We've doubled our RAM capacity from 512MB to 1GB. As you can see... It worked.

Muri.
Anyway Taco, when you do have to do another host switch due to current host server limitations, this time, just shut down the board for two days. No more time reversals and no more BS about losing posts. I lost too many good posts in the last two host switches and, you know, I enjoy going back and reading my own brilliance and/or crapulence.

It's setting me back about $130 a month. I have to pay for it in six month increments. Basically, I dropped $800 today, and will have to have another $800 in six months to keep things up and running.
I've decided that *something* needs to be done to offset the server costs. If/when the Seniorita finds out about this, it'll be through the roof alice! I plan on implementing a support system once we get through the season. I had hoped that we'd have enough gas to make it through December, and maybe even into the offseason before we needed to upgrade, but when we have a Wednesday meltdown, it's just not possible. Something had to be done immediately, and I figured that given the feedback I've received from people, I could trust the community to help me out once I get the supporter system up and running. That will come later.
I'll likely have different rewards available for forum supporters. For instance, a yearly drawing for an authentic customized Jersey and maybe even a game ticket for the winner in the $50 dollar level... and on down to other gear at the second and third level. Just something to give thanks for supporting.
Additionally, forum supporters will be able to access a Broncos Fan Only Supporters Forum.
Also, as an aside, I'm working on a couple of other ideas toward the way of growth for the front page. It's difficult to keep momentum using just volunteers. People's lives are too busy to commit themselves without incentive. I want to figure out how to incentivize the staff properly so that we can keep up on things up there and grow the front end of this place into something truly useful. I've got some ideas, but I'd appreciate any others that people might have. I keep a notebook for brainstorming that I review often.

Well, we could hang Taco for no reason and sell his body parts but that would only carry the board for so long and we wouldn't our Fuherur...
We need to take it upon ourselves to help him out. 20 bucks from loyal subects every quarter or so from a couple hundred of us will help him.
I know for a fact that TJ is a humble, religious and good man that doesn't want charity except for others...
But this place isn't a hobby anymore...he's created a monster...hell this is the first time he's ever disclosed his derver cost.
Look, If we just put in a 20 and 500 of us do it, we can put this beast on it's feet.
That would be 2k and carry us thru the next year without any other baloney...bunch of moorons...
Did we give up then the Nazi's bombed Pearl harbor? who's with me AAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRHHHHHHH....
Taco's right...we need to stand up and represent...
I demand a fund raiser. I'm asking, I'm pleading, I'm demanding all to send a token. I suggest a 20 to carry the slackers...The donate now is on the front page...This site is worth a 20 once in awhile. Right?

Count me in to help offset costs. Do you own the server or does your host? That baby should be able to handle more than 1gig ram.
BTW I have 2 Blade Centers so everytime you see IBM run the Blade Comercial with the "Servers Everywhere" Guy & the Blade center guy think of BRONCOSTEVE! & they all have 3g of Ram & boot from SAN.

What's the difference in costs from owning your own server and paid hosting?

Who knows what kind of hardware they are hosting this on. Could be a used PII single or Dual processor system.
Pros & Cons both ways. I am sure it is cheaper for Taco to do it this way than buy the hardware & put it in a Co-lo & rent space (where you can get to it) & get the ISP hookup then have to worry about hardware support also. You just have better control of hardware that way, if you want that!
A lot of ISP co-lo's here in Chicago are almost giving away floor space to internet customers as they are all empty. Our vendor is Cimco & we got a great quote, their Co-lo is a ghost town.
I am old school is all & like hands on. 6 a 1 half a dozen the other...

Celeron! You just gave me a heart attack!
As long as she does what you need her to do I won't knock her. I don't know what their rates are either & not sure it is my business.
You have done a great job keeping her up. Hope the Ram does the trick. If you want unsolicted tips you can ask or PM. I don't want to pound on the foundation of a site I love.

Like I said I aint going to hammer on a foundation of a site I love. You are probably paying all out of pocket which is a shame because we all enjoy it & should be chipping in. Let me know when you have the contribution thing set up & I send in my share. When you have some money to play with & if you want my help let me know & we will go from Yugo to BMW but only after you stop paying for it all yourself.

Once we all chip in some $ so he is not paying for our fun we can get a real box.
Dual PIV Zeon 3.6 or > CPU
2g ram or >
146gig or > raid 5 disk
T1 ISP or >
Or even 2 Cheap servers load balanced at 2 different Co-lo's would help so if one crashed the other would take over.
But all that takes DOUGH & the fact that one guy is shelling out to run this site, & people have the never to bitch about having to consider contributing, just floors me!
Taco is doing a great job, I hope he gets his money & time paid back ten fold one day. (& when he does he doesn't forget about us peons that tried to help)

Dang, that all sounds great. It's a funny thing the way this site has grown. It started with web space on a dial-up account... You know? Like what Earthlink gives you when you sign up for service? We started there. I'm just amazed that we've gotten to this point...
You gotta be proud of your baby TJ. You've raised her well. :) She's moving along quite smoothly this morning.
