BEAVER FALLS, Pa. - A 17-year-old high school student said he was humiliated when a teacher made him sit on the floor during a midterm exam in his ethnicity class — for wearing a Denver Broncos jersey.
The teacher, John Kelly, forced Joshua Vannoy to sit on the floor and take the test Friday — two days before the Pittsburgh Steelers beat the Broncos 34-17 in the AFC championship game. Kelly also made other students throw crumpled up paper at Vannoy, whom he called a “stinking Denver fan,” Vannoy told The Associated Press on Monday.

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. (AP) - A 17-year-old high school student said he was humiliated when a teacher made him sit on the floor during a midterm exam, for wearing a Broncos jersey.
The teacher, John Kelly, forced Joshua Vannoy to sit on the floor and take the test Friday -- two days before the Pittsburgh Steelers beat the Broncos 34-17 in the AFC championship game. Kelly also made other students throw crumpled up paper at Vannoy, whom he called a "stinking Denver fan," Vannoy told The Associated Press on Monday.
The incident occurred in Kelly's ethnicity class. Kelly said Vannoy, a junior at Beaver Area Senior High School, just didn't get the joke.
"If he felt uncomfortable, then that's a lesson; that's what (the class) is designed to do," Kelly told The Denver Post. "It was silly fun. I can't believe he was upset."
Vannoy was wearing a No. 7 Broncos jersey on Friday, because he is a fan of John Elway, the Broncos' retired Hall of Fame quarterback.
Vannoy said he was so unnerved he left at least 20 questions blank on the 60-question test, and just wants out of Kelly's class because he's afraid the teacher won't treat him fairly now that the story reached the media.
"I'm going to have to deal with him for two more nine weeks (school quarters) and he's going to want revenge somehow," Vannoy said Monday. "I took the test. I'm shaking. I'm furious. I didn't know what to do."
Kelly, who wore a Ben Roethlisberger jersey Friday, and his principal, Thomas Karczewski, didn't immediately return messages left on their school voice mail Monday.
Big Beaver Falls Area School District Superintendent Donna Nugent said she was aware of the situation, but said confidentiality rules prevent her from commenting specifically.
"We'll take whatever action we need to in order for the student to feel comfortable," Nugent said.

Unfortunately for me I have to root for the steelers. Anually my friend and I have a bet on the super bowl and he is a fan of the NFC. Every year he has 50 on the NFC and I have 50 on the AFC. I would not mind paying up this year to see the Seahawks bring the Lombardi home.

Your teacher called you out for not following the rules. Not the case with this kid. He was singled out for humiliation for wearing a team jersey that wasn't the teachers favorite team. That's wrong any way you cut it.
For those of you claiming that the kid needs to learn that the world isn't fair, I agree. But, teachers are supposed to be fair and when they're not they need to be called out.
I was the butt of a teachers dislike (never even found out why) and it isn't pretty.

I hope that this kid's parents sue the district. Unfortunately, the only way to get retribution is to hit them in the pocketbook. I'm not sure how a story like this would go over in court, because there isnt a whole lot of precedent I'm sure.
Some of you already know what my opinion of public school teachers is in general. I know that there are good teachers out there that can counter the poor ones, but my foray through public school (in a highly regarded school) included more of the latter than the former. Teachers have become irresponsible and lack foresight. They have allowed themselves to be too much like their students.
My girlfriend is a great teacher. I have seen her in action, and she is very, very good at what she does. She's outstanding and earns the respect of her children's parents. I know that there are great teachers out there, but unfortunately, guys like this socially challenged fellow in the story have become more common than they should be. Some teachers simply dont want to be there and it shows in their work. Maybe this guy just couldnt identify what kind of student that he was dealing with, I dont know him, but he should be fired for that oversight. That kid will never forget that. Those are the types of things that make kids find guns and bring them back into the school.

This reminds me of the "you get what you pay for" adage ... our country doesn't understand that education is an investment ... salaries keeping up with inflation is not a way to entice anyone to go into education. Of course, the moral decline in the United States makes it an even more challenging profession to enter. I'm all for NCLB ... however, in the next three years or so the United States is going to see a teacher shortage like it has never seen in the history of American education ... In my state we've already seen a 20% decline in education majors over the past 4 years and it's getting worse ...

...and that includes daycare teachers....Do you know it's easier for a child up to age five to learn a language than someone who's older...
"You get what you pay for"...do you guys realize that daycare teachers working with children from 0-5 are required to have a Child Development degree or Early childhood Degree...When I was in college we had big classes...enrollment has seriously declined...at 7-8 bucks on the average for a head teacher with experience do we wonder why? It's more money and less responsibility to work at a grocery store or you can make more money waitressing...and not have to deal with parents and disciplining kids. How sad is that?

Yep. The system stinks. Unless you teach in private schools, you dont get your needs met adequately. In private schools, parents have a way of "taking care" of teachers off of the books with other benefits. I know one teacher that was given a late model Lexus by one of her children's parents when they found out her car had broken down and she was taking the bus to school. But if you dont get incentives like that guaranteed, you can go into sales or any number of jobs that you dont need an education for to make the same money with less stress.

I would have no problem with the teacher razzing me for wearing a Bronco jersey, but there's not a chance in hell I would have sat on the floor for anybody. I would have challenged him to come out to the football field for some board drills with me, and then I would have punished his ass.

Um - I don't know this kid but I would have told the teacher to sit his butt on the floor and the other puds to kiss my arse. Kid had more guts to wear his Broncos shirt then any other person in the classroom. Probably a die hard parent....................Yeah Baby!

Heard about this story on MSNBC tonight with that Paul Simon wannabee (nice bowtie retard) saying how the kid should pipe down as he needs these "lessons" in life. Total bullsh!eat ! Had no neck teachers like this in high school. Probably the Varsity FB coach/trying to be a teacher being a jerk. Kid needs to get Bowlen to fly him out next year so he can join our tailgate party. He is a keeper. We need to find his email address.

All you need to know about the teacher is in this sentence from that article . . .
"Kelly had little to say on the subject. "We won the game (Sunday) night, didn't we?" he said. "That's all I was worried about.""
No concern about the student's state of mind.
