After some top notch Patriot fans/Nobel Prize winners in physics petitioned the office of Tagliabue with the following evidence, Tags immediately ordered the game be replayed with the ball spotted at the 20 with the Broncos winning 10-6.

The Pats Physics team also demanded that the 7 points be whiped off the board because of the pass interference call, but was turned down.

What is missed is that Champ made it a curve ball AROUND the pylon. Seriously, what this doesn't take into account is momentum. He's running, the the ball is going to have momentum. In other words, it's going to continue travelling forward after the fumble. It's a gross assumption of neglect to assume it was a static object when it occured. It wasn't. The ball wouldn't of traveled in a perfectly straight line at all.

I tried to look at it objectively, and altho it was incredibly close, it was clear by a couple inches.

I also think that Bailey got hit so hard, and had the ball curled so tightly in his hand, that it resulted in the ball being flung directly sideways, or more sideways than one would expect.

A few obvious problems.

1. Camera angle off-set. Both a vertical angle off-set (not directly over the ball) and horizontal off-set (not lined up straight to the sideline). The "geometry" (if you want to call it that) shown here doesn't take any of that into account.

Easier breakdown here:

the top of the orange square that can be seen in the bottom right hand side of this picture can be seen in the below photo, clearly a yard before the pylon.

http://www.umit.maine.edu/%7EDerek_Bouchard/champ1.jpg

here we see Champ, Watson, and the ball all clearly out of bounds, just reaching the pylon.

Watson had knocked the ball free at the 1 yard line, all three were out of bounds upon reaching the pylon. Clearly the continued bitching about this is laughable. If you want to extrapolate physics data from this you can consider the vectors effecting the location of the ball. Vector 1: Champ's forward motion. Vector 2: Watson's tackle, a roughly perpendicular force out of bounds along with inreased forward momentum. Neither of these would slow the ball relative to the two players, and last I checked the friction of air isn't increased when dealing with footballs near the endzone in Pats games. In the second photo Champ's left foot is the only part of him left in bounds, and just barely. He's been displaced about 5 feet out of bounds before reaching the pylon and that is with him physical resisting it. The ball can't do that, and preceded both players out of bounds.

The PI on Samuel I can see people bitching about, it was pretty ticky tack crap but by the rules of the game Samuel intentionally moved to obstruct Lelie's path, that whole "playing the ball" thing is bull**** since the ball wasn't remotely within playable range when he initiated contact with Lelie by stepping in front of him and slowing up. Its the same crap the Pats got away with for their previous SB runs, but the new PI rules specifical state that to be illegal, largley because of the Pats exploitation of the old incidental contact rules with this very tactic.

In some angles it looks like a touchback, but one final angle clearly shows it was barely still in the field. Fergy should of looked over his right shoulder to see Ben Watson barrelling down. That was an amazing play by Watson. Not only did he run about 100 yards downfield, he came across the field as well!, and it's not like Champ is Leon Lett. He did let up tho. Ben Watson came out of nowhere. Amazing play. Every time I see him chase Champ down I simply can't believe it.

O my goodness. I love this thread. This is my kind of thread. Good job Drek. The second one I can show to my complaining friends.

Whatever the call, the bottom line is the better team won on Sunday. If Tom didn't throw an interception, then the rest of this is more moot than it already is.

Our stampede boy had a killer seat in the background, we can ask him to clear this up.

That picture with the drummer looks like a good candidate for a "caption this"

Great pic.

How is this thread funny? And Turner went to the 9ers?

Enough already...
