...the Broncos lost (hee hee) and the rest of us are spared the oh-so-breathless silliness from the Denver media (TV, newspapers) about the Broncos (which often pushes real news out) and all the hype about the Super Bowl.

We attended the Colorado Indian Market on Sunday and the crowds were considerably thinner than the last few years - the one good thing that comes out of the Broncos. The fanatics leave other more-worthy events less crowded.

I'm a happy man.

W*GS, what turns you off to the Broncos and/or sports? You just not a big sports guy or is it just the Broncos?

The thing that set me off was the corporate welfare scheme known locally as the "Metropolitan Football Stadium District", which is nothing more than a special sales tax that paid for the construction of Invesco Field. Local taxpayers were dinged to the tune of $400 million just so Pat Bowlen would have a new facility in which he could sell $5 hot dogs, $8 beers, and jack up ticket prices, all for his lust for more money. Also, his campaign for the Bowlen Tax (which outspent the opposition more than 10:1) was full of lies and deceptions - and the underlying threat that the Broncos would leave Denver if the tax vote didn't pass. Amazingly, the new Broncos-City of Denver contract doesn't prevent the Broncos from packing up and leaving tomorrow, and its basic terms include much greater revenue for Pat Bowlen from any and all events held at Invesco. Basically, Denver-area taxpayers have subsidized Pat Bowlen to the tune of $400 million, and we get nothing in return. The Broncos' franchise value has also increased dramatically (over $800 million now compared to under $200 million before the Bowlen Tax), and any sale at that value of the Broncos nets us nothing. We've made an incredibly wealthy man far wealthier on the backs of working folks, who have no choice but to pay his tax.

This sort of nonsense has taken place all around the country, including baseball and basketball, and it's simply atrocious.

I could also comment on the corruption of universities by the presence of pro footall's (and pro basketball's) farm league system on their campuses, but that's another discussion.

In short, I find that the major professional sports in the US today aren't worth it in any sense. All we get is a bunch of overpaid prima donnas prancing about in silly costumes, when they're not driving drunk, beating up folks, or otherwise getting their mug shots splashed on the local news for some offense or another.

I feel bad that you can't just enjoy pro sports for entertainment's sake. Of course, it's a business. I know people are becoming rich beyond their wildest dreams. However, we DO get something in return. Sports gives people a diversion from everyday life. We are a group of people tied together with our love for the Broncos. I don't agree with the likes of LABF, Bronco Beerslug and others when it comes to politics, but I would have no problem having a beer with them cheering on the Denver Broncos. To say we get NOTHING in return is false.

Ahhh, but in regards to the Broncos, those of us who live in the MFSD but have no interest in the Broncos at all are still forced to subsidize those who see value in them, to the tune of $400 million.

Imagine if the game-attending fans had to pay that instead...

Would you contend that the City of Denver receives no revenue benefit from having the Broncos? A measure of notoriety that would not otherwise exist?

W*GS

Would you contend that the City of Denver receives no revenue benefit from having the Broncos?

Such a benefit certainly does not net out to be more than $400 million. Entertainment dollars are very substitutable; if the Broncos didn't exist, there are many other sources for entertainment that would get those dollars instead.

If you're talking the Broncos' corporate payroll (not just players), that's so small in terms of the fraction that's spent in the MFSD itself (as opposed to investments and spending outside the MFSD) that in comparison to the $400 million subsidy, it's negligible.

A measure of notoriety that would not otherwise exist?

Denver itself is a 3rd-tier city in the US - a major regional city but not nationally important like NYC, LA, Miami, Seattle, Chicago, etc. Depending on the "range" of Denver's "notoriety", relying on a sports team to advertise one's city is definitely low on the utility scale, especially with an NFL team, as that sport is almost strictly a US one, and outside the US, very very few people pay attention to the NFL.

What about those who travel to Denver on a regular basis for the sole purpose of going to Broncos games? Tax revenue from jobs created by building the stadium? What else in Denver would draw people there? Honestly, I've been to Denver more times than I can count and, with the exception of a handful, I went to see a Broncos game. That's 8 hours each way from Montana that I would have never traveled otherwise thereby minimizing my visits to Denver to the few times I went to see family/friends. That's just me, but there are those that live in Wyoming and other areas coming to Denver to see the Broncos who otherwise would not have come. The team brings people in to experience the city and once they experience Denver they're more likely to come back. Denver was a cow town before the team, a lot of the notoriety the city now enjoys comes from the success of the team. That generated revenue lowers the burden on local tax payers to foot the bill for municipal services. But it would appear your mind is made up so I'll leave it at that.

No one said it was (not me anyway). You assumed, since I pointed out this was indeed a football forum, I was suggesting you shouldn't post here. The point originally was WHY were you posting on a football forum when you don't enjoy the game.

It's your raging hypocrisy that does your beliefs in.
