View Full Version : Darrent Williams Out Six Weeks?

Who would have thought that any of us would have cared when he was drafted. But the prospect of losing him for several weeks simply sucks.

The Broncos may have to make their playoff run without valuable rookie Darrent Williams.
The starting right cornerback and return man could be out up to six weeks with tears in his groin, according to two sources close to Williams. He said Sunday after the Broncos' 12-10 victory over the Baltimore Ravens that he was scheduled to have an MRI and he was fearing the worst. "It might be bad," Williams said then.
Groin injuries are difficult to treat, and rest often is the best rehabilitation. If Williams misses six weeks, he may not be ready until the AFC championship game Jan. 22, if Denver (10-3) advances that far. Coach Mike Shanahan, who makes all injury announcements for the team, wasn't available Monday. A Broncos spokesman said he had no information on the status of Williams' injury.
Williams said Sunday he was injured on the opening play while making a touchdown-saving tackle at Denver's 10-yard line on a 87-yard kickoff return by the Ravens' B.J. Sams. Williams said he aggravated the injury on a later kick return. He did not play in the second half.
With the second-round pick from Oklahoma State out, fellow rookie Domonique Foxworth likely would start. The two have been splitting time at right cornerback.
With Williams out Sunday, Foxworth played right cornerback in the Broncos' base defense. Curome Cox and Sam Brandon split time in the nickel defense when the team used an extra defensive back. Rookie Karl Paymah and second-year player Roc Alexander also could be candidates for playing time in multiple-cornerback sets.
As for the return game, wide receiver Charlie Adams, Alexander and running back Cecil Sapp likely will get opportunities on punt and kick returns with Williams out. Williams has returned 18 kickoffs for an average of 23.9 yards, with his longest return a 36-yarder. He has returned 17 punts for an average of 8.7 yards, with his

longest return going for 52 yards.
Williams, one of the top defensive rookies in the NFL, has intercepted two passes, returning one 80 yards for a touchdown at Oakland on Nov. 14. He has 49 tackles and one sack.
Foxworth was unaware of Williams' status when contacted Monday. He said it was up to the Broncos' young players to elevate their game if Williams is out for an extended time.
"We all have to step up, especially me," Foxworth said. "I feel like I'm ready. I've played quite a bit, and Darrent and myself have been splitting time. So if this is the case, I guess there will be no splitting. I just have to step up."
Denver's next two opponents, Buffalo and Oakland, have struggled with their passing games, but the Broncos finish the season at pass-happy San Diego. Two potential playoff opponents, Cincinnati and Indianapolis, have outstanding passing games. Quarterback Peyton Manning and the Colts lit up the scoreboard against the Broncos in the past two postseasons, easily eliminating them in the wild-card round.
If there is a chance Williams could return this season, Denver likely would not make a significant addition to the roster. Veteran cornerback Lenny Walls was put on injured reserve because of a groin injury on Nov. 1, which ended his chances of returning to the team.

There is conflicting info. Posters have said their local news broadcasts tonight say its a 3-4 week thing, KFFL says 2-3 weeks, DPO says up to six weeks.

Very true. These two youngsters are a big reason why the Donks are sitting where they are. It's been a long while since Denver has had rookies step in with the swagger and skill set necessary to get it done at the NFL level. I for one went ape sh!t when I saw that the Rat drafted three CB's in a row. Just another reason why the rat is smarter than all of us.

This article doesn't seem to have any new info. Even the quote by Williams is taken from a comment he made shortly after the game, I saw it on another thread. Just a compilation of info that's already out there.

I've had a groin injury, and I tend to lean toward the six week prognostication... They're very painful and make it difficult to do athletic things... and worst of all, they linger for a damn long time to be re-aggrivated...
Hopefully it's just a minor tear, which is still very painful, but might be able to be played through if needed.

This makes getting the No. 2 seed even more critical. With a week off DW would have had 5 weeks to heal. Hopefully he is a quick healer!

Wow. This could kill you guys in the playoffs.
I don't think so. To be honest, it was looking like Foxworth was probably the better cover guy, anyway. 3 weeks ago he started sharing time at RCB - 50/50 with Darrent. Plus - and this is REALLY IMPORTANT: Champ seems to be getting well. If he's 100% - and Foxworth stays steady - we're OK. Curome Cox is actually pretty good for the nickel, with Sam Brandon as "big nickel," and hopefully Karl Paymah and Roc (gulp!) Alexander might give a little depth.
Actually, Lenny Walls would be perfect right now for the nickel .. . but whadd're ya gonna do?!?!

Foxworth should be able to handle the starting job, but the problem will arise when we face the Colts.
You have GOT to have a decent 3rd CB to play the Colts, as we painfully found out last year thanks to Roq Alexander.
Lets hope Williams can make it back for the Colts game (if we get there!).

The Colts are a runaway train..Like that Coors Light Train....Dungy has that team clicking on all...it's possible to catch them in a stumble, but they look alot like the 98 Broncos...
Damn people...we haven't even got to them yet...someone slap Kubiac or whoever was calling those plays...12 points at home is pathetic.
Three years we have been wondering who really calls the plays...even Wabbit doesn't really know...it's some Samuel Adams beer formula...
My best guess is that Pubes calls down from the box to Shanny, then he scans his own sheet, and gives the Ceasar, up or down...yes or no...
Then Shanahan is the one to actually radio in the play to crazy Jake...
All this has to be done in clockwork fashion as well...your talking about running command central to the front in 20 seconds max...
Quoted for truth.

If we keep our foot on the gas we should be able to get home field until the AFC Championship, meaning that we'll only see the Colts in the AFC Championship (they've locked up homefield throughout). If we get that far Williams will have had his 6 weeks "worst case" time of rest.
The team needs this to light a fire under their asses. Fight for that bye week and help yourselves out.

Williams' news not good
Cornerback will miss at least two games after straining groin
By Jeff Legwold, Rocky Mountain News
December 13, 2005
ENGLEWOOD - Denver Broncos cornerback Darrent Williams, who underwent a magnetic resonance imaging exam Monday on his strained right groin, isn't expected to play again until, at best, the Dec. 31 regular-season finale in San Diego and likely will be held out of the three remaining regular-season games.
Williams, who suffered the injury on a first-quarter kickoff return Sunday and did not return, will miss at least the next two games, Saturday against the Buffalo Bills and Dec. 24 against the Oakland Raiders.
Broncos players were off Monday and coach Mike Shanahan was not available for comment. Williams said after Sunday's game he was "concerned" about the injury.
Groin strains typically can take anywhere from three to four weeks to heal, depending on the player's injury history, the severity of the muscle damage and the aggressiveness of the rehabilitation.
Also to be considered is Williams' position in the defense. Cornerbacks require top-end speed simply to function and continually must twist out of a backpedal into a full run.
It's difficult to do all of that and remain effective if a player isn't near 100 percent.
Williams has started nine games this season and played in 12. He missed the Oct. 2 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars because of a sprained right ankle.
The Broncos will earn a first- round bye in the postseason if they win out. The Indianapolis Colts (13-0) wrapped up home-field advantage in the AFC, and the first-round bye that comes with it, with their victory Sunday against the Jaguars.
The team with the next-best record in the AFC also will earn a first-round bye and a home game in the divisional round.
If the Broncos earned that bye, they would not have to play their first postseason game until 33 or 34 days from today.
Divisional round games are the weekend of Jan. 14-15.
DON'T FORGET: The Broncos certainly love Champ Bailey's eight interceptions this season, which rank second in the league behind the nine by Deltha O'Neal of the Cincinnati Bengals..
But what has had many of his teammates talking of late is Bailey's work against the run.
"Everybody forgets he dislocated his shoulder earlier in the year, but he tackles as well as any corner I've been around," Broncos safety John Lynch said.
"That's why I think he's the best at what he does."
Bailey dislocated his left shoulder making a tackle on Miami Dolphins running back Ronnie Brown in the opener and has played with a harness on the shoulder since.
"If you watch the way he supports the run and throws his body around, there aren't a lot of defensive backs who do that . . . ," Shanahan said. "He is a complete football player and likes to compete."
TOUGH GO: Buffalo Bills running back Willis McGahee is coming off his worst performance since he became the team's starter last season.
McGahee, who briefly left Sunday's 35-7 loss against the New England Patriots after hitting his head on defensive tackle Richard Seymour's knee, finished with 3 yards on eight carries.
Overall, the Bills rushed for 14 yards on 12 carries against the Patriots. Quarterback J.P. Losman led the team in rushing with 7 yards on one carry.
McGahee has struggled in the team's nosedive. The Bills have lost six of their past seven games, including their past four.
McGahee, who rushed for 1,128 yards last season, including seven, 100-yard games, has recorded only one 100-yard game in his past seven and has not scored a touchdown since the Bills' Oct. 16 game against the New York Jets.
ETC.: This will be the Broncos' second short week in a four-game stretch that started with their Thanksgiving game in Dallas. They played the Cowboys four days after facing the Jets and will play the Bills six days after facing the Baltimore Ravens . . . The Bills formally informed the NFL they have lifted receiver Eric Moulds suspension, making him eligible to return to the team .

injuries happen....Denver needs to play through this and find another nickle corner. Some teams have been extraordinarily lucky with injuries this year (like the colts) but Indy is seriously overusing their best player. James is on pace for 400 carries (more than in any season....the last time he had that many carries he got hurt).
All in all, it's a part of the game. I wonder if the press will decide to not report on this much....since it would mean they would have to admit they were wrong on about 90% of what they said about the Broncos personnel moves before training camp.

This hurts badly in a potential matchup with Indy in Indy. Hes a kid who comes up with big time plays at important times. As I've started to let myself look and think about what it would take to win in Indy my conclussion is run run run and come up with atleast 3-5 huge plays on the D. You figure one or two will come from the Dline/backers (sack/forced fumble) and Champ is a canidate to make a pick after that who on our team is a "playmaker"??? DW could very well have been that guy.

They have been splitting time. They are doing that for a reason. I think Foxworth has earned playing time for a reason either practicing well or good game performances or keeping them both fresh I don't know hard for me to see it on TV & watch my Daughter all at same time.

If we can take care of business the next three weeks and get a bye we should be fine. Worst case scenario is DW is out until the AFC Championship game. He could well be ready for the first playoff game with a bye (5 weeks off). Can we handle Buffalo and Oakland without him? I think so. SD will be tougher but may be meaningless for SD by then also. It's not like he is gone for the season no matter what. The sky is not falling!

Yea. Makes you feel really dirty doesn't it.
Fox has already been splitting time with Williams as the #2 CB, I think he'll fill the role well. Cox and Paymah should make quality nickle corners as well.
This isn't like last year when Roc Alexander was a top 3 DB on our depth chart. He's down at #5 right now with Williams out, and thats not considering the fact that Brandon would play over him as well I'd imagine.
We're a hell of a lot better off this year than last, even without Williams. Here's hoping we win out and get a bye week to heal up though.
