Don't know if this has been posted but I couldn't stop laughing
From ESPN Mark Clayton

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/columns/story?columnist=clayton_john&page=/firstandten/week16

For the Kansas City Chiefs, Saturday's game against the Chargers is more than a game. It could end a short era.

The Dick Vermeil portion of the Chiefs' history could be coming to an end. He's 69, but his mind and body are young. Vermeil wants to give Lamar Hunt and team president and close friend Carl Peterson a trip to the Super Bowl. Although Vermeil hasn't made a decision, it's unlikely he will return if he can't get this team into the playoffs.

As he's finding, the AFC road to the Super Bowl is much together than the road he took through the NFC with the Rams in 1999. The AFC has more established and elite quarterbacks. During Vermeil's time in Kansas City, the Patriots emerged as a three-time Super Bowl champion that was going to be hard for anyone to stop. Ask the Colts, who tried and failed. Now, it could be the Colts' time.

Barring a drastic turn of events, Vermeil will probably head into retirement after the season.Vermeil loves pro football and the game loves him. So does his team. Hunt, Peterson and the players would love to see Vermeil return. But Vermeil is a realist. The team is getting old. Despite having three Pro Bowlers on the offensive line, Vermeil experienced how tough it is for Willie Roaf and others to bounce back from injuries. As he said during the preseason, if he can't get this team to the Super Bowl, he might move aside for a younger person.

At 8-6, the Chiefs are in a tough spot, and even a victory over the Chargers might not help. The late-season schedule has been brutal for the Chiefs, who have faced nothing but playoff teams. The good news for Vermeil is they finish the season with two home games: Saturday against the Chargers and next week against the Bengals. The problem is, even if the Chiefs win those two games, their wild-card bid is all but over if San Diego beats the Broncos next week. The Chargers would get the spot based on the common opponent tiebreaker. The Chiefs would need the Jaguars and Steelers to collapse in the last two weeks.

The Chargers also are scrambling. Everyone acknowledges this might be one of the most talented teams to ever miss the playoffs, and the Chargers don't want that distinction. Their schedule has been brutal. If the Dolphins finish with a winning record, the Chargers would end up facing 11 teams with winning records. If the Jaguars win out and finish 12-4 and the Steelers beat two teams with losing records -- Cleveland and Detroit -- the Chargers could become the first 11-win team in 20 years to miss the playoffs.

As with most top AFC West matchups, the home team usually prevails. The Chargers manhandled the Chiefs at home in October in a game that wasn't as close as the final score, 28-20. And the Chargers snapped a seven-game losing streak in Arrowhead by pulling out a 34-31 victory last season, giving them a three-game overall winning streak against K.C.

Vermeil has been consistent. He doesn't lose December games in Arrowhead. Even including last year's loss to San Diego, the Chiefs have outscored the Chargers 232-107 in the past eight games in Arrowhead.

This game figures to be high scoring. Both teams have potent offenses. Both teams are desperate and will try anything to win. Both teams are creative and well coached. It should be a classic

So the Phil Donahue saga ends in Mulletville.Yet another dismal failure under the Queen Karla regime. The 5 year errrrrrrr 16 year plan isn't any closer to fruition than when Mr. Hunt hired that fraud at GM.

The Steve Sabol PR machine will get Dick Vermeil into the Hall of Fame.

Mark my words.

There is no way he deserves it, but the PR machine from Mt Laurel, New Jersey, is almighty powerful.

NFL Films will help get Vermeil inducted.

B-Love, out of curiosity, why dont you like Steve Sabol?

And why do you think he has that much influence considering he is on record stating Rich Tombstone Jackson is the best player NOT in the Hall of Fame?

If he has that much pull, why isnt Jackson in the hall?

They made one cover story on Tombstone then incorporated it into Orange Sunday I think. They show the thing on reruns Sabol says that about other players as well. I give him credit for telling NFL history but sure wish they would gather some old AFL Footage. I would like to see some 1960 era footage of AFL prior to Merger regardless of quality.

I was serious. Mock are you saying that Vermin-eel is a HOF caliber coach? & why the reference to Stram? He is already in & deserves the nod for the work he did with the Cheefs prior to the NFL AFL Merger.

Article in today's Post suggests that Haslett form NO will likely be a candidate to replace Varmint. That is, if Haslett leaves NO which may be a possibility.

That team has lost the Window of Opportunity because Petersen doen't know how to keep his team fresh with new talent. Several years of mediocre drafting has them in a pickle now. Not that that is a bad thing, of course. The issues there cannot be solved with a couple of FA pickups. They will need development time. The D is still suspect. The Oline is going to fall apart. We'll see what LJ can do behind a mediocre line if he stays there.

I hope they remain "under development" for several years.

My favorite part of Vermeil were his press conferences where he would make excuses and then say "that's no excuse." You could count on them after every loss. He always makes excuses to inoculate himself and his players against criticism, and then after he's done excusing poor play, he says "that's no excuse" like that band-aids that he's soft of person. After the loss at home to Philly, he said "well we won at Oakland so it all balances out." What is that supposed to mean? That you were planning on losing those games? Who plans to lose games?

His style of coaching has made his team mentally soft. They lose and he gives them time off. They whine, and they get their way. I'm sure their is loyalty, but that's all I've seem him win over in KC.

I think he said awhile ago he was pissed because Sabol has control over NFL films and that he won't ever play any of the old games on the NFL network. He guards those games like they were his own personal stash.

There is no reason why they cannot replay some old games from the past. I would love to see Unitas play a full game no matter the opponet. How can I tell if Elway was the greatest if all I can remember of Unitas is the guy with the rag arm? They could get bigh time sponsorship for it I am sure. Anyway it would make me tune into the NFL network. I hardly watch that channel as it is.

I wasn't questioning you, P. It was more of a "you've got to be kidding me" comment about the content of the article itself.

Let's see, Slap now has Millen as GM and Haslett as coach in KC. Now if the fade will keep Norv, and maybe bring in Donoho as GM, the West will be down to two teams. GM in SD is strong. The coach is solid up until crunch time, then soils his pants. I like the way things are shaping up here.
