View Full Version : Niners Vs Texans: The Bush Bowl

The 3-12 San Francisco 49ers host the 2-13 Houston Texans in a matchup that might well determine where Reggie Bush begins his NFL career. http://www.signonsandiego.com/uniontrib/20041210/images/2004-12-10reggiebush.jpg
Houston can clinch the worst record simply by losing, but the 49ers have been equally awful this season, despite their slightly better record. They swept the Rams for two of their three wins and squeaked out a 15-10 win over Tampa Bay in Chris Simms first start of the season. Despite a terribly disorganized front office and a lack of talent on offense, the Niners seem to play pretty hard every week, especially on defense.
The Texans are probably playing as well as they have all season. They beat Arizona two weeks ago and three of their last four losses have been by narrow margins. Their only other victory came against the 5-10 Cleveland Browns. They seem to be playing hard down the stretch, but offensive woes continue to plague them. With a couple good backs on the roster already and a horrendous offensive line, many people think Houston would be better off losing this game and dropping a couple spots so they can draft D'Brickashaw Ferguson. http://media.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/photo/2005/08/29/PH2005082901670.jpg
Also in the running for Bush:
The 3-12 Saints, who should get flattened in Tampa Bay.
The 3-12 Packers, who host a Seattle team that will likely rest some starters.
The 3-11 Jets who should get beaten tonight at home by New England. They finish the season at home against a 5-10 Buffalo Bills squad.
With consolation prizes like Ferguson, Matt Leinart, Vince Young and DeAngelo Williams available, there has never been a better time to draft in the top five. This is possibly the strongest top five in 17 years.
The top five in 1989:
Troy Aikman
Tony Mandarich
Barry Sanders
Derrick Thomas
Deion Sanders
The 2006 Draft promises to be much deeper than the class of 1989, though. The only other truly great player to come out of the first round that year was a big defensive back out of Arkansas named Steve Atwater. http://www.sportsecyclopedia.com/nfl/denver/AtwaterDen.jpg

Nice post!
I guess I didn't quite realise how MANY teams really suck this year.
bonus for them is the draft is heavy....:vermeil:

Jets will draft Leinart if he is their. Bank on that.
Bush i s gonna be great, Niners and TExans have good backs, so will they go for greatness, or trade and actually improve their team??

I feel bad for whoever winds up in San Francisco. If I'm coming into the League next year, I would rather spend my rookie year as a New Orleans Vagabond.

I wonder if they can afford to commit Top 5 money to yet another QB with Pennington there, especially as Leinart is similar to Pennington (questionable arm strength, questionable mobility - a risky mix). Martin is getting up there in age, so I wonder if it wouldnīt be wiser to draft a RB like DeAngelo.

Actually, I was informed earlier in the year(after the USC vs. ND game) that Dengelo Williams will be drafted ahead of Reggie Bush.
That user is to remain anonymous, but that was a bad argument.

Edwards said earlier that they were not going to take a QB in the first round of this years draft. They want to give Pennington every chance to be the franchise QB in NY (aka we don't have the cap room and we don't want a Rivers/Brees fiasco as they do in SD).

If I were them I would take Leinart and do everything possible to lay the ground work to recoup Pennington's signing bonus money that was spent from the insurance policy they certainly had in place.
I think Leinart will be a very good NFL QB but besides that it would be a huge marketing coup to get the LA Golden Boy in the Big Rotten Apple's hype machine.

so wait, if houston wins and the saints lose, then doesn't new orleans get #1 overall due to them having the weakest schedule?

Maybe you can clarify this point. Is the tie breaker derived from the worst strength of schedule going into the season, or the worst strength of schedule achieved by opponents during the current season?

it's based on the schedule you played this season. Right now the saints have the weakest schedule at .522---this includes future opponents too, so Houston and sf's .541 won't dip when they meet each other next week.
the Jets have .522 too, so i'm not sure how it works if them and the saints have an even schedule. I guess it'd clear matters up if miami beats NE.
clarifying: it's based on how teams performed this year.

Houston will draft Bush and I will then throw up. Reeves takes over in Houston and schemes Bush by running trap plays up the middle trying to play him like Gibbs is playing Portis. Eventually Nush isn't cutting it averaging 2 yards per carry and they ask him to gain weight believing that will solve the problem. By his fourth year he is ruled a bust and waived. Mike Shanahan picks him up for the vet minimum and asks him to lose 20 lbs. You know the rest...Ha!
Honestly they'll take Bush and not get any O-line help and nothing will change. I hate bad teams that take talent and use it wrong. :pfbbt:

Also, A.J. Hawk will be a top 5 pick, probably dropping DeAngelo out, unless Vince Young stays true to his word that he's coming back for his senior year, then I can see all 5 be the first to have their new teams.

I'd like to see Bush join his high school teamate Alex Smith in San Francisco and the Texans need O-linemen. If they get the first pick they ought to trade down for extra picks.

I just posted this in another thread. Apparently the Jets are enamored with Leinart.
The fact is, there are strong indications that the Jets aren't high on Leinart, fearing that he could be a weak-armed, injury-prone clone of Chad Pennington. After losing two quarterbacks to season-ending injuries this season, the team is not eager to invite a scenario that could result in a repeat.

The Texans need an OLine a lot more than a RB. They are terrible and have no depth.
I don't know why Kubiak would be willing to become the head coach of a team that's 3 or 4 years away from being a playoff contender. Houston has some serious issues.

Actually RMT, I agree with you. I think Houston will trade down for a couple picks because RB is not really an issue for them. They have Davis and Morency. I think if anyone has the cards to deal with Houston we do, but we won't(Not that we should). I've really heard that Kubiak wants a head coaching job so if they offer him Houston I'm guessing he'd take it. I mean... If he turns them around he's a genius and automatically up for head coach of the year. If he doesn't... Then well it's because the Texans and the Texans and he could probably come back to the broncos. He's really in a win win situation if you ask me.

I have strange feeling that Wade Phillps will be the head coach and Reeves the VP of Operations. Best thing that could happened to them today would have been to win the game, so there wouldn't be pressure to pick Bush, and they could have picked LT.
