CINCINNATI -- The Cincinnati Bengals reworked and extended Carson Palmer's contract on Thursday, giving themselves more salary cap flexibility and a chance to keep their franchise quarterback through 2014.

By adding six years to a deal that could pay him $118.75 million, they also showed they're serious about winning for years to come. The Bengals have won the AFC North title and are preparing for their first playoff appearance in 15 years.

"We've knocked down another one of those walls," coach Marvin Lewis said.

Palmer won the Heisman Trophy at Southern California and was the first overall pick in 2003. His current contract had three more years.

The Bengals approached Palmer's agent, David Dunn, about an extension a few months ago, indicating they wanted to keep him for the rest of his career. In only his second season as a starter, Palmer has led his team to the playoffs, set a franchise record for touchdown passes and made the Pro Bowl.

Palmer hopes his extension convinces some of his teammates to stay as well. Pro Bowl receiver Chad Johnson has talked about staying in Cincinnati long-term to set records with Palmer.

"The future's very exciting," Palmer said. "The Bengals are doing a phenomenal job of building a team for the future."

Palmer signed with the Bengals two days before the 2003 draft, a break from the franchise's history of squabbling with top draft picks over money. His deal included a $10.01 million signing bonus and a $4.01 million roster bonus he got earlier this year.

Palmer's contract paid him $18.25 million in bonuses and salary for his first three years, and included escalators that would have brought his total to well over $40 million over six years.

Under the reworked deal, Palmer will get a $15 million bonus on Dec. 31 and a base salary of $6.75 million next year. The Bengals owe him a $9 million option by Jan. 1, 2007; they'll have the option of letting the rest of the deal take effect or nullifying it at that time, but have to pay the same amount either way.

His base salaries will increase over the final eight years on the deal, topping out at $14 million in 2014. He'll also get $1 million roster bonuses for each of his last three seasons, bringing the total amount of the reworked nine-year deal to $118.75 million.

The guy is uber rich!

-----------------------------------------

Palmer will be paid $118.75 million over the next nine years.

Athletes First, Palmer’s agency, is calling the deal the biggest in NFL history – bigger than those signed by quarterbacks Peyton Manning of the Colts (seven years, $98 million) and Michael Vick of the Falcons (nine years, $110 million).

Under terms of the new deal, Palmer will be paid a $15 million roster bonus if he is on the roster Dec. 31. The bonus will be paid Feb. 16.

Because the deal was completed before the end of the 2005 season, the Bengals can prorate the $15 million roster bonus over the next five years.

Palmer will be paid a $9 million option bonus before Jan. 1, 2007.

With a $6.75 million base salary, the contract’s value for 2006 alone is $30.75 million.

The deal “flattens” out from 2007 through 2011 with base salaries of $7.25 million, $7.75 million, $9.5 million, $10.5 million and $11.5 million.

Palmer’s salary cap number in 2007 will be a relatively manageable $7.25 million, which leaves space for new contracts for other players.

With the ability to prorate the $15 million roster bonus over the next five years – or absorb Palmer’s roster bonus in its entirety in 2006 – the Bengals have room to re-sign their offensive linemen.

This is why you can't acquire a franchise QB through free agency. They get locked up faster than Courtney Love.

Good for them. I was talking to a Bengals fan at work yesterday. He's been a Bengals fan his whole life. Hardcore. He named all these old players I never heard of, and talked about how he's kind of pissed that the "new fans" are so stupid and don't appreciate.

I told him that while I thought they were too young to win it all this year, I felt that they had the tools to be an elite team for many years. I also told him how refreshing it is to hear about team that doesn't have someone named Manning, Brady, Owens, or Vick on the team.

He did mention that the last time the bengals went to the Superbowl they had a similar record to their current one and they played in Detroit. Too bad we're better. :strong:

I almost feel bad for the guy. Cincinnati is a dump, but I'm sure the 118 mil makes it a lot nicer...

Personally, I think this is terrible news...... this move continues to solidify a rising, potential threat for years to come unless Brown meddles in his team's development. IMO, it's in the Broncos best interests to see Cincy fall apart ASAP.

Not a bad sum of money for being able to toss it to #85 all year.

I think its great to see them come out of their slumber. It will be tough on us for sure, but it puts the onus on shanny and co. to coninually improve and never be satisifed.

While that is true...I still find it hard to applaud a team that has all the makings and potential to become Indy II. Seeing enemy teams get stronger is not something I enjoy.

I agree 100 percent. This kid is real good. We might as well keep adding the appropriate pieces to make our defense stronger and stronger.

Hopefully now with Carson Palmers contract, the Bengals wont have the money to sign this guy back, and he becomes a Denver Bronco:

The Cardinals might pull themselves out of the cellar then, Boldin, Fitzgerald, and #85 would be just downright scary.

Not for more than a year or two......remember Bidwell owns that team and much like Brown in Cinncy, he's a total disgrace as an owner.

That's my lone hope for stopping the rise of the Bengals.....Brown meddling and bringing the whole thing down, which is a very good possibility when you think about it.

Brown thanks Bidwell everyday, because there is a worse owner out there than him(the Fords are making their way up the list as well.)

Plus Boldin is about to jet, so the Cardinals major rise to a nearly decent team will soon end.

OTOH, Irsay is an azz of an owner as well and yet, the Colts have maintained...frankly, I'm very surprised by that.

He signed an extension and will be in AZ for a few years although he seems like the type to get pissed and request a trade.

i was going to fix that too.;D

Boldin will be around here in AZ for awhile imo. If they score on their drives they are a dangerous team. Problem is, they dont have a running game and in the redzone you cant just pass the ball every down.

They did that experiment in Detroit and it didn't work.

In conclusion, they still need a QB.

It would be 3 solid WR tho. And they all do their own specialty. Warner aint a slouch, and even Mccown get get them the ball

What experiment in Detroit?

Roy Williams is solid, Mike Williams is still a rookie who hasnt played in a year, and Charles Rogers is always hurt or suspended.

Arizona would have 3 solid, PROVEN wide receivers, not a rookie, 1 good receiver, and a guy on IR.

Boldin signed an extension so he won't be leaving. Green knows he needs an o-line and a RB so I would look for them to bolster those positions. The Bengals are about to become the next colts with Rudi (or Perry for that matter), TJ Housh (really underrated), Chad Johnson, and Carson Palmer. They are going to be good on offense for years to come.
