Trying to set up a D-link router with password protection for our house. I've noticed my DSL activity light going quite a bit over the past few months when my connection is inactive. In other words, I think someone may be helping themselves to my connection... not good.

Anyone happen to be running a D-link DI-514? I've done quite a bit of research, but not much luck figuring out what we're trying to do. To compound the problem a bit... our house is pretty big, so we're running a booster. (Accelerator)

Any ideas on getting this thing secured? I'd like to stay away from just registering the machines in the house, because sometimes people bring in laptops and I'd like them to be able to connect with our password.

Are you using a software firewall also? Easy enough to check the logs if you are.

do you have WEP enabled?

We had it enabled, but ran into some problems. Looks like you can add PW protection there, but it kept killing our signals. It showed connected, but no data transfer.

I'm not running a software firewall as of yet. That protects your files, but will it keep people from being able to access (and log onto) your signal?

why not just make it so it ties to your MAC addressess?

That's what I did also. MAC spoofing is a lot harder to crack than passwords. Whatever you do, make sure you do it quick, all your neighbors could be surfing with your connection!
