Dear Avalanche players,
to score a goal on PP you have to take care of the puck and manage to get some shots on goal.

it just not our year, we will not win the division for the first time since the team has been in Denver. Goal tending is suspect Abby is too streaky not consistant enough, gives up too many weak goals, our defense is not that good either. Super Joe is getting up there in age and Milan, Alex are good but not Sakic, Forsberg good, like they were in their heyday. I think the rebuilding process must begin. with the new cap putting band-aids on it won't help, remember Selanne and Karyia?

Vancouver passed us in the final week.
The team will be fine. It was never going to be a Cup contender this season after losing Forsberg and Foote. Next year they'll be a lot of cap space to use and shore up the team, probably on defense and in net.
I'm just trying to enjoy a team that's scored a lot of goals, is fun to watch and has shown some good things for the future. We've got four rookies that have played well (Svatos, Richardson, Budaj, McCormack) and a handful of strong prospects in juniors or NCAA (Wolski, Statsny, Stoa, Fritsche, etc). Wojtek Wolski is really starting to become an intruiging player for next season. We do need some serious help in the upcoming draft on the blueline.
Right now I'm hoping to make the playoffs and win a series. No more high expectations might be a good thing.

Also, with the new salary cap, it's harder to play through injuries to top players. In 2003-'04 the Avs had a ton of injuries to key players and still finished with over 100 points. This year they've played without 3 of their top 6 forwards for long stretches (Konowalchuk, Turgeon, Hejduk) and there's just not enough depth to compensate. Hell, today Brad May and Cody McCormick were actually out there on the powerplay when the Avs desperately needed a goal.
There's no excuses, though. If you would have told me before the season that Joe Sakic was a -10 and Rob Blake was -12 and the Avs weren't in last place I would have laughed at you. The big money guys on the roster just aren't playing that well. The team is being carried by Tanguay, Svatos and a bunch of solid role players like Laperriere, Brunette, Laaksonen, McLean, etc. We also got lucky that Brett Clark became a viable top-4 defenseman from out of nowhere.
Ian Laperriere is such a good, smart player. I really wish he was on the team between 1999 and 2002 when we won one Cup and came just short in game 7's the other three times. I think he would have been the difference between one Stanley Cup and two or three in that stretch.

If Sakic and Blake don't come back next season, the Avs could be facing a couple of rough years.

OK, I don't follow hockey all that much, but why do some games go into OT and each team gets to take 3 shots at the goalie, then today I see a game (Dallas vs someone) where it looked like they played a regular type period/game for OT? What gives???

What gives???If the game ends in regulation tied then there's a 5 minute, sudden death overtime. If it's still tied after the overtime then there's a shootout. The shootout was only added to the NHL this season. Before 2005-'06 the game would end tied after overtime if there was no goal.
In the playoffs there is no shootout and the teams play 20 minute periods until someone scores. IMO playoff overtime hockey is the best action in sports.

Thanks, I thought maybe they flipped a coin or something too see if they played 5 minutes like they used too, or did the shootout thing, LOL!
I remember watching Dallas vs. Buffalo a few years ago, they had like 6 periods if I recall correctly, in a playoff game.

Like they say on the Family Feud, "Good answer! Good answer!" The rules from NHL.com:
Overtime: http://www.nhl.com/rules/rule89.html
Shootout: http://www.nhl.com/rules/rule89.html#b Earlier this season, the Avs needed a seven round shootout to beat the Devils.
