Unlike the banal slam dunk contest, there were some outstanding volunteers who intend to put on a good show on all-star weekend. This might even be one of the best shows of the weekend.

Here are the contestants (including 2 MVP candidates):

Dirk Nowitzki
Chauncey Billups
Ray Allen
Jason Terry
Raja Bell
Quentin Richardson (last year's winner)

"I'm very excited," Terry said. "I won the college 3-point competition in 1999. The chance to win it at the All-Star Game is a tremendous honor. I'm just going to have fun and enjoy the moment. Dirk's in it. So hopefully, we'll meet up in the finals."

"If somebody's going to beat me," said Nowitzki, "it better be JET."

The 3pt contest always has some big named stars involved...even way back when Larry Legend was tearing it up..Its still the best competition they have during all-star weekend...and the one where most great shooters want to show their skill...

I'm actually excited that Dirk is in it... We all know he can shoot well, but still, you never see PF's in that competition.

Too bad they can't get any bigger stars in the Dunk competition. Last yeasr were good, but it was way better when guys like Dominique, jordan, and Spud Webb competed.

i think this years is gonna be very good. no real big names in it but young athletic guys are. i think i read somewhere Andre Iguodala, Hakim Warrick, Josh Smith, and little Nate Robinson are in it. my pick is Iguodala to win and ive been right the past 3 years (i actually won money on it last year). but i think this has the potential to be one of the better ones in recent history.

It's all about Dirk v. Ray Allen. That should make it interesting.

Definately, I'm excited for the dunk contest. Although I think if Nate Robinson pulls off anything even remotely cool, he'll win it based on his size.

LETS GO CHAUNCAAAAAAAAAY

as far as the dunk contest goes, i wish they would just get the MAJOR dunkers from recent years in there for once, for the battle royal of dunking.

AND, change the rules so we can have 10 dunkers (in no particular order)...

Kobe
Vince (who I still think has the most hellaciously radical dunk in history) Carter
T-Mac
J. Richardson
Josh Smith
Amare Stoudamire
Stevey boy Francis
Andre Iguadola
Lebron

and just for ****'s and giggles, our very own former Bird Man. Now that he's not playing for us, we could use a little comic relief in the Dunk contest (as long as he doesn't get 73 ****ing tries this year)

Are you serious or being sarcastic? You do know he got kicked out of the league for 2 years, right?

I think it would be cool if they allowed stars from other sports to get involved... For instance, I'd love to see Tony Gonzalez enter the competition... Or other professional atheletes who think they can put down a dunk...

That'd never be allowed to happen, but I still think it would be cool...

Funny you say that TJ, because the other night SportsCenter had this highlight deal of a charity BBall event, and T.O. was playing, along with some other guys... Anyways, T.O. threw down some huge dunks. All these guys are athletes, it would make for a pretty interesting show.

I left before i could respond, but yes, I was being sarcastic. ;D
I'm never EVER going to forget the most embarrasing 5 minutes of All-star basketball in history. I'm just glad he was wearing a hornets jersey.

Btw, did they ever figure out which drug he was using? Since he's on the list for "drugs of abuse", it aint the sweet cheeba. Hopefully that lanky ass didn't pick up a meth habit... :(

Yeah, it was the worst dunk contest ever. All my boys still gave me ****, since he was a former nugget. I just hung my head in shame.

And I don't know what his drug was, coke or meth or something. That part is real sad.

I'd say Vince Carter. What he did in that dunk contest was unbelievible. 360, the other way? And he added a windmill on the end of it. Where did that come from? Dude dunked from the free throw line, with two hands!! When he did the between the leg dunk from the lob from his teammate, he said right afterwards that he'd never attempted that dunk in his life. Just made it up on the spot. Dude was nuts.

One player that never gets metioned is Harold Minor. He was a total bust as a player, but what he did in the dunk contest was amazing. Dude had power and grace. He just had a flare for it. Too bad he sucked as a pro. He should have stayed in college another year or two.

I've seen some dunk contests back in the 90s with athletes from other sports. It was pretty good.

That was one of those moments that you don't even want to look at the TV. They must have taken that guy away on the short bus. I was hoping somebody would just go out there and stop him from making a fool out of himself.

Word, VC was great. Putting his whole forearm through the basket was one of the coolest things I'd ever seen.

And yikes @ a Harold Minor reference. Now there is an obscure NBA player for you.

Harold Miner was the next Jordan while Jordan was still around. There have been many "next Jordans" and I believe that he was the first.

Yes, JR Rider!

All I remember was he made this one play one night... he was falling out of bounds, like, threw the ball up trying to save it, and it went in the basket for 3 points. It was amazing. Pure luck, but nontheless.

There will never be another Michael Jordan. Ever.

While I basically agree with you in principal llama, I also think that LeBron is making a strong case in his young career that he is the next MJ.

Once he gets down the game winning shot, watch out.

How can he be the next Jordan? He has a totally different game. He'll be LeBron which should be pretty good in its own right. LeBron said himself that he's missing the killer instinct of guys like Kobe Bryant. Kobe Bryant's will to win is a pale shadow of Jordan's. LeBron has to become hungry to get to that level...how do you become hungry when you have everything handed to you before you earn any of it?

I see LeBron as a more athletic Magic, although the Cavs don't seem to put the ball in his hands enough to take charge the way Magic could. I agree that Magic's game is very unique, and unfortunately isn't emulated as it should be.
