two guards and the fullback leading Steve Van Buren around the flank had been particularly successful. The Bears coaching staff hit upon the idea of moving a big, fast, and agile man like the 6-3, 240-pound Connor into a linebacker’s slot to try to stop the play. The move was made, the experiment was successful, the Eagles were beaten and Connor became a linebacker for keeps.
That didn't mean, however, that he was a one-way specialist. He continued to play offensive tackle, winning All-NFL acclaim on both offense and defense. George was always one of the smartest men on the field wherever he played. He seemingly instinctively knew about keys – the tips that the movements of certain offensive players will provide to the alert defender as to which way the play if going – long before keys became the vogue.
Connor always played the game hard and clean and with exceptional effectiveness and he might have continued in a starring role for many years had not a knee injury cut short his career after the 1955 season.

Old Farts keep the second best set of safeties (behind Atwater & Smith) together and selct Jake Scott.
Name: Jake Scott
Position: Safety
Number: 13
Height/Weight: 6-0, 188
College: Georgia
Drafted: 1970 seventh round, by Miami
Hometown: Arlington, VA
Born: 7/20/45
Career: One of the greatest safeties in pro football throughout his career, Scott was selected to the Pro Bowl four of the six years he was with the Dolphins. In his nine-year career (the last three were spent with the Washington Redskins) Scott played in 126 games and recorded 49 interceptions for 551 yards (11.2), and returned 130 punts for 1,357 yards (10.4) and one touchdown. He was named the MVP of Super Bowl VII after tying a Super Bowl record with two interceptions and setting the record for the most return yardage with 63 yards. Scott became the first defensive back to receive the honor and held that distinction until Dallas' Larry Brown was named MVP of Super Bowl XXX, 23 years later. Scott is the Dolphins' all-time career leader with 35 interceptions and 127 punt returns for 1,330 yards (10.4). In addition, Scott ranks among the clubs all-time leaders with eight interceptions in 1974 (second), 425 interception return yards (third), and five interceptions during his rookie season of 1970 (fifth). His career punt return average of 10.5 yards ranks third in Dolphins history and his season average of 12.1 yards (1973) ranks fifth on the team's all-time list.

I think its time to finally add my fullback. The selection is Keith Byars FB Phi/Mia/NE/NYJ 1986-1998.
Byars was a big, versatile athlete who lined up at RB and TE during his long career, but he spent most of his time at FB. He finished his junior year second in the Heisman Trophy voting and was favored to win the award the following year. A broken foot ended his senior year, but it didn't prevent the Eagles from using the 10th pick of the 1986 draft on him.

RShackleford is on the clock until noon CST.
Every time I see the name RShackleford it makes me think of a great quote from Charles Barkley. He was talking about the lack of commitment from the 76ers front office in terms of surrounding him with enough talent to win a championship. He said, "I asked for Shaq and they got me Charles Shackleford."

Time has expired for RShackleford, so I am on the clock.
Here, in the 27th Round, I figure it's time to snag a backup QB, and who better to fit the bill than Hall of Famer Sid Luckman, QB/p/DB, Bears (1939-1950)?
http://www.goallineart.com/Luckman,%20Sid.JPG
Luckman is considered the greatest long-range passer of his time. Following a brilliant career as a halfback at Columbia, Luckman played quarterback and became the "Master of the T-Formation" with George Halas and the Chicago Bears. He led the "Monsters of the Midway" to four championships in a seven-year span.
He led the NFL in yards per attempt in 1939, 1940, 1941, and 1943, and in passing yards in 1943, 1946, and 1947. He was named All-NFL five times (1940-44, 1947) and was league MVP in 1943. But the statistics and accolades do not do justice to his greatness and importance in bringing football into the modern age. His understanding and grasp of the complex T-formation was unparalleled.
As a side note, Luckman also acted as a punter and defensive back (with 17 career INTs) for the Bears and here, on my team, he will act as the backup punter for Sammy Baugh and as an “emergency” DB.
In 1965, Luckman was honored by being only the second quarterback inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He is also a member of the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame, and in 1988, he received the Walter Camp Distinguished American of the Year Award.
Also #39 on TSN's top 100 NFL players of the 20th century, and, along with Sammy Baugh and Bob Waterfield, named to the NFL's all-time squad for the 1940's.

2002: Anderson kicks a field goal held by Mitch Berger
For the 1995 season, Anderson signed as a free agent with the Philadelphia Eagles. Anderson spent the 1997 season as a member of the San Francisco 49ers. Then, in 1998, Anderson signed with the Minnesota Vikings and converted all 35 of his attempted field goals and all 59 extra points in regular season play. However after making all of his field goal and points after touchdowns during the entire season, he missed a crucial kick in the 4th quarter against the Atlanta Falcons in the NFC Championship Game.
Anderson stayed with the Vikings until the 2003 season, when he joined the Tennessee Titans out of retirement as a replacement for the injured Joe Nedney after the first game of the season. After that season, Anderson again retired and turned down offers from several teams to come kick for them. When Nedney went down with another season-ending injury after the start of the 2004 season, Anderson again agreed to unretire for the Titans.
Anderson currently resides in Canmore, Alberta, Canada and operates a fly fishing charter business called Perfect Season.

With their 27th pick Those Cheap Bastards select:
JOHN HENRY JOHNSON, FB, 49ers
Class of 1987
Fullback >>> 6-2, 210
St. Mary's, Arizona State
1954-1956 San Francisco 49ers, 1957-1959 Detroit Lions, 1960-1965 Pittsburgh Steelers, 1966 Houston Oilers
John Henry Johnson. . .Steelers' No. 2 draft pick, 1953. . . Joined 49ers in 1954 after year in Canada. . .Completed "Million Dollar Backfield" with McElhenny, Perry, Tittle in San Francisco. . .Powerful runner, superior blocker. . .Had best years in Pittsburgh, surpassing 1,000 yards rushing in 1962, 1964. . .Career stats: 6,803 yards, 48 touchdowns rushing; 186 receptions for 1,478 yards, 7 TDs. . .Born November 24, 1929, in Waterproof, Louisiana.
John Henry Johnson, a 6-2, 210-pound workhorse running back, spent 12 years in the National Football League with the San Francisco 49ers, Detroit Lions and Pittsburgh Steelers and a 13th season in the American Football League with the Houston Oilers.
When he retired after the 1966 season, his 6,803 career rushing yards ranked him behind only Jim Brown, Jim Taylor, and Joe Perry as the top ground gainers of all time. Johnson also was an excellent pass receiver with 186 receptions for 1,478 yards. He scored 330 points on 55 touchdowns in his career.
A standout collegian at St. Mary's until that school discontinued football and then at Arizona State, John Henry was a 1953 second-round draft pick of the Steelers. He first opted to play in Canada but after one season at Calgary, he returned to the United States to start his NFL career with the 49ers. He was an immediate sensation, finishing second in the league in rushing with 681 yards and a 5.3-yard average.
For the next two years, he was an integral part of the "Million Dollar Backfield” that included future Hall of Famers Hugh McElhenny, Y. A. Tittle, and Perry. Johnson was traded to Detroit in 1957 and then to Pittsburgh in 1960.
It was with the Steelers that John Henry enjoyed his finest seasons. In both 1962 and 1964, he broke the 1,000-yard rushing barrier, the first Steeler to achieve that lofty level. It was with the Lions, however, that he participated in his only NFL title game, the 1957 contest that saw Detroit overwhelm the Cleveland Browns, 59-14. Johnson was a key figure in the Lions’ title drive that year and wound up as the club's leading rusher with 621 yards. Johnson was selected to play in the 1955, 1963, 1964, and 1965 Pro Bowl Games.

... with the 28th pick Those Cheap Bastards select:
HUGH MCELHENNY, RB, 49ers
http://www.billdaniels.com/hughmcelhennygla.jpg
Halfback >>> 6-1, 195
(Washington)
1952-1960 San Francisco 49ers, 1961-1962 Minnesota Vikings, 1963 New York Giants, 1964 Detroit Lions
Hugh Edward McElhenny, Jr. . .Washington All-America. . . 49ers' No. 1 draft pick, 1952. . Scored 40-yard TD on first pro play. . . Had phenomenal first season, winning All-NFL, Rookie of Year honors. . . Played in six Pro Bowls. . .MVP of 1958 Pro Bowl. . . Gained 11,375 combined net yards in 13 years. . .Record includes 5,281 yards rushing, 264 pass receptions, 360 points. . . Nicknamed "The King". . . Born December 31, 1928, in Los Angeles, California.
Hugh McElhenny was to pro football in the 1950s and early 1960s what Elvis Presley was to rock and roll. Known as “The King” (McElhenny that is), he had it all. He was an artist whose electrifying moves left opponents and observers spellbound.
McElhenny, a University of Washington All-America halfback, began his football career by rewriting the Pacific Coast Conference’s record book. A first-round draft choice of the San Francisco 49ers in 1952, Hugh made an immediate impression as a rookie leaving sportswriters groping for new superlatives to describe his exciting style of play. He recorded the season’s longest run from scrimmage (89 yards), the longest punt return (94 yards), and the top rushing average (7.0 yards per carry). Not surprisingly, he was a unanimous choice for the league’s Rookie of the Year honors.
Considered the greatest “thrill runner” of his day, McElhenny ran with a tremendously long stride and high knee action. His breakaway speed and unique ability to change direction at will left defenders dazed and confused.
In 1961, after nine seasons and five Pro Bowl appearances, McElhenny joined the expansion Minnesota Vikings. It was, all things considered, his finest season. With the Vikings he accounted for 1,069 combined yards and made his sixth trip to the Pro Bowl.
Two years later, as a member of the New York Giants, McElhenny realized a dream that had escaped him – playing on a championship team. Although Hugh’s knees were already shot, Giants coach Allie Sherman knew he would give the team “his very best,” something he did automatically his entire 13-year career.
When he retired after the 1964 season, McElhenny was one of only three players to have gained more than 11,000 all-purpose yards. Altogether, on rushing, receiving, kickoff returns, punt returns, and fumble returns, he totaled 11,375 yards — or more than six miles.

Tony Canadeo, RB, Packers 1941-1952
Anthony Robert Canadeo "The Gray Ghost of Gonzaga" (born May 5, 1919, in Chicago, Illinois, USA; died November 29, 2003 at age of 84) was a professional football halfback and quarterback for the Green Bay Packers. He played college football at Gonzaga University and was selected by the Packers in the ninth round of the 1941 NFL Draft. He joined the army in 1945, but returned in 1946 and became Green Bay's main runner. He is one of only five Green Bay Packers to have his number retired (Reggie White, Bart Star, Ray Nitschke, Don Hutson). He was the first Packer to ever rush for 1000 yards in a season and the third player in the NFL to accomplish this feat.

Killericon hid his next pick back in post #1383.
Orban "Spec" Sanders.
Sanders played at tailback and as a defensive back for the NY Yanks of the AAFC from 1946-1949, and again in 1950 when the Yanks entered the NFL.
Here's a great article on him:
http://www.footballresearch.com/articles/frpage.cfm?topic=specsand
Killericon intends to use him primarily as a Defensive Back, which is quite understandable, since Sanders plucked 13 INTs for the Yanks in 1950, in a season that was only 12 games long.

For my 28th pick, I will take "The Big Cat."
"He was so big ...
http://www.sportsecyclopedia.com/nfl/sandiego/LaddSD.jpg
... he blocked out the sun."
Ernie Ladd, DT, Chargers, Oilers, Chiefs (1961-1968)
"It was dark," Boston center Jon Morris said when asked what it was like to see Ladd opposite him. "I couldn't see the linebackers. I couldn't see the goalposts. It was like being locked in a closet."
Ladd encased his forearms in rolls of tape, then used his arms like a scythe to cut down offensive linemen. "He comes out there," Morris said, "and you can't get your eyes off his arms. He has those long arms and all over them he has these pads and bandages. He keeps hitting you with the right forearm over and over again."
Said All-AFL center Jim Otto, "Ladd was ... a presence."
Ladd was an American Football League All-Star from 1962 through 1965.
At 6'9" and 315 pounds, he was arguably the biggest and strongest man in professional football during his era: 52-inch chest, 39-inch waist, 20-inch biceps, 19-inch neck, 20-inch calf, and size 18D shoes. Ernie Ladd played in three AFL championship games, helping the Chargers win the American Football League title in 1963.
Ladd spent the 1966 season playing for the Houston Oilers before moving, in 1967, to the Kansas City Chiefs. There, with Buck Buchanan, a former Grambling teammate, he filled out what was probably the biggest defensive tackle tandem in history, and won another AFL title.
Ladd also had a colorful career in wrestling, but this is all I have to say about that:

oooooookayyyy.
I don't any reason why people can't spend roster spots on assistant coaches if they want.
I was thinking of hiring an O-coordinator if I couldn't get the Coach that was an innovator on both offense and defense. Fortunately Landry pioneered offensive and defensive changes, so I'm comfortable there.
I wanted Paul Brown to be my guy, but we've talked about that before....>:'(

Time to complete my starting lineup. The selection is
Ed White G Min/SD 1969-1985.
http://www.chargertom.com/White.jpg
White made four Pro Bowls in his career, but probably missed out on a few others. He was simply surrounded by so much talent in Minnesota and San Diego that he was often overlooked. The guys who lined up against him knew all about him, though.
He was an arm wrestling champion, a competitor in NFL Strongest Man events and his prodigious appetite for food was legendary. Hardnosed and durable, White held the NFL record for games played by an offensive lineman at 241 when he retired.

Every team needs a "character"
Old Farts add to their defensive line with Fred Dryer
Former College Football standout at San Diego State University where he played Defensive End. Was a first round Draft Pick of the New York Giants in 1969 where he played for 3 seasons before finishing his 13 year career with the Los Angeles Rams.
John Frederick Dryer was born in Hawthorne, California, on July 6, 1946, son of Charles F. Dryer and Genevieve Nell Clark. Raised in Lawndale, California, he attended Lawndale High School and El Camino College. Before acting, he played football for 14 years.
In college, Dryer played for the Aztecs of San Diego State University, under Head Coach Don Coryell, for the seasons 1967-1968. The 6' 6", 225-pound defensive end # 77 was named First Team All-American in 1968 and played in the College All-Star Game, East-West Shrine Game and Hula Bowl in 1969. A two-year letterman and starter, Dryer received the Chase Memorial Trophy as the school's top defensive lineman in 1968. On September 15, 1967, he was among those players who first stepped onto the brand-new San Diego Stadium (Qualcomm Stadium), when the Aztecs defeated Tennessee State 16-8 in front of 45,822 fans.
In 1988, Fred was inducted into the Aztec Hall of Fame. On May 28, 1997, he was named to the College Foo tball Hall of Fame. He was considered among the most dominant pass rushers in college football history. The induction ceremony happened on August 16, in South Bend, Indiana. On November 8, he returned to San Diego to be honored during night's Homecoming game against the Spartans of San Jose State University.
Dryer started his professional career on the football field in 1969, when he was drafted by the New York Giants in the first round (the 13th pick overall). But as he didn't like New York very much, he left the Giants and returned to California to play for the Los Angeles Rams, which he did from 1972 to 1981, when he retired.
On October 21, 1973, the defensive end # 89 set an NFL record by registering 2 safeties in a single game, against Green Bay Packers.
With the Rams, Fred made the Pro Bowl in 1970 and 1975 and played in Super Bowl XIV in 1980, when the L.A. team was defeated by the Pittsburgh Steelers. Dryer was considered a maverick due to his playing s tyle - and was one in his own life. He loved birds because he heard a song of freedom in the sound of flapping wings. For three years, while playing for the New York Giants, he lived in a Volkswagen van.
And he was a joker - on and off the football field. During the drills (and games), Fred played the role of stand-up comic. One of his talents was to do Tommy Prothro's voice, his head coach in 1972

William Henderson, FB, Green Bay Packers
In 2004, following nine seasons of relative anonymity, became only the ninth Packers player since 1969 to be named both first-team Associated Press All-Pro and a Pro Bowl starter
Stands 12th on the franchise’s all-time list with 158 career regular-season games played; this year will have an opportunity to climb as high as sixth by Green Bay’s 10th game
Eleventh on the Packers’ all-time receptions list with 278 (for 2,083 yards); in franchise history, only current teammate Ahman Green (282) has more catches among backs

One of his talents was to do Tommy Prothro's voice, his head coach in 1972
The Rams defense in the mid 70s had Jack Youngblood at about 240 on the strongside and Fred Dryer at about 230 on the weakside. They were one of the best defenses in history.

.... i also kinda thing the old guys would get smashed by the new guys. just so much bigger, ...
I think that nutrition and health care for kids have generally improved over the past 75 years, and people in the U.S. tend to be a little taller with each new generation. Add to that the sheer fact of population growth, and you get a bigger pool in which to find exceptionally talented athletes.
But I think there are also several specific historical factors that caused bumps or valleys in the general quality of talent in the NFL.
First, you've got major events like WWII. There's no question that NFL teams suffered from roster depletion in the war years, especially 1943 thru 1945. Guys who might have played for the NFL were instead in the military service. I think there was a major dip at that time.
Things rebound in 1946-1948, when many of those guys return, and this is also the time when the racist "Gentlemen's Agreement" against African Americans is finally broken (though some owners stubbornly stuck to that clear up to the early 60's). So you have an upsurge in talent at that time, sufficient to not only improve the existing teams, but to stock most of the AAFC.
Then, around 1950, you have another spike in talent. Most of the AAFC folds, and their players are absorbed into the NFL. At about the same time, you have a lot of guys coming into the league after attending college post WWII. Many are 3 or 4 years older than rookies of the past, and presumably a little more mature and disciplined.
In the late 50's, more football players are coming out of college programs that engaged in bona fide developmental programs (weight lifting, for example) and the league is paying enough to attract the occasional track star or wrestler or basketball player.
Three or four years after that TV revenues start becoming a big factor. Once again there's an upsurge in available talent, as the money starts attracting more athletes, and those who are already in the game tend to hang around a little longer to enjoy the financial benefits. What's more is that the rules have made positions in the game a little more specialized and teams actually start devoting parts of their budget to scouting for special talent. Guys who might have been passed over in the past are now given closer looks and can excel at some feature of the game even if they aren't the prototypical model of a well-rounded athlete. That trend continues.
This also coincides with many more African Americans entering the game. What was a novelty in 1950 becomes a fairly common sight by 1960-1965. Thus, the pool of talent expands.
I think things rose at a fairly steady rate up through the late 70s. TV provided more revenue, and players could make more, and the pool of people continued to grow.
Somewhere in there, I am sure there was a steroid spike. I know that people were already messing with it in the 70s, and I think that continued well into the 80s and early 90's.
There are a couple of Broncos I can think of, in particular, who were fairly average players one year - - backups on the bubble, even - - who suddenly started performing at pro bowl caliber levels just a few months later. And I'm pretty sure that this was more than just a sophomore year improvement. I'm also sure that Broncos weren't the only guys doing it.
Hopefully, there has been less of that over the past decade, or so, but players are still breaking new records in terms of speed and strength and endurance atthe combine every year. I think that this is mainly attributable to improved programs at the college level and the millions upon millions of bucks that attract more of the elite athletes to the game.
Ultimately, though, it's all relative. Unless someone develops some super computer simulation, we'll never know if Don Hutson would burn up the modern league or be a complete washout. Even then it wouldn't be completely fair to the "soul" of a Don Hutson. You'd have to ask what Don Hutson could have done if he'd had the benefit of modern nutrition, training, coaching, equipment, film study, and so forth.
In the end, all I can do is just look at how the players performed on a level field against the competition of their day.
Old Dude

And I should have mentioned the drain by other pro sports as a factor. Back in the 30s, and well into the 60's, if you were a muti-sport star, you'd make more money playing baseball than football. You'd also have a longer career and a less painful old age. But pro football is now lucrative enough to provide a real alternative for the superstars.

The Fighting Irish select Dave Grayson CB Dallas/Kansas 1961-64, Oakland 65-
Dave Grayson (born 1939) played offensive and defensive halfback at the University of Oregon. He was drafted by the American Football League's Dallas Texans in 1961 and played four years with the Texans/Chiefs before joining the Oakland Raiders in 1965. Grayson held the AFL record for longest interception return for a td, 99 yds against the New York Titans in 1961. He had an interception off George Blanda in the Texans' classic 1962 double-overtime championship game victory over the defending AFL Champion Houston Oilers. Grayson was All-AFL in Dallas/Kansas City in 1962, 1963 and 1964, and in Oakland in 1965 and 1967, when he again played on an AFL Championship team. At Oakland in 1968, he led the American Football League with ten interceptions.
He is the all-time AFL leader in interceptions with 47, for a 20-yard return average and 5 tds, and he averaged 25.4 yards on 110 kickoff returns. He is a member of the American Football League All-Time Team.

I saw Gale Sayers say in an interview (paraphrase) "You can't practice those moves, it can't be taught" Great players are born with an instinct that the rest of us don't have. Great players are great for a reason.

1969 NFL Rookie of the Year. In 1974 Bergey was traded to the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for two first-round and one second-round draft picks. Inspired a defense that guided their rise from doormat to contenders. The serious knee injury he suffered in 1979 might have spelled the end for many players, but Bill battled through the setback with a grim determination, and returned to the Eagles for the 1980 season. His perseverance was rewarded by a trip to the Super Bowl. Four time All-Pro. Five Pro Bowls. Set the NFL record for most interceptions by a linebacker. He earned Eagles MVP status three times.

First player ever to rush & receive for 1,000 yds in one season. Top 30 all-time in most major rushing categories. A key member of three Super Bowl winners. 4-time Pro Bowler. Appeared in the NFL Playoffs every year of his professional career (11 seasons) The only running back to lead the NFL in receptions (1985) Offensive player of the year (1988)
and...
Bill Bergey, LB, Bengals/Eagles 1969-80
http://www.stationave.com/lectures/10108017%5B1%5D.jpg
Couple of great picks there, Arkie.

The Fighting Irish select Chuck Noll HC, Pittsburgh Steelers 69-91
Charles Henry Noll. . .Only coach to win four Super Bowls (IX, X, XIII, XIV). . .23-year record: 209-156-1 in all games . . .Took over team that had never won title of any kind, 1969. . .Building program stressed annual player draft. . . First team finished 1-13. . .Steelers won first-ever championship (AFC Central), 1972. . .Won nine AFC Central titles. . . Guard-linebacker for Cleveland Browns, 1953-1959. . .Born January 5, 1932, in Cleveland, Ohio.
Chuck Noll was the head coach for the Pittsburgh Steelers for 23 seasons from 1969 until 1991. The Noll-led Steelers developed from a miserable 1-13 season in Noll's first campaign to the highest level ever attained by an National Football League team to date.
He won four Super Bowl championships in a six-year period starting with a 16-6 win over Minnesota in Super Bowl IX and culminating with a 31-19 win over the Los Angeles Rams in Super Bowl XIV. Pittsburgh also defeated Dallas twice in classic struggles, 21-17 in Super Bowl X and 35-31 in Super Bowl XIII. Noll took over a Pittsburgh team that had never won a championship of any kind in almost 40 years of National Football League play.
Through shrewd drafts and strong guidance, Noll helped team owner Art Rooney and the Steelers shed their “lovable losers” image. He quickly established a building program with an emphasis on the annual college draft to realize the ultimate goal of an NFL championship.
The rebuilding program bore fruit much more quickly than could have been expected. His fourth team in 1972 finished with an 11-3-0 record and the AFC Central Division title. The Steelers lost the 1972 AFC championship to the undefeated Miami Dolphins 21-17.
Altogether, Noll's team won nine AFC Central Division championships and they had winning records in 15 of his last 20 seasons with the Steelers. He retired with an impressive 209-156-1 record in all games, including a 16-8-0 post-season record.
Noll, a graduate of the University of Dayton, played seven seasons as a messenger guard and a linebacker for the Cleveland Browns from 1953 to 1959. He was an assistant coach with the Los Angeles/San Diego Chargers and the Baltimore Colts for nine years before accepting his first and only head-coaching job with the Steelers in 1969.

Old Farts negotiate a special deal with an offensive tackle and grant him concession rights at Invesco for his BBQ.
Winston Hill (born October 23, 1941) was a Tennis Champion in High School and an American college and professional football player. He played both offensive and defensive line in college at Texas Southern University and was an All-American. He was drafted by the Balimore Colts in 1963, but signed as a free agent with New York’s American Football League franchise in the same year that they became the New Y ork Jets, and went on to record the tenth-longest string of starts in pro football history at 174. As left tackle for the Jets he spent his career protecting Joe Namath's blind side and opening holes for the likes of Emerson Boozer, Matt Snell, and John Riggins. He was an American Football League All-Star in 1964, 1967,1968 and 1969, and a Pro Bowl selection in 1970, 1971, 1972 and 1973. He and Joe Namath joined the Los Angeles Rams in 1977 and both retired after one season.
Hill was an overpowering blocker who was instrumental in opening gaping holes for Matt Snell in the Third AFL-NFL World Championship Game (Super Bowl III) as the Jets decimated the right side of the Baltimore Colts defensive line and Snell gained 121 yards rushing in the Jets 16-7 upset victory. He was selected to the second-team All-time All-American Football League Team and is a member of the Texas Southern Sports Hall of Fame and th e New York Jets All-Time team. Mr. Hill hails from Gladewater, Tx. where his father, the late Garfield Hill, served as principal of Weldon High School.
For those that don't live in Denver, Winston Hill has had a BBQ place in the Denver area for years.

I will further solidify my defense and special teams with
the selection of Matt Blair LB Min 1974-1985.
http://www.sportsecyclopedia.com/nfl/minnesota/BlairMin.jpg
Drafted in the second round out of Iowa State, Blair was huge for a linebacker at 6'5", 240 pounds. He played in six Pro Bowls and he utilized his great speed, timing and wingspan to become one of the most effective kick and punt blockers who ever played. In fact, Minnesota's only touchdown in their 16-6 loss in Super Bowl IX was scored off a blocked punt by Blair.

Couple of great picks there, Arkie.
I lived in Jonesboro, AR for 30 years and saw it grow from 20,000 to over 50,000 primarily because of ASU. Bill Bergey was the greatest player in ASU history. No, not Arizona State, but Arkansas State University. ASU was still Div. I-AA when Bergey played. Most people don't know much about ASU except that they are the probably the worst team in Div. 1A football and they are a challenge to use on the XBox because they are usually the lowest rated team.

Chris "The Hangman" Hanburger, OLB, Redskins, 1965-1978.
He was taken by the Redskins in the 18th round of the 1965 draft. (Can you imagine going through 18 rounds in this day and age?)
I'm not sure why he went so late, but I can speculate. The Tarheels weren't a powerhouse. Hanburger had served a short term in the Army after High School and was therefore a little older than most of the college class. Maybe teams were concerned about his durability. But mainly, I would guess that it was his "tweenerness." At 6'2, 218 he didn't really have the bulk most teams were looking for in a linebacker, and while he was very fast, he didn't quite have the speed of a defensive back.
But it all worked out perfectly for an outside linebacker in an era where offenses were increasingly relying on short passes to RBs and TEs. Hanburger was fast enough to cover them, and proved to be strong enough and more than mobile enough to make big-time plays vs. the running game.
The results: 4 time all-pro; 9-time pro-bowler; NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 1972.
As for his durability, he was on his way to setting a club record for most consecutive starts when he finally missed a game - - due to an emergency apendectomy.
Note: The "Hangman" nickname was real. Hanburger was an early and accomplished practioner of the horsecollar tackle - - perfectly legal in those days. Here, we see him snagging Gale Sayers in 1968:

BTW, a couple guys were wondering about places to look for old-timers ...
I found this today. It's an archived "alltime" draft similar to ours, run mostly by NY Jets fans, done in 2004. They went 36 rounds with 12 teams.
http://www.jetsinsider.net/forums/archive/index.php/t-67855-p-1.html
It makes an interesting comparison, but I wouldn't rely too heavily on it. For example, Bubba Smith wasn't taken until the 32d round!!!
It's also interesting to see how hyped some rookies were back then. Robert Gallery was a sure Hall of Famer, don't you know...

My team selects Maxie Baughan OLB, Philadelphia/Los Angeles Rams/Washington
Solid pick! Rookie of the year, 9-time pro-bowler. Later, the head coach at Cornell and a Ravens LB coach. One of George Allen's favorite guys. Maxie actually retired at the end of the '73 season, but Allen coaxed him back to play one final year as part of the "Over the Hill Gang." Unfortunately, Maxie got hurt early that last season and saw very little action. I've wondered sometimes if he wouldn't have come closer to the Hall of Fame if he'd just stayed retired in '73 and gone out with a little more flourish.

I was actually going to take Chris Hanburger and Maxie was my #2 option!
Didn't Maxie play right next to Chuck Bednarik on the 1960 NFL Title team? If Maxie finally got the call to the Hall, what team do you think he would represent first? Eagles or Rams?

I don't know exactly how that works, but if Maxie had anything to say about it, my guess is that he'd go in as a Ram. Two reasons. First, he had sort of a falling out with Eagles management that led to the trade. Second, he was very close to George Allen and came out of retirement for the guy.
As far as Bednarik goes, in 1960, he was 35 years old. By this time everyone was playing two platoon football, and he was the starting center on the Eagles. But at some point early in the season Bob Pellegrini, the guy who would normally start as a LB got badly hurt, and the Eagles asked Bednarik to step in and play both ways. He was the last guy to do that on anything more than a novelty basis. So in that particular championship year - the last one ever for Philadelphia - you had two great linebackers, one a rookie and the other in the twilight of his career, playing side by side.

Darryl Talley (born July 10, 1960 in East Cleveland, Ohio) is a former American football linebacker who played for the Buffalo Bills, Atlanta Falcons, and Minnesota Vikings.
fter being selected in the second round by the Bills he played with them for 12 amazing seasons. He's the Bills' all-time leading tackler with 1137 tackles, and also record 38.5 sacks, 12 interceptions(with 189 return yards and 2 touchdowns), and 14 fumble recoveries(with 76 return yards). He averaged 120 tackles, 3.5 sacks and 6.2 takeaways per season and his 188 regular season games rank fifth-most in team history.
Darryl also continued to hunt down Dan Marino, from Pittsburgh, who played for the Miami Dolphins. During a 1983 38-35 overtime victory, Darryl sacked Marino five times.
Darryl played in the Bills' four Super Bowls and played in two Pro Bowls himself. Darryl left the Bills to play with the Falcons in the 1995 campaign and then with the Vikings. He ended his career in the 1996 season and won the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Distinguished Service Award in 2000.

With the final pick in the 29th round, #455 overall, JCMElway selects:
Ken Riley, CB, Bengals
• NFL career: Bengals cornerback, 1969-83. Fourth on NFL all-time interception list with 65. [Edit by OD: Technically, I think he's now 5th; he was #4 when he retired, but I believe Rod Woodson passed him by.]
http://www.sportsecyclopedia.com/nfl/cincy/RileyCin.jpg
Wanted: Ken Riley ... for habitual unarmed robbery. At least that’s how many an NFL quarterback probably felt back in the period from the late 1960s to the early 1980s. That’s because Riley, a former Cincinnati Bengals cornerback, made life miserable for signal-callers back then. He stole more passes than any Bengal ever has, finishing with 65 interceptions in a career that lasted from 1969-83 (he added two more picks in postseason play). Riley was a sixth-round draft choice in 1969 out of Florida A&M, where he threw the ball instead of intercepting it, as he was the Rattlers’ quarterback. His first season with the Bengals may have been his rookie year, but he didn’t play like it, intercepting four passes and returning one 66 yards, which would be the longest of his career. He also returned kickoffs that year and flourished in that department, too, averaging nearly 24 yards on 14 returns. Riley was nicknamed “Mr. Consistency,” probably due to the fact that, in his 15 seasons, there were only three in which he had fewer than three interceptions. But after snaring a career-high nine in 1976, tops in the AFC, Riley’s interception numbers dropped, as he recorded the same total - nine - during the next four years combined. Not coincidentally, Riley’s drop-off seasons coincided with the team’s tumble from playoff contender to the depths of despair, punctuated by two consecutive 4-12 seasons in 1978 and 1979. But as the Bengals returned to the upper echelon of the league in 1981, when they advanced to Super Bowl XVI, Riley’s interception totals rose right along with them. He had five each in 1981 and 1982, and capped off a brilliant career with eight picks in 1983, two of which were returned for touchdowns. He scored off five thefts overall in his career, and twice intercepted three passes in a game. Ken Riley was a special player. Whereas many professional athletes ride the bench to start their careers, then proceed on to great glory, but can’t let go and hang on a few years too long, Riley was different. He played 15 seasons - a lifetime in pro football - but what set him apart was that, in addition to being one of the top corners in his prime, he began his career on top, and ended it the same way.

With the first pick in the 30th Round, #456 overall, JCMElway selects:
Drew Pearson, WR, Cowboys
http://members.cox.net/cowboyswin/drew.jpg
In 1973, Pearson was selected as a free agent by the Dallas Cowboys, where he rose to become one of the NFL’s greatest wide receivers, earning career records of 489 receptions and 7,822 receiving yards, along with 189 rushing yards, 155 yards returning kickoffs, and 50 touchdowns(48 receiving and 2 fumble recoveries). Named one of the Top 20 Pro Football All-Time Wide Receivers, he was also recognized for his achievements by being named to the 1970's NFL Hall of Fame's All-Decade Team.
Pearson was named All-Pro 3 times (1974, 1976-77) All-NFC in 1975 and 2nd Team All-NFC in 1978. In addition, Pearson was a Pro Bowler in 1974, 1976 and 1977. Pearson led the National Football Conference (NFC) in pass receptions in 1976 with 58. He served as offensive captain for the Cowboys in 1977, 1978, 1982 and 1983.
Pearson’s success as a Cowboy resulted in three NFC Pro Bowl appearances, three Super Bowl appearances and a victory in Super Bowl XII in 1978. He also scored a touchdown in Super Bowl X.
In 1980, the Cowboys selected Pearson as their nominee for NFL Man of the Year. Pearson is known around the NFL as “Mr. Clutch” for his numerous clutch catches in game-winning situations, especially the "Hail Mary" reception from Roger Staubach that sealed the victory in a 1975 playoff game, one of the most famous plays in NFL history.

Nolan Cromwell
Nolan Cromwell (b. January 30, 1955) was an all-pro safety for the Los Angeles Rams of the American National Football League. Cromwell played for the Rams from 1977 through 1987 and was named to the Pro Bowl in four consecutive years, 1980 through 1983. He played on the Rams' 1979 Super Bowl XIV team.
Cromwell, an All-America quarterback at Kansas, was drafted by the Rams as a defensive back in the second round in 1977 and played his entire 11-year career in Los Angeles. (Cromwell had been an option quarterback at Kansas, and was projected as an NFL defensive back.) He was named NFC Defensive Player of the Year in 1980 by the Kansas Committee of 101, and was named by Football Digest as the NFL Defensive Back of the Year for 1984. At the time of his retirement, he was the Rams' all-time leader in interception return yardage with 671 yards in 37 interceptions.
After retirement as an active player, Cromwell went on to a long coaching career. He served as a coach with the Rams (1991-1992), Green Bay Packers (1992-1998), and Seattle Seahawks (1999-). As of this writing (2005), he is the Seahawks' Assistant Coach for Wide Receivers.

Sorry.....Mud slide on the highway....5 hour detour. Ugh.
I select William Roy (Link) Lyman, T, Chicago.
Undersized? Sure, so I'll be bringing him to centre.
In 1922, Guy Chamberlin, the player-coach of the Canton Bulldogs, recruited Roy (Link) Lyman, a 6-2, 233 pound tackle from the University of Nebraska, to play pro football. Lyman was no stranger to Chamberlin, who was also a Nebraska alumnus.
Chamberlin’s recruit went on to star with the Bulldogs during their back-to-back undefeated seasons of 1922 and 1923. The following season the Canton franchise was sold and several Canton players, including Lyman, moved on to Cleveland, where the Cleveland Bulldogs captured the 1924 NFL title. Lyman split the 1925 season between a new Canton franchise and the Frankford Yellowjackets.
Following the 1925 season he joined the Chicago Bears during that team’s famous cross-country barnstorming tour that featured Red Grange. Lyman remained with the Bears for the rest of his career that ended almost as it had begun. The Bears won the NFL title in 1933 and a divisional crown in 1934, Lyman’s final season.
Many pro football historians believe that the constant shifting by defensive players before each play in modern professional football can be traced back to Lyman, who regularly resorted to similar ploys. His sliding, shifting style of defensive line play confused his opponents and made him one of the most respected players of his time. Lyman explained that the idea of shifting was an instinctive move to fool a blocker. He had a unique ability to diagnose a play and many times he would make his move just as the ball was snapped.
Whether it was luck or a result of his outstanding play, Lyman experienced just one losing season during his 16 seasons of high school, college, and professional football. A contributor to the end, Bears coach George Halas insisted Lyman was stronger and tougher during his last two seasons than when he first joined the team eight years earlier.

Lee Roy Jordan, MLB Cowboys, 1963-1976
http://www.sportsecyclopedia.com/nfl/dallas/LRJordanDal.jpg
Considered the greatest middle linebacker in Alabama history. With tremendous sideline to sideline speed, few have ever played the game like Jordan did. Bear Bryant called him "the finest player I ever coached." Alabama gives its annual "Lee Roy Jordan Headhunter Award" following spring practice to the player who hits the hardest and has the best nose for the ball.
Taken by Dallas with the team's top pick in the 1963 draft, Jordan was a key member of the Cowboys' famed "Doomsday Defense" for 14 seasons.
2-Time All-Pro · 5-Time Pro Bowl · Cowboys Record 1,236 career tackles · Cowboys Record 743 solo career tackles · Second career assisted tackles, 493 · 1 Super Bowl Title · 5 Conference Championships · 8 Division titles · 48 career takeaways. Selected to Cowboys All-Time Team (1984) Three-time Finalist for the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

I remember him as a very good player in a strong Cardinal secondary in the mid-60's that also had Pat Fischer & Larry Wilson. Unfortunately, I think this was toward the end of his career. I imagine that he would have had more press if he'd played somewhere besides San Francisco & St. Louis. Both of those teams sort of flirted around the .500 mark.

The Fighting Irish select Ed Budde OG Kansas City 63-76
Ed Budde (born November 2, 1940), a product of Denby High School in Detroit, Michigan and later Michigan State University, was the number one draft pick of the American Football League's Dallas Texans in 1963. The team became the Kansas City Chiefs before the 1963 season began. An offensive guard, Budde went on to play for the Chiefs longer (14 years) than any other player, with the exception of Hall of Fame punter Jerrel Wilson. Budde was huge: 6-foot-5 and 260 pounds (118 kg); and his explosive blocks could spring a running back loose or keep defenders away from the Chiefs signal-caller.
He was selected to the AFL All-Star team in 1963, ‘66, ‘67, ‘68 and 1969, and he played in six AFL All-Star games. Budde was the first offensive lineman to be selected by the Associated Press as an Offensive Player of the Week. As the heart of the Chiefs’ offensive line, his overpowering presence helped the Chiefs to win two American Football League Championships (1966 and 1969) and a World Championship in Super Bowl IV. Ed Budde is a member of the All-Time All-AFL Team. His son Brad Budde was an All-American at the University of Southern California.

Sorry to jump in so quick after Eddie's time has expired, but I will be away for awhile.
Old Farts never pass up a chance to strengthen their defensive line and select Dave Butz
DAVE BUTZ
* Came to Purdue from Park Ridge, Ill., where he earned 10 varsity letters at Maine South High School, playing football, basketball and track
* Was a two-time high school All-American in football and the Illinois High School discus champion, setting a state record
* Born in Lafayette, Ala., and is a nephew of Earl Butz, former United States Secretary of Agriculture and a retired Purdue professor and dean
* Was a three-year letterwinner and a starter in 1970, '71 and '72 for head coach Bob DeMoss
* At 6-foot-7, 280 pounds, was rated one of the best defensive linemen in the country, making six different All-America teams
* Was the 1972 recipient of the Zipp Award as college football's outstanding player, along with being a finalist for the Lombardi Award
* Also played in the East-West Shrine All-Star Game in San Francisco and the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala., where he was named Defensive MVP
* Went on to enjoy a stellar career in the NFL after being a first-round draft pick of the St. Louis Cardinals
* Played two seasons in St. Louis and 14 in Washington, helping the Redskins to three Super Bowl appearances, two of which they won (1982 and '87)
* Was selected as the NFL's Defensive Player of the Year in 1983 when he also played in the Pro Bowl
* Was an alternate to the Pro Bowl in 1981 and 1984
* Became known as the NFL's Ironman, missing just four games in 16 seasons
* Retired in 1989, having played in more games than any previous Redskin
* Chosen as a member of Purdue's All-Time Team for its first 100 years football
* Now serves as a consultant and board member for the National Rifle Association

Ray Donaldson C/G Bal/Indy, Sea, Dal 1980-1996. The six time Pro Bowler was best known for his rugged run blocking. Despite playing on some terrible Colts teams, Donaldson finished strong, starting at center for the 1995 Super Bowl Champion Cowboys in his 16th NFL season.
