John Elway played in five Super Bowls in a 16-year career with the Denver Broncos. He retired after being named Most Valuable Player in Super Bowl XXXIII, the Broncos' second straight title. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2004 and now is co-owner of the defending Arena Football League champion Colorado Crush. He was in town last week to promote the AFL and took time to speak with Newsday's Marshall Lubin before taping an episode of YES Network's CenterStage.
Do you get out and practice with the guys?
I get out to practice. I'm going to throw a little bit more this year because we're really tight and we only have one quarterback right now. We may have to throw in a righty from the bullpen. They can't hit me. They come close to me and they're cut. Physically I'm old, but mentally I'm 12.
You played with Oneonta of the Yankees in 1982. While you were in Denver, the Yankees were winning championships. Did you ever have second thoughts? Ever think of being a two-sport guy?
No. I knew I made the right choice. Back when I was doing it, it was either one or the other. I always had some time off.
What do you think about the season Denver had?
I think they had a great year. Jake [Plummer] had a great year, finally getting settled in there and understanding the offense. They just ran into a team that's playing better than they were. They'll be back.
Do you think he can lead them to a Super Bowl?
I do. He's never been in that situation. People think that since he's been in the league like eight years, he's supposed to know what it's like to be like that. Just like with Ben . He's playing a lot better this year than last year because he's got the experience. Jake should be a lot better next year because now he's been there and tasted it a little bit and he'll learn from it.
Who do you think is going to win the Super Bowl?
I think Pittsburgh will. I think they're playing really good. I think Seattle would learn a lot about what Denver did against them in the same scheme. I think Pittsburgh is playing great. As long as they don't get too full about what they've been hearing.
