View Full Version : I agree, Mediator - Off coverage sucks

We're well into the season and Bob Slowik's scheme is what has kept opponents in the game and I believe allowed teams to score on us at will in their two-minute drills. I am sick of seeing a corner playy off the receiver ten yards and then watch as the QB spins and immediately throws a three yard completion to their receiver who runs for four more. Its getting pretty old and I'm hoping someone in the press asks about this in Shanahan's next press conference.

Good post, I'm baffled and sickened at the same time. I don't understand, I really don't.

I agree 100% and I noticed the plays we were playing up on the receivers we tended to have better coverage that lasted until the line could pressure Boller. As I recall, the fumble was a play with all our DB's right on the receivers

Add to that our horrible pass-rush. 2 sacks in the last 3 games. We hardly sniffed Boller today. None against Green last week. (Not even close)
I don't know how you fix something like that at this point in the season. You can't just suddenly get talented up front. I like the new guys, but we've got too many pretty good players and not enough dominant ones up front.
Let's hope we can get creative with our blitzing come playoff time.
Same old, same old.

Yeah. The guys get a little penetration and then they fall down or give up. There were plays today where the D-linemen didn't realize Boller hadn't thrown the ball and then had to "start rushing again". It was ugly. The best I can say is that our team, outside of Plummer, played to C level game in all three phases. We were flat.

Great post.
At this point I'd be happy with 7 yards off the ball.
It's almost like they think they will be penalized for standing an inch closer

I couldn't see the game but I caught a glimpse of Boller falling down and not a single Bronco jersey in sight? WTF happened to our DL?

It's easier to notice when you're at the game just how far away our DBs are lining up.

Well, I don't think they're doing it by choice. You would be very hard pressed to find any D-Coordinator willing to put rookies in press coverage, especially with our safeties and how often we use Lynch in the box.
Oh, and that int last week off Green was the exact play you're mentioning above where he took the snap and threw an immediate pass to a WR covered by Dwill (i think) who was playing off but still managed to use his speed and explosiveness to grab the int. Just mentioning the good with the bad I guess.

I don't know about that. When I can't even see the corners on the screen becuase they are so far upfield I begin to wonder if we only have nine or ten defenders on the field.

What really pisses me off is when we play off in all out blitzes or third and short. It's like one aspect of our defense doesn't know what the other is doing. Or we run those damn delayed blitzes. I don't know why we are just not more aggressive all the way around. We are not getting pressure with our front four and need to blitz more oftern. The defense is built on speed - why not use it?

Yeah, it was extremely noticeable with Mark Clayton, Who I really, really wanted to be a Bronco! That guy is going to be good. If he was anywhere else but Baltimore he would already be making an immediate impact...
As far as Slowik goes, I still would much rather have him than Gibbs. I think The Scheme does have to change, but look at what we are working with, rookies and Lynch, god bless him, but we don't have that coverage safety that you kind of really need in today's NFL.
Also not mentioned is How many TURNOVERS we have this year (compared to last), at least a little bit of that has to do with scheme. So, we have to give the coordinators some props on that. And wasn't that the big b**** everyone had last year?

well i think its helpful in one respect.
it allows the DBs to play the ball more resulting in more INTS. sure we give up more yards but our turnover ratio is much improved.

Based on the D's performance yesterday, I fear what will happen when we face the Colts or the Bengals. The entire team has played sub-par for three straight games, just bumbling through. We're lucky to be 2-1 in those games!

when you play indy you HAVE to play up and hit the wrs in the mouth within 5 yards. if you dont your going to have a long day.

like I have been saying
if I was an o-coordinator against us
I'd run 4 yard hitch routes all game long
our pass defense sucks b/c our dline can't create any pressure, then you add in the fact we play 10 yards off the damn ball it seems

yah pretty much u beat indy by hitting them. hit their receivers, hit payton, hit edge, hell might as well try to hit dungy too I hear he can't call as good of a game after he's been speared!

what else can they do?....last week, Foxworth was getting burned in man on man coverage.
bottom line:....get some more pressure on the QB.

maybe hes playing our dbs off the receivers too much because he knows our dline isnt getting pressure and wants to guard against letting a guy go deep on us since qb is gonna have plenty of time to throw.either way its not gonna be good for us.

Shack and I were yelling at the TV almost the entire game. We made freaking Kyle Boller look like an decent NFL QB. Sure he threw the INT's but how he completed some easy passes against us.
Playing 8 yards back is inexusable..sure you were protecting the rookies earlier in the year but they aren't rookies anymore plus that doesn't explain Champ playing so far off.
Our pass rush has been simply non-existant. I fear us facing a good passing team in the playoffs...it could be an early exit.

Considering their performance against the run, the pressures they have created on the QB, the dramatic fashion in which they have helped the turnover ratio, and lastly their relative economic cost, I would say the answer is an easy YES!

Warren makes up for the moves easily, but dang Reggie sure did look good yesterday against the Colts.

I agree- i hate off coverage.
Timing is crucial in the NFL and if you jam the WR at the line, timing is messed up and you have a shot for a play.

Exactly. Putting up a rookie CB on man coverage with slow safeties like Lynch and Ferguson is like waving a giant red flag in front of a bull. Coyer and co. are trying to limit the big plays against the D and for the most part it's worked and are willing let offenses dink and dunk because we've been able to get those ints.
A bigger problem would be how to get to the QB on max protect schemes that seem to be the flavour of the month against the Broncos these days.

The most annoying thing is lining up 10 yards off on 3rd and 3, which leads to very easy first downs. It seemed to happen frequently yesterday. We're lucky that Boller returned to form with horrible plays in the red zone yesterday. Still, an ugly win counts as much as a pretty win, and I'll take it.

DWill was hurt yesterday & bet that had somthing to do with the coverages.
I hope DWIll can rest up & be ready for playoffs or we are in real trouble.
I also wonder if Coyer is backing off his Gameplans to hide schemes so as not to give away tips on tape to Indy or other Playoff teams. Denver looked flat last 2 weeks but it was enough to win this week & should have been enough last week. Just a thought...

does no1 else get credit for any of this? are the broncos the first team in history that can only pressure the qb?

We're lucky to get the W yesterday. I mentioned last week that we don't match-up well with the Ravens. As most have said, why in the hell are we playing of almost ten yards off all game? Even Champ was playing off, but I 'm guessing that was due to his tender hamstring.
We better get back to where we were defensively against Philly, and soon! If not, my hope is we don't play against Indy or Cincy. They'll score at least 40 points against us. Someone said earlier that you have to man up against the receivers for those teams. Playing scared isn't cutting it. Ravens receivers were still getting deep on us. Especially on routes over the middle or on the edges.
Coyer better pull his head out his ass or it will get pretty ugly during the playoffs.
