View Full Version : Do we go QB in round 1?

With the "pro bowl" play of Jake Plummer this year, does Shanny draft someone in round 1 to take over in a year or 2? Shanahan makes some bizarre draft picks that make our heads spin, but will he do it again?

No Way. I dont think there will even be any 1st round grade QBs on any teams boards by the time we are up with 1A even.

Nope - at this point only Leinart goes in round 1. But probably someone will pull a "Boller" and reach

Wouldn't put it past Shanny. I think he's going to look at 1b as a "free" pick to some degree and the pick is going to be a surprise to a lot of people.

This is what scares me, He has that kind of mentality.
I'd love a QB, but i don't see anything special, or atleast anything like 2 years ago (Manning, Rivers, Roethlesberger).
I'd love to trade for Rivers though, too bad Sandy Eggo has him and will never give him up to us.

I don't agree with that. If he is going to use any pick as a free pick it will be the 4th that we got from the Skins. So look for us to take someone that was hurt some last year and would have been picked "sooner" had he not been hurt. That said my money would be on him picking Charlie Whitehurst in that spot. He had a off year and he does have some talent for Mike to work with.

Or that Fresno State QB, if he lasts to late 2nd or 3rd round...

I think Jay Cutler might move up to the first round.

Is it possible that 1b could be Mason Crosby? A thought.

Crosby stays in school and as much as I like him, a low 2nd rounder is as high as I´d go to get Mason.

Jake will be 32 when the playoffs get here next season. If it takes at least a year for a rookie QB to be ready and another before he's playing well that means if we do not draft a QB out of this draft we'll have Plummer playing at least until he's 34. Jake's game depends on mobility. Will he have it much longer? The time to look to the future is now, especially with two 1st rounders. I don't think Leinert is that great and would not move up for him but with the right deal if I were Shanny I'd move up.
I have five guys I'd move up to take if the opportunity arose and after going back and forth on him and reading his scouting reports and watching down here at UT this year I've finally decided that Vince Young is one of those guys. I'd also move up for Mario Williams, Mathias Kiwanuka, Brady Quinn, D'Brickashaw Ferguson or Haloti Ngata.

Draft gurus are speculating that Cutler could move into the bottom half of the first round.
We don't need a QB this year anyway. Sure, Jake is going to be 32 by next year's playoffs, but he doesn't look like he has lost any footsteps yet.
I say draft a QB next year.. I'm biased toward VY, but if he came out this year, I would not want Shanny to take him. He needs a solid senior campaign to sell me. If he does have a solid senior year and improves his passing game at all, I would sell the house for the guy. It could be possible.....because I think Quinn will likely end up being the 1st overall pick in the 2007 draft.

How many top NFL prospects stay until their senior seasons, especially if they would go in the top half of the 1st round? Not many. I doubt either Young or Quinn stay in school but if they do they're likely to be much harder to get next year since we probably don't have 2 #1 picks to bargain with. So realistically speaking it's highly unlikely we can get a QB of any worth next season in the draft even if these guys are still there. If we don't that means we're now committed to Jake till he's at least 35; unless of course we sign another free agent veteran, not something I want to see happen. What more does Young need to show anyway? The guy's 6'6", runs like the wind and has an NFL arm. Mac Brown's Texas program for garaunteed underachievement by NFL QB prospects isn't going to teach Young anything he doesn't already know anyway so why should he stay? If either he or Quinn are available anywhere near the 10th spot I think you have to seriously look to jump up and get one of those guys. Jake can't do it forever and it's ALWAYS a mistake to wait to long to draft a QB if a good one is there and you pass him up. Who knows when the next chance comes along? The only guys I'd rather have than either of these two QB's are Williams and Ngata because they are both STUDS and because our D-line needs young blood pass rushers. Other than that...give me Jake's understudy in this draft and use one or two of the 3rd round comp picks we'll have coming to jump higher in the 2nd round so we can grab a safety or a reciever that can start in a year.

Fine...then we trade our own in the 3rd to move up higher in the 2nd.
QB in the 1st round? Highly unlikely, even given Shanahan's propensity to make a surprise pick or two each year. Who predicted us trading OUT of round 1 last year? With two first round picks, we can trade up and get a quality player (WR or DL?) or stay pat and spend two picks on both positions. Of course, trading out of round 1 is an option but unlikely given that's what we did last year.
im really hoping we trade one of our first rounder and try to move up in next years draft and then draft Calvin Johnson.. he is everything we need in a WR.. big athletic and unlimited potential

i dont think crosby is worht suck a high pick to me he will be around later

If Johnson comes out next year he is a top 5 pick. Ain't gonna happen.
Crosby has said he is staying in school

Johnson is a stud, its too bad he's gonna get shut down by Eric Weddle tomorrow.
BTW, keep an eye on Steve Fifita tomorrow...Im hoping we can pick him up with one of our comp 3rd rounders

My opinion is this, draft Hagan and that Bluffs TE in the first round. IF Crosby comes out draft him in the first round. God I hate saying draft CU players in the first round, as for the QB wait. Plummer isn't old and MAN DID HE KICK ASS THIS YEAR!!!!

How many??? Way to many to list! I'll go with just Texas players so you get an idea. Ricky Williams, Michael Huff, Quinten Jammer, Leonard Davis, Cedric Benson, Roy Williams, Rod Wright, Derrick Johnson, and now it looks like Vince Young as well! Texas has done an outstanding job of bringing back their great Junior players to finish their careers. All of those guys I just listed would have been first round picks had they come out as Juniors. Some of them even top 5 picks and more than half being top 10! So with just one school you have 9 players and I'm probably forgetting a couple as well! I think you could look all over the nation and find another dozen or so. Just going from the top of my head here's a quick list of Juniors from last year that decided to stay in school, these guys would have been first round picks last year and atleast two or three would have been top 5-10 picks! Da-Brick, Leinart, DeAngelo Williams, Kiwi, Marcus McNeil (late first), Ngata (late first, WAS eligble as a Soph...same case as Fitz), A.J. Hawk, and Jimmy Williams. That's 8 plus 2 from UT. You're talking about 1/3 of the first round! I didn't add Winston to this scenario, but you could make the case for him being a first round pick last year even injured! BTW, this happens almost every year. Maybe not 1/3 of the potential first rounders, but every year there are atleast 15 first day Juniors that decide to stay in school for their Senior year!

Both Young and Quinn have said publicly that they are going back to school. The agents have two weeks to wave the money in front of their eyes and try to make them change their minds.

I think Shanny will invest a day one pick in a QB this year, but probably not a first rounder. Whitehurst, Olsen, Shockley or Croyle are all 3rd round possibilities in my book. In the later rounds, Justin holland has a great arm and might be a good pickup.

I don't really like any of the guys you mentioned, but Whitehurst seems to have potential, but needs a couple of years coaching. Shockey - not the NFL skills, but might make it at another position as he is smart and athletic. Croyle is so skinny he can hide behind a small fence post.
Saturday morning watch Paul Pinegar of Fresno. Good size, smart, strong and plays in a pro style offense. He might be a good mid round pick up. Probably never be a super star, but could be a nice steady, manage the game type.

I have been one that has continually said that Vince Young will not be in this year's draft. But I do believe the "unknown" with the CBA (collective bargaining agreement) is the wild card that will prompt a rush of juniors declaring this year. And with a minimum of 6 picks in the first 4 rounds - and more likley 8 picks once we get comp picks - I hope everyone and their brother who is considering going into the draft does so!

I couldn´t stop thinking of Coyle´s "success" in the Iron Bowls if we picked him.

If that happens I wouldn´t mind trading one or two of the 07 picks for picks in 06.
If Brady Quinn and Jeff Samardzija declared, where´d you see them go?

Like everyoine else, I'd be guessing. I would think Quinn would be #3 QB taken after Leinart and Young and go mid first round and Samardzijia would go mid-late second round. If Young doesn't declare, Quinn moves up.

From the things I've been hearing, it wouldn't be a suprise to see Quinn move right up to the first QB taken, regardless of VY and Leinart. Leinart is the concensus right now, but the feeling around most scouting circles is that Quinn is a lot better athlete to include better arm strength, speed, and agility. That will go a long way especially when you consider that Pete Carroll hasn't been very kind in regards to Matt Leinart. He's still pimping Carson Palmer, even when people ask him about Leinart being ready for the NFL. Recently he was asked straight up, how do you think Matt Leinart will do in the NFL when compared to other USC players. His answer, "Nobody I've ever coached has been as prepared or gifted as Carson Palmer", he then went on to blow his goat for about 2 minutes, never mentioning Leinart.
