Punxsutawney Groundhog Sees His Shadow
By DAN NEPHIN, Associated Press Writer 16 minutes ago
PUNXSUTAWNEY, Pa. - Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow, but it was hard to find a complainer in the crowd on Gobbler's Knob, where the morning temperature was well above freezing and Thursday's high was expected to hit 48 degrees.

In this photo provided by Vaseline, Groundhog Punxsutawney Phil gets a reaction from Vaseline employees Laurel Johnson, left, and Margaret Baker, center, as he emerges from a box after handler Bill Deeley, right, placed him there while visiting Vaseline's exhibit tent in Barclay Square in the center of Punxsutawney, PA, Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2006. When throngs of people descend upon Punxsutawney to celebrate Groundhog Day on Thursday, businesses and other groups will try to ride the coattails of the cute and cuddly Punxsutawney Phil to gain publicity. Winter was mild in Iowa for the most part...only one real cold snap in November...it was about 48 yesterday....that's t-shirt weather up here...the weather starts breaking by mid Feb so I'm a couple weeks from blizzards. They can happen till april, but after February it's all down hill.
Then the winter of the offseason begins...

Does he come out of the ground or a jar of Vaseline with a hooker golpher? I'm not sure Phil doesn't just hang out in Vegas at Bally's....

Winter has been very extreme here. We haven't had this much snow in over 10 years. But, the good side to that...ski season will be awesome into the spring!! :yayaya:

Good morning all -
so here's my question, since we're talking about winter. Where is it????
I moved down from Grand Lake last year, and so far, I haven't seen anything resembling a colorado winter yet. Welllll, i guess there was ONE week of subzero temps, but that was it. I haven't worn a jacket since the middle of October, and I've had to scrape my windows a total of 3 TIMES so far.
Maybe it's just because I'm used to the snow and cold of 8,000 feet, but jeez! I was hoping for a little more white stuff down here.
Is it always like this in our city during the winter months? I'm not really complaining, but it just seems weird to me.
Usually Jan-Feb are the coldest months, and so far it's been hangin out in the 40s-50s.
One more thing, does this mean summer starts earlier too? I'm used to about 3 SOLID months of warm up in G.L., starting about mid May. I'm guessing we get a little more down here.
When does summer officially start?

The Christmas Storm of '82 was incredible...the drift went to my eve on the east side...then it dropped to -20.
Worst storm ever was I think in 72 in Iowa...not sure the year...it blew fromt he west, then the east, then the west, then the east...then the west as the low just hovered over us...then the wind picked up and it turned -40. When it finally calmed down, the Electra sheltered in the crib was literally packed with snow. I'm talking packed to the ceiling tightly. This wasn't a cheaply built car. The engine compartment was completely packed. Dad worked on the delicate work of cleaning the engine compartment while I worked on digging out the interior. Freakin' unreal. Thank God we had a generator.

that was sooooooooome storm. From my brief stint on the Neb/Iowa border in my younger days, I can start to draw a gusty picture of the craziness.
What i meant by officially, was, unofficially. when will my shorts wearing be looked upon as status quo rather than loony?
by the way, I haven't been in any HUGE storms, but about 4 years ago or so, we got close to 5 and a half feet in about 36 hours. I literally had to climb out of my second story window to dig out my front door.
It was quite something. Not really that cold or anything, just LOTS OF SNOW. You couldn't see cars, just moguls. It was insane, but it was TONS O FUN for the first two days. Lots of roof jumping, skitching, sledding, snowball fights, snow cave BBQ-s, and just general hoo ha. Quite fun.
It was like a county wide snow day, and everyone was just having a good time.
Gotta love big storms

Denver just simply shut down...the Mayor was thrown out...we had a lane on I-25 that would simply END for a month. Bring resoursefull lads, we got a rope and made a trek of about a mile to the liquor store...lassoed a keg and made ourselves sled dogs draggin' it back on the road....even for youngsters, it was pretty exausting....

The citywide vacation was fun in the aftermath.
The word blizzard comes from my home town of Estherville Iowa, on the NW border to HornHead land. Worst are the whiteouts when you can't see 5 feet in front of your face. In one, a car went off the road and was sitting 20 feet from a prominant house...she never even saw it till morning.

I remember watching you poor people down here on the news. LOL. There were something like 115 plows rollin around causing all kinds of mayhem i'm sure. Nice job with the keg roping, sounds like a pretty tiring trip.
Because of the ski areas up there (winter park and silvercreek), I swear HWY 34 was open about an hour after the last flake fell. I couldn't believe it when my boss told me to be at work EARLY the next day. F***in B***ard. I got to enjoy the snow for a little while, then lost about 5 years off my back shoveling snow for about three days straight. :( I'll never forget seeing all that snow though.....CRAZINESS!
I was pretty proud of all you city folk :P I don't remember anybody dying or anything

Happy groundhog day! Stupid winter lasting for 6 more weeks son of bit.To quote Bill Murry from the Movie Groundhog Day: "You want a prediction about the weather, you're asking the wrong Phil. I'll give you a winter prediction: It's gonna be cold, it's gonna be grey, and it's gonna last you for the rest of your life."

I haven't been around much but January was pretty much par for the course. We usually don't start getting snowed on til late Feb or March. Don't worry it will come as soon as all the trees think that it's time to start growing leaves..........then crash a few feet of snow will rock the city trashing the place for a couple weeks.
Rule of thumb for gardening in Denver that I've learned. Don't plant your sprouted vegi plants until after Cinco De Mayo.
