View Full Version : Somebody explain to me the playoff system here...

So, I read that for KC to enter the playoffs, they need both Pittsburgh and San Diego to lose. However, isn't SD officially totally eliminated from the playoffs?

If so, here's my question: If SD is totally eliminated, what difference does it make to the Chiefs if they win or lose? Obviously, there's a tiebreaker thing in there somewhere, but still, doesn't that sound a little odd to anybody?

Anyways, if anybody has an answer it'd be appreciated.

Yes, SD is totally toast.

Pittsburgh or Kansas City will get the final spot in the AFC. The Steelers are in the driver's seat and can clinch with a victory next week at home against Detroit.

The Chiefs lose a two team tiebreaker with the Steelers but actually win in a three team tiebreaker that includes the Chargers.

It has something to do with pittsburg holding the tie breaker over san diego (head to head) and san diego holding the tie breaker over KC. So if they all end up with the same record pittsburg goes.

Here's the simple explanation.

Pittsburg would have to start the waterboys against the Lions not to make the playoffs, end of story Ha!

I spent like three hours doing calculating this solution. It's probably the best playoff system I've ever done.

The waterboys would probably be a 3 point favorite in that one.

You've got that mixed up RMT. The Chefs would win a two team tiebreaker because they have a better conference record. They lose a three team tiebreaker because the tie is first broken between the two teams from the same division. Sandy would get the tiebreaker over KC, but Pitts would go because they have the tiebreaker over Sandy (H2H). Thus, KC needs Denver to win to avoid the three team tiebreaker if Pitts would lose and KC would win.

See there's the chick angle. KC is asking whether he's gonna get laid (go to the playoffs.) The chick (the league) is giving him the totally confusing line about relationships and who's going with whom and what she likes about him, and what she doesn't. But the bottom line is KC knows he's going home in the camaro to the single wide with tires on the roof and watching porn.

Easy as this, KC wont make the playoffs. Scenarios are confusing, but Steelers play the Lions, nuff said there.

Frustrating...a possible 10-6 team not going to the playoffs...but they had their chances...

The game at Arrowhead Sunday will be an interesting one for sure.

Could be interesting.... If Pitt wins or SD wins, it wont be very interesting IMO.

But i agree, this year i thought we would be a division winner with a 10-6 record, boy was i wrong.

I ts not December anymore on Sunday so the Bungles do have a shot.:rainbow:

Get over it. You lost to Buffalo and look pathetic doing it. Your QB that you all slobber over turned the game around with that stupid fumble after your woman beating RB couldn't handle a block. Then you morons couldn't tackle Tiki Barber and he alone made the Chiefs look like a pop warner team out there and you want to talk about frustrating cause they can't make the playoffs? Give me a friggin break......

This team is not an elite team right now...I don't know what you read from my post that made you frame it like I was whining.

I said it outright...they had the chances. And missed them.

Having said that it is still frustrating if your team is 10-6...can play good ball against good teams and miss out. I am curious as to what is so ridiculous about that.

They gotta know that a win secures #3 and a loss is almost surely #4. So who do they wanna play more is the question. NFL in the playoffs is all about matchups so who do the Bungles choose. Jags, or Steelers?? I gotta assume that they would rather face the jags. But how do you go to your team and say, "hey, lets lose today" Gotta be awkward, especially with a bunch of young guys.

I couldn't bring myself to do that as a coach or player...

thats what im saying. I know vets know that winning is important, but sometimes, losing can help (Just sounds odd).

I would let the guys know subtely if i was a coach.

"Alright men, lets go out their and win, but dont worry about a loss, now lets DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Ha, I could imagine trying to be in the frame of mind to do it but at the end of the day for those guys in the trenches it is you against those men across from you. How do you not give your all?

I agree. But if its a team full of vets, i bet they would lay down for the better of the team. Like i said the bengals are still young and believe they can beat anyone (which they prob can), so they wont not try.

One post already sort of answered this correctly but I thought I would add something for clarity.

Anytime there are two or more teams from the same division in a tie then divisional tie breakers will apply to them first until only one team from the division remains. This is obvious when it's only those teams. But, when you have teams from multiple divisions, while it's less obvious, the approach still applies. So, before ties are broken between teams from other divisions there will only be one team left from each division.

So - if Chiefs, Chargers win and Steelers lose then all three teams are tied at 10-6. However, since Chiefs and Chargers are in the same division, tie breakers between them apply first. Basically, Steelers get to sit out of the tie breaker scenario until only one team is left from AFC West. San Diego has the tie breaker against the Chiefs (#3 tie breaker - Common opponnets). So, San Diego survives that round only to then be pitted against the Steelers (okay pun intneded) where it loses via tie breaker #1 since it lost head to head.

Here is how it works.

Some teams make it.

The Patriots beat them.

Patriots win the Superbowl.

really simple if you break it down to it's primitive form and ultimate end result.
