Nalen pact done deal
By Bill Williamson
Denver Post Staff Writer
Detroit - Tom Nalen is a Bronco for life.
Late Tuesday night, the Broncos and Nalen - a slam dunk Ring of Fame member someday - struck a deal, according to a source close to the negotiations.
The complicated deal essentially will keep the 34-year-old center with the Broncos for the rest of his career. There are loopholes in the contract that can keep him with Denver longer.
Now, Denver's biggest free-agent targets are left tackle Matt Lepsis and defensive tackle Gerard Warren. The team was urgent about Nalen's contract since it was set to expire Feb. 7.
Drafted by the Broncos in 1994, Nalen said he was was considering retirement in August because his contract voided. After the loss in the AFC title game, Nalen said he wanted to continue to play for Denver.

Great news on 2 counts: Nalen remains our center until he retires and Hamilton remains at guard as well.

The funny thing about the media ban was when they were in the Super Bowl, and the league made them talk. They wouldn't shut up.

I think his bad play in Cleveland was a product of Davis's scheme. He really turned the corner when Davis was fired...Resign him and add a big DT and speed DE in the first day and that line will be set...

To be perfectly honest, I'm not sure that we wouldn't have better off sliding Hamilton to center and using the Nalen money on someone like Hutchinson to play LG. One of our weaknesses is pass protecion in obvious passing situations, and I think part of the reason for this is not enough strength in the interior of our line. Still, can't complain too much about bringing back an all-pro.

Hutch would take time to learn the system. While he might be the better bet for the long term signing he brings the risk of the unknown. We know Hamilton and Nalen can both play at or near Pro-Bowl levels at their respective line spots, together, and in our offense.
Also, the money isn't disclosed yet. I'm willing to bet that Hutchinson gets a lot more than Nalen did on this deal.
Oh, and did I mention how much I like the idea of Nalen moving to an assistant OL coach position when he does retire? Seriously, who better to carry on our zone blocking schemes than the center piece of it for so many years! (pun intended)

Strenghts: Decent size and great strength. Very fundamentally sound. Good athlete; has great quickness and agility for an interior lineman. A team leader. Very smart player.Weaknesses: Is better in the pass protection than run blocking.
Comments: Could make the switch to guard, but is very underrated as a center. His experience and knowledge of the game makes him an ideal candidate to be a team leader in the middle of the offensive line. I'M WITH YOU !!! ROHIRRIM

I saw Tom Nalen last night at Skate City in Littleton. I saw this tall, long-haired dude from the back wearing flip flops, shorts and a hooded sweatshirt (it was kids night for a local parochial school) and I thought "who the hell is that guy" [note to readers, it gets cold here in Denver at night in the winter, and you don't see many people in shorts and flip flops]. And he turns around and sure enough it was Nalen.
He must be tough as hell because he certainly isn't a huge man.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- The Broncos and Tom Nalen got what they both wanted -- an extension to the center's career in Denver.
Nalen signed a contract extension with the club this week, putting to rest any questions over whether the veteran would return to the Broncos for a 13th season with the club and getting the team's offseason off to a promising start.
When the offseason began, Head Coach Mike Shanahan was optimistic that Nalen's return could eventually come to fruition. As it turned out, it took not even a week and a half.
"I feel very good about bringing back Tom," Shanahan said on Jan. 24. "I talked to Tom. If we didn't have Tom back, I'd be very disappointed.
"You never know in free agency, but I will do everything I can to make sure he's back here."
Nalen considered remaining with the Broncos his best option for numerous reasons, including some unrelated to football.
"That'd be the best stuation for me and my family," Nalen said last week. "I've never thought about playing for another team since I've got here. They've been good to me and my family. I certainly wouldn't go to another place if the dollars were even. I'd stay in Denver."
The recent season was one of Nalen's best, even though neither Pro Bowl nor All-Pro honors sailed his way.
"I think he played very well," Shanahan said. "Tom is a guy who gives you everything that he has on every play. If he's not giving you everything that he's got, then he'll retire because that's his makeup."
"I think he was a bit healthier this year, he wasn't as beaten up than in years past, that would be the reason that he played at a very high level.

I love it. Not just the re-signing of Nalen (no way he should finish his career anywhere but Denver), but the fact that the Broncos are being so aggressive this offseason. The meeting with Owens, the Ricky Williams trade talks, it's obvious that the Broncos are really in attack mode this offseason after getting within a game of the Super Bowl. As I said, I love it. :yep:

Washington would mean the Eagles sending him to a division rival and having to face him twice a year. Not likely.
The Chefs might do it just to keep him from landing here, but why would a team who's needs are clearly on defense fork over a draft pick and then pay out the large amount of money Owens is going to want just to keep him out of Denver?
I just can't see it happening.

I get the feeling it's more a a control factor. The Eagles can control where he goes. Meaning a AFC team. At the same the time, the trade partner has control in not being out bid dollar wise. The Eagles do not want to see him any where near the NFC East. Just like when the 49ers traded him to the Ravens. They didn't want the guy back in the NFC either.

How people got under the impression that Owens is going to sign for anything under what he perceives his market value to be is beyond me.
Owens wants to get paid and he isn't going to settle for anything less than a deal that makes him one of the highest paid receivers in the NFL.

People can throw numbers at TO all day long but if he never becomes a FA and gets a deal he's willing to sign, perhaps he'll bite and take the security because it's already becoming apparent that some teams are genuinely interested while others are throwing a smokescreen out to drive up TO's price for a division rival. TO may take a risk by not accepting a renegotiated salary and entering the FA market.
