Blitzing Dog and I took a couple of hours to do a 4 rounder. With the Senior Bowl in January there were some players who jumped up (i.e. S. Moss) and those who took a slide (i.e. Hagan). Major changes will take place later this month with the Indy workouts - so we'll probably do another one next month.

We did this by alternating picks - so if you like a pick it was mine, if you hate a pick, it was BD's. ;) It's simply a mock, so don't get too riled up. It's not all that great for your blood pressure!! Here goes:

If anyone doubts this is a strong/deep year for the draft, sit down and compile a multi-round mock. You will be surprised how many good players you will have to leave off the list! I don't think there is anyway, for instance, that Hagan drops to the start of the 4th round - but it isn't all that easy to fit all the good players even into four rounds. And I'm certain there are a number of guys who will emerge on the radar at the combine later this month.

A great year to have 6 picks in the first 4 rounds!

Definitely agree Spring. This mock is filled with so much talent at almost every position, that solid players who in most years would be in the top few rounds, might slip into the second day. With possibly compensatory picks, and the alleged rumor of trading away Lelie, we could have a lot of ammo.

I don't see why people are so incessant on us trading up, I like where we're sitting, and as it seems, we've had relatively good success drafting players late.

Yep - this is a deep draft except at high end WR and QB. Time to load up on Big Guys who do all of the dirty work.

DB, I swear you must be Bullock's agent. :)
I wouldn't kick about Avant in the 4th, but he never lived up to his reputation this year and I am not sure I would pick him any earlier.

Just his PR guy. ;)

I think Avant has skill though, which could lead to something in the NFL. Its kind of like the MoC pick without the crap to go along with it. Still if Advant would really listen to Smith, he might end up living up to that rep.

I am not crazy about picking Scott with the 29th pick but the rest looks good.

I think that was the toughest choice. It likely came down to Bing there or an OT. Part of the thinking was that there might not be as much a drop-off from Bing to the next S as there might be from Scott to an OT still there in the late 2nd.

Rascal
02-08-2006, 12:37 PM
Yeah based on who was taken before there weren't any real good choices of who I wanted at that position in your draft. In that situation I would like to move down if possible.

Not bad, but why are we drafting Scott when (assuming we resign Lepsis) we have 2 tackles that we will have fairly large, several year contracts??? We need help on the OL but we need help at G and C not at tackle.

SpringStein
02-08-2006, 01:04 PM
Foster, imo, took a step back this year, and I am not confident he'll be the player we hoped when he was drafted in the 1st round. Of course we all hope (and expect) that we re-sign Lepsis, but that is not a guarantee. OT is such a critical spot and if you have a chance to get an athletic, strong OT - I'm willing to take that shot. And I wasn't high enough on any OG to take one at 29.

Eslinger in the 3rd was the OG that seems like a good fit with our system. Plus it will be inetresting to see how Chris Myers has progressed over the past year at OG.

Who would you have had taking him? I can say that I don't think either BD or I had an eye on "leaving" a good player on the table for Denver.

I like that draft a lot. Hali would be awesome, I don't know about Scot at #29 though. I would have taken Daryl Tapp over Bullocks. Other than that I love it.

Thank you for your work on this mock draft.
Admittedly my knowledge of this year's draft is not that deep. With that stated, there are a few names that are very intriguing to me -- as these players represent either an upgrade in speed/size or address needs:

1st round
a) Vernon Davis TE Maryland
b) Manny Lawson DE/OLB N. Car
c) Eric Winston OT Miami

2nd round
a) Claude Wroten DT LSU
b) Daryn Colledge OL Boise St
c) Anthony Fasano TE Notre Dame
d) Charles Spencer OG Pitt

3rd round
a) Babatunde Oshinowo DT Stanford
b) Fred Matua OG USC
b) Hank Baskett WR New Mexico

4th Round
a) Jerome Harrison RB WSU

Great job, really good draft as a whole, though I disagree with some picks. A few real quick:

Manny Lawson to NYG. They run a 4-3 with two double digit sack ends last season. Lawson is a rush end in a 4-3. He's a horrible pick for the Giants.

Wright/Mahelona/Watson all falling to the second half of the second round. Broderick Bunkley is in the same group as these guys, a lot of scouts he might rank him as the fourth best out of the four. Also, you only selected two DTs before the 52nd pick (Bunkley and Ngata), in a draft that is largely built on line talent I don't see that happening. All four carry 1st round grades from almost all draft tracking/scouting services.

Maurice Stovall in Rd. 3. I hope so myself, so that we can steal him in the 2nd, but in a draft otherwise very sparse at the WR position a 6'5" deep threat who put up great numbers in his first year of true pro style offense and is young for his class will go pretty early I think.

As I said before though, great job, this kicks the ever loving snot out of 99% of mock drafts on the intarweb. Bet you're more accurate than Kiper. ;P

Thanks, Drek - I'm absolutely positive we are way off base on a bunch of picks! I think the biggest mistake all mockers make, and that includes me, is simply looking for what players might fit with the needs of a particular team. And that is why we are always so surprised come draft day.

It's a fun thing to do - but truthfully, the odds of hitting on 10-15% once you get out of the top 10 ends up being pretty good. So I'm not going to take myself or my choices all that seriously!

SpringStein
02-09-2006, 03:23 PM
btw - Wright & Mahelona are both guys, from what I read, have been falling from where they were a couple of months ago. Inconsistency has hurt both and I could see them both being 2nd rounders. It's a tough year to compete with a lot of great athletes at TE/LB/RB/DB.

Spring and I put no homerism into this, the draft is just that good. For instance I am the biggest Ko Simpson lover you will meet but I had to give him to San Diego whereas if I was a homer I would have let him fall to us and give Hali to someone else (cause I know SS likes him) and so do I, so if you think homerism is a part of this mock it is not.

Glad to get good response.

Imagine that. Dog hot for a DB! All I can remember from the draft that brought us Lelie is you posting Ed Reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeed in every other post. Maybe it was EVERY post! :)

You do have an eye for DB talent, Scott. You must be excited that your boy Brandon has re-upped!

Have you ever warmed up to Lelie after Shanahan crushed your dreams on that fateful April day? ???

You and George did a heck of a good job on this mock.... as usual.

BlitzingDog

I always liked Lelie even when we drafted him over.. sniff sniff Ed Reed sniff sniff. But I still would have taken Reed obviously. I am happy Brandon was resigned, I know he didn't turn out quite the way I expected but I did stick with him when everyone was down on him. :)

Thanks for the Props! Now go out and find me your fav Texas Christian players.
