View Full Version : Colts: Wayne likely to be franchised
ESPN's John Clayton reports the Indianapolis Colts are expected to use their franchise tag on WR Reggie Wayne, who is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent, if they are unable to work out a long-term deal with him before free agency begins.

Wow, franchise tag your 2nd best WR? Just pay him a long term deal!!!
Im betting on the colts drafting a RB first round.

That seems stupid. That's a whole lot of money to tie up at one position - on one side of the ball, for that matter.

well they haven't signed him long term so its not really tied up. I think the colts should employ some eagles strategy right now. they have a bunch of reasonably talented defensive players that maybe if u gave good signing bonuses too u could sign long term. they've already lost two pro bowl linebackers in peterson and washington. I think bracket, june, freeney, mathis, triplet, doss, sanders are all worth keeping around long term.

Haven't they already spent like 3 times the national debt on that offense, with most of that going to payton?

It makes perfect sense - if your goal is to make Manning happy instead of winning.

u guys are so predictable. I think whats going on is they are worried about keeping an overall elite talent level on the team. there are only so many great players in the NFL. they want to keep theirs, which right now means freeney, manning, wayne, harrison, edge(ok so they're ditching one!).
and if they really wanted to make manning look good I think edge would get them more results short term.

Wayne, great?? Until he proves he is a legit #1, he isnt "great". I will give you that he is "great" in his role tho.
edit: but imo, they could probably plug in Stokley and he would be as equally great.

meh, he has caught more passes than marvin two years in a row now I think. I dont know who they bother to cover w/ their #1(prolly still marvin) but reggie has shown great hands, great route running, great body control, great concentration. Unless he's too unathletic to get away from #1 corners I dont see what he hasn't shown yet.
stokley would be close, certainly stokley is good. probably some drop off tho.

They must really think highly of Wayne. Why else would you pay your #2 receiver the average of the top 5 paid receivers in the NFL? Seems pretty steep to me.

Colts are really becoming the Dan Marino led Dolphins now once they lose Edge, all WR's for Peyton and no running game.

He is good but not great. A product of the system. If you say anyone can run the ball behind Denver's line then you should also say anyone can be productive in the colts passing game as they have shown. I think he will be just like Peerless Price and turn into an average receiver when or if he leaves Indy.
