New NBC Drama Show Mocks Christianity
Email NBC Chairman Bob Wright over NBC's latest show, "The Book of Daniel."
NBC is touting the network's mid-season replacement series "The Book of Daniel" with language that implies it is a serious drama about Christian people and Christian faith. The main character is Daniel Webster, a drug-addicted Episcopal priest whose wife depends heavily on her mid-day martinis.

Webster regularly sees and talks with a very unconventional white-robed, bearded Jesus. The Webster family is rounded out by a 23-year-old homosexual Republican son, a 16-year-old daughter who is a drug dealer, and a 16-year-old adopted son who is having sex with the bishop's daughter.

At the office, his lesbian secretary is sleeping with his sister-in-law.

Network hype – and the mainstream media – call it "edgy," "challenging" and "courageous." The hour-long limited drama series will debut January 6 with back-to-back episodes and will air on Friday nights. The writer for the series is a practicing homosexual.

The homosexual son will be network prime-time's only regular male homosexual character in a drama series.

"Those at NBC responsible for this program consider it a good, religiously oriented show typical of Christian families" is a slap in the face and they have every right to be pissed. Funny how NBC dictates what a typical Christian family is.

And just another reason why I don't watch anything but sports, the occasional news, or Lost anymore.

who gives a damn if he is gay or not ? he can write a story about Jesus being Gay,with Big afro , and did the Limbo and wearing bling bling.......Free speech , But now providing a Platform where this story can be told is a different matter ........ Now if HBO , Showtime , etc .Showed it ,fine , dont pay for their services ,but NBC is on public air ways , awhole different matter ..........

The point that NBC purposesly picked him because he was gay to further piss off the right.

Like instead of just making a movie about gay cowboys from Utah they decided to use Cheyenne because they knew it would piss you off more.

you cant make it clear , cause you have no reasonable defense of them pointing out if the writter is gay or not ..........doesnt matter if he is gay or not ,the script is junk its intent is obvious , a hetrosexual man could have wrote the same script ...........

To the right yes it does because it is a homosexual trying to dictate what is a typical christian family. Like a city slicker trying to explain what a cowboy is or what a person who has never driven a truck/car etc trying to explain the typical trucker.

Here is an excerpt from an interview with the writer....

"I recognize there are going to be people who have an issue with a gay man writing about Jesus," Kenny says at the Television Critics Association's summer press tour. He adds, "I'm not making fun of Jesus. I never want to poke fun at religion or at Jesus. These characters are very spiritual people. They believe in God, they believe in Christ as their savior, and I think that's wonderful."

While his characters are devout, Kenny's own feelings toward Christ and organized religion are more complicated. He is, as he puts it, "in Catholic recovery," is interested in Buddhist teachings about reincarnation, and isn't sure exactly how he defines God and/or Jesus.

"I'm a spiritual person," he says. "I don't know specifically what's going on up there. I think there must be something going on, whether it's an energy we're all connected to or an old white man with a beard and a robe.

"I do believe in Jesus. I don't necessarily know that all the myth surrounding him is true, but I read his teachings, and I think he was a great teacher and a wonderful philosopher. I think he had a great idea: `Love thy neighbor.' There's nothing wrong with that."

Kenny's mother was Cuban and his father Irish Catholic, and they had different commitments to the church. Kenny remembers watching his mother receive Communion while his father, weary from a childhood of daily Mass, would stand outside smoking a cigarette. In his teens, Kenny found himself drifting from the church, a process accelerated by the growing realization he was gay.

"Once I got into college, I didn't go anymore," he recalls. "The Catholic Church is very obviously not accepting of homosexuals, so if they're not going to want me in their doors, I don't want to bother them with it."

Twenty-three years ago, he began a relationship with Michael Goodell, who remains his partner to this day. Kenny was fascinated by Goodell's contradictory family: emotionally closed-off Republicans who were also socially liberal and welcoming to him. He became just as fascinated by their participation in the Episcopal Church, which he found more liberal and tolerant than Catholicism.

Daniel's family was very loosely inspired by Goodell's--"None of them are addicted to Vicodin, but there is a lot of behavior that is exciting to me in that world"--and he has studied them closely to get the Websters' interactions just right.

"This is a real good definition of Episcopalian: Michael once said to his mother, `God bless you, Mommy,' and she said, `We don't say that. We don't proselytize. Just keep that to yourself. Order another martini and keep it quiet. Don't run around blessing everybody."

Yet another reason the major networks are losing audience. The whole thing just sounds so incredibly stupid.

I'll stick with Discovery Channel, A&E, TLC, Bravo, AMC, TCM and a couple of others. Better still, rent a movie, or best yet, read a book.

I wonder if anyone at AFA even viewed the show, before they reacted. There are a lot of shows/books/plays that don't sound as very good ideas that turn out to be well done and very entertaining. If the show is no good, people won't watch it and it will be pulled, that the nice thing about living in free market society.

http://www.cnn.com/2006/SHOWBIZ/TV/01/05/television.daniel.reut/index.html

The network stands by the series, according to Vivi Zigler, executive vp current programming at NBC Entertainment, who cautioned not to judge the series on the basis of promotions for the show.

"People are reacting based on not having seen it," she said. "They're seeing the advertising, not seeing what the core of the show is."

Then you need to fire your promotions people for doing a horrible job. If you alienate x% of your regular viewing audience how is that good for business?
