As assistant head coach and O linemen coach. Getting Sherman would be a huge plus for that team!

Sherman considers Texans' assistant offer
By Len Pasquarelli
ESPN.com

Former Green Bay Packers coach Mike Sherman met Friday with Houston Texans officials and is considering an offer to join first-year head coach Gary Kubiak's staff in the role of assistant head coach/offensive line.

Sherman and Kubiak worked together on the Texas A&M staff under then-Aggies coach R.C. Slocum in 1992-93 and are said to have a solid relationship. Landing Sherman, who has rebuffed assistant coach offers from other franchises in the past 10 days, would be a coup for Kubiak as he continues to assemble his first staff.

Sherman, 51, interviewed for head coach vacancies in New Orleans Saints and Buffalo Bills but lost out to Sean Payton and Dick Jauron, respectively, for those positions. He has also been approached in recent days by the New York Jets and Buffalo Bills, in both cases for the offensive coordinator spot, but opted not to pursue those opportunities.

Whether the Texans, and more specifically, Kubiak, can attract his interest remains to be seen. It is believed, however, that Sherman is more intrigued by the Texans job than he was the other assistant coach opportunities that he eschewed.

Dismissed by the Packers the day after the 2005 season concluded, Sherman compiled a 59-43 mark, including playoffs, in six seasons. Green Bay went to the playoffs four times under Sherman, once as a wild card and three times as division champions, but never advanced beyond the divisional round. His 2005 team, which finished 4-12, was decimated by injuries.

Given his strong track record, most league observers were surprised that Sherman did not land one of the head coach spots that became available after the season. It seems that he was victimized by the trend toward hiring first-time head coaches and, perhaps, by the compensation level he enjoyed under his Green Bay contract.

Sherman signed a two-year contract extension last summer that runs through 2007 and is worth $3.2 annually. The Packers are liable for those salaries and, if Sherman takes the job in Houston, his salaries there will be deducted from the amount Green Bay owes him.

There have been no announcements from the Texans regarding assistant coach hires, but it is believed Kubiak has finalized deals with six to seven staffers. One sticking point remains the defensive coordinator position. Kubiak had hoped to hire Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator Richard Smith and Arizona Cardinals linebackers coach Frank Bush as his co-coordinators. The Cardinals, though, denied permission for Bush, who recently signed a new contract in Arizona, to interview for the job.

That would be a big get for that franchise. Sherman seems like the kind of guy that could keep his ego in check and be a useful coordinator to a rookie HC.

I don't know about this. It seems like Sherman's not really interested in a coordinator job. Is his experience a bonus if he's chafing to leave as soon as he gets there? The Texans are a building team that need to establish some continuity. How is David Carr served by bringing in a short timer at OC?

According to the article they aren't even offering him the OC job, but the offensive line coaching spot. Why would he rather take that job over a coordinating job? You rarely see OL coaches end up with a head job.

Apparently he didn't get any HC opportunities and he would be the asst. head coach at Houston which I'm sure is more pay.

Yeah, but if his goal is get another head coaching gig, coordinators are a lot more high profile than an offensive line coach.

I have alot of confidence that Pubes can get them to .500 next year. Sherman would be a big fish in a small pond and help immensely with his experience. Gary was so loyal to this franchise...it's not his fault Reeves exiled him and Shanny in that Maddox fiasco. Doesn't Reeves have the record for SB losses? 3 here and 1 in Atlanta, via the asst. staff and a lame brain Dennis Green.

He's in the right place at the right time and is ready IMO. Houston is a big city, he's home, good owner, QB that he can raise up, they will get Bush...then they spend their draft on OL so Carr will be able to walk in 10 years. That poor guy has been punished more than Elway allready. They have some pieces in play, it just needs some polishing and mostly some OL help. Sherman would be a huge help IMO.

Most of us are pulling for Gary.

Looks like they're planning on slapping the old assistant head coach label onto the title, whatever that means.

It's hard to say. If Humdinger comes here, Pubes could look at Moochie as well...Now he needs to change that stupid name....The Texans? WTF is that?

That's worse than the Armadillos!

The State has two mammals...the Longhorns and the "amusied" Armadillos..

Now doesn't the Houston Longhorns sound better? I suppose they would be called the Houston Steers till they get a few wins.

(BTW you City Slickers....they cut the balls off of males to make them calmer and gain faster)

You should of seen the look Beezer gave me when we got home and he came out of the ether, tried to lick his balls and they were gone...it was hysterical..God he was mad at me...

It keeps them calm and they don't mark and stink up the house. He's still crazy as a loon. BTW, got up to 50f yesterday and Beezer got to go out. No this isn't breaking Bronco news, but he certainly liked it.

First if anyone knows his email...the team needs renamed the Longhorns...not only is it the state large mammal...Festus ruled there with the iron...

Anyone so loyal as Kubiak deserves a bon farwell...he was like a loyal dog...only he didn't get spaded, he has found greener pastures...

Besides, WTF are you worried about, hes in a different conference....We won't meet them next year, that's for sure...

That what pisses me off about Waffle...I name the retard, then he's in the chat room throwing smack.

Give me the nozzle...I could probably get taco to give me the nozzle the I would have to behave...

Having a team or two you like on the other side of the conferences is no shame on loyalty.

The Broncos and vikings have met once in a decade or something...Browner broke Willhites leg,.,. ironic isn't it...

Is that Joey's kid or a nephew or something?

Dolphins lose defensive coordinator

By JASON COLE

jcole@MiamiHerald.com (jcole@MiamiHerald.com)

<!-- begin body-content -->A week after coming up just short of cleaning out his office, Dolphins defensive coordinator Richard Smith left the team to take the same job with the Houston Texans.
The Houston Chronicle reported that Smith will take that post under new coach Gary Kubiak. Smith had been talking with the Texans for more than week after the Dolphins hired former Houston coach Dom Capers to be a special assistant to coach Nick Saban.
Saban declined to comment on the report about Smith leaving.
Capers has an extensive background in the 3-4 defense that the Dolphins run much of the time and is a close friend of Saban for more than 30 years. Smith spent one year with the Dolphins after being hired from Detroit. He shared responsibility of the defense with assistant head coach for defense Will Muschamp.
Smith spent much of the time designing the defensive game plan, and Muschamp called most of the plays, although Saban had tremendous input on the defense. Under the new coaching staff, Saban has not said how the responsibilities for the defense will be divided.

Actually it makes lots of sense. When Kubes had to give calhoun the OC title to get him from Den w/o compensation, I thought that it would put lots of pressure on Kubes to really do the OC and HC jobs since calhoun is no way ready to handle OC duties. Brining in Sherman the same way Den brought in Dinger is a real good move. Both Sherman and Dinger should be candidates for a HC job in the nfl or ncaa in short order, and this way they can groom an OC like calhoun or dennison

It's one thing to "like" a team. You said you couldn't decide between the Broncos and Vikings if they squared off.

Why don't you show up to Mile High and tell that to the hundreds of thousands of loyal fans that stayed true to this franchise even after decades of failure and plenty of SuperBowl humiliations before we got our first.

Yeah, I'm sure all those die hards that cheered the Broncos and John Elway on in those SuperBowls when John carried his team all the way only to be humiliated multiple times, those fans probably just said:

"It's all good, I "like" the Redskins/49ers too so it's cool, one of my teams won anyway."

Or let me guess. It's cool that the Broncos got punked out in the AFC Championship because your "like" Jerome Bettis.

I think I like it better when you post drunk. At least then I wouldn't have the misfortune to understand content.
