the former raider apparently was a passenger in a car that was driving recklessly in LA this morning. The driver was killed too, no link yet, just saw it on KCAL.

sad news, he went to my high school and from everything I heard he was a great, smart kid until the money/fame/drugs got to him.

That sucks for him and his family

I remember he played good for a couple years for the duhs, but like aborquez said, drugs and money and fame got to him

I remember most Raider fans assumed we'd try to sign him after his drug suspension was up a few years ago

Happened just after 6am, somehow I feel that they were not racing to get to work on time. Hope no innocent bystanders were injured.

It is a shame that he & who ever he was with never got the chance to turn their lifes around.

Life is short, make the best of it for yourself & your loved ones.

Saint Augustine High. Russell really worked hard at USC to move himself to the top of the draft board in 1997. Bill Parcells thought hard about taking him with the 2nd overall pick. You're right, he was a smart, articulate young man.

By the way, apparantly, the driver of Russell's car, who was also killed, is a former NFL player but has not been ID'd yet

It's always sad to lose a loved one this way...especially at Christmas time. I'm curious to find out who the driver was.

well, that sucks. I hope other NFL players can learn from these kinds of stories to live a safer life.

Apparently they were racing another vehicle, during rush hour, in the middle of Los Angeles. It can be said that Darrell died as he lived.

I'm glad no innocent people were harmed.

Funny how death doesn't give a **** who the idiots are.

Racing in LA during rush hour? :pity:

Racing in LA rush hour is kinda fun, actually. Quite a rush. That being said, it's too bad about Russell.

Driver was not a former pro, but a college team mate, Michael Paul Bastianelli.

Police spokesman Kevin Maiberger says the Pontiac Grand Prix was traveling "at a high rate of speed" at about 6 a-m when it jumped a curb and struck a tree, a newstand, a fire hydrant, a light pole and another tree -- before hitting the bus. The broken fire hydrant unleashed a spout of water onto La Cienega Boulevard.

That would be comical if it wasn't tragic...that's right out of a comic book...right with the spout of water from the fire hydrant....

sounds like they just might of been traveling a little too fast....it's an excellent time to speed...at 6 AM the roads are fairly empty, and after an all nighter, your immortal...

Too bad that one isn't taped for a Driver's Training movie...

OK kids...this is how you do EVERYTHING WRONG...After an all nighter, the object is to drive as fast as you can to get home as fast as you can...

The only thing these clowns failed to accomplish on their crash was knock over three old people and a prostitute...otherwise, they even got the news stand...

The roads aren't empty at 6 AM in Los Angeles. Or Denver for that matter. Like someone said, that's rush hour now.
