TEXAS TWO-STEP
One team that has no certainty surrounding its next head coach is the Houston Texans. Broncos offensive coordinator Gary Kubiak is going to get the job, and he's going to get it shortly after Denver's season ends -- whenever that is.

After many seasons with Denver, Gary Kubiak might return home in a big way.
If the Broncos lose to New England on Jan. 14, Kubiak would become the Texans head coach early next week. If the Broncos advance to the AFC championship game, Kubiak's hiring would have to wait at least another week. And so on and so forth, until Denver loses.

Whenever it is, it is going to be a grand day for Kubiak and the Texans. Kubiak will get to return to the city where he grew up, and the Texans will be getting one of football's top offensive minds.

Once Kubiak goes, don't be surprised if he tries to lure Broncos offensive line coach Rick Dennison with him. Kubiak and Dennison are extremely close, and Kubiak might want Dennison to serve as his offensive coordinator. If the two coaches go to Houston together, Denver's running game could take a major whack next season.

Any thoughts?

I'd hate to lose Dennison but I would feel fairly comfortable in who ever Shanny chose to replace Kubs and Dennison.

You would think Dennison would show some loyalty to Shanny and the Broncos after all they have done for his career.

The Texans are still interviewing and brought back Al Saunders for a second interview. I think Kubiak is going to be the choice but I also think he is not going to be the one picking his assistants.

Keep in mind that the Texans *only* fired the head coach, the OC and the DC - not the other assistants. Guys like WR coach Kippy Brown, DB coach Jon Hoke and ST coach Tony Marciano are still there.

Is Herm going to clean house and name his own assistants? I think so given the way they negotiated Herm's way out of New York. I think he has the leverage to say "I hire the assistants I want".

So the second interview on Saunders *may* be to hire him as Kubiak's OC, a wise choice since Saunders has some (brief) HC experience and Kubes does not plus Saunders can implement Reggie Bush into an offense like he did Dante Hall whereas Kubiak has never had to design an offense around such a player - in Denver, it was all the system. They may be doing the same in courting Jerry Gray (Buffalo's DC) as their new DC.

All speculation, of course, but it makes sense.

Not surprising...It's kind of traditional that when a coordiantor leaves to become a HC he takes some of the staff with him (especially for as long as Kubes has been with Denver), usually giving them promotions... I'm betting we'll see 3 or 4 at least be offered the chance to go to Houston... kind of customary.

Usually you have control of you staff... you may not make player personal decisions... I wouldn't touch the job if I was Kubes if he didn't have control of hiring staff... and I bet Shanahan would advise him of that... since he was burned by lack of control when with Al Davis... and Shanny seems to suport Kubes going to Houston.

Saunders is Al Davisī choice it seems. Some guy on RF.net who apparently is pretty well informed broke that story.

I mentioned this as well about losing some of our other coaches as well if he leaves. Hopefully not but I don't see not happening.

so if someone offered you a promotion and more money, you'd stick with your current job out of loyalty?

Yes, I saw Saunders linked to the Raiders job this morning.

I feared this would happen if Kubes goes. I think a lot of people thought we would suffer when Gibbs left, i think we will be fine yet again.
