View Full Version : I am sick of everyone blaming the Chargers for suspending Antonio Gates

I am so tired of hearing about how the Chargers are regretting suspending Gates for thier first game. What tehy should really be upset about is the fact that they didn't give the League's best running back the ball at all for thier first few games. LT didn't see the ball at all and that killed them finally after three games when they went back to the drawing board they realized holy sh%$ we can let LT run, throw or catch all of our touchdowns. No blame on the front office blame their coaching staff!!!

I agree.
The Chargers could have and should have won that game without Gates if they made one play in the last 20 seconds.
It wasn't because of Gates. The media needs something to stir up the pot if SD doesn't make the playoffs.
The big killer will be the blocked FG agains the eagles. To me, that was the final straw that should have concluded with the firing of the special teams coach. With the exception of Scifres, the special teams have been horrible ever since he's been here.

The Chargers tried to sandbag a guy who outplayed his contract, and in the process very well cost themselves a win. Good.
How many number one picks have the Chargers had in camp on time in the last several years?
NFL players are royally screwed when it comes to contract negotiations...teams simply do not have to honor the contracts, and many times don't, but for some reason the players are held to a higher standards. Holding out is all they have, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with it.
Gates got the money he wanted/deserved, is having another fine year, and the Dolts lost the game they suspended him for. That's one hell of a precedent. Typical Dolts management.
If the Donks wind up beating the chargers by one game...I for one will always point to AJ Smith's ridiculous bull **** posturing with a decent guy who just wanted what he deserved. Smith cut off his nose to spite his face...and the Dolts will be on the road in the playoffs because of it.

It was the first game of the year, mock, and they lost it - I think it was to Dallas. Gates was suspended 1 game - by the team - because he held out for a time during camp. It was a "principle" thing for the Chargers.
Many people (me included) think that suspension cost them that game. If Gates had been allowed to play, the Chargers might've won. That simple. Now they're 1 game behind, and they'd be TIED had they won . . . yadda, yadda, yadda

Ok, I stand corrected...I thought it was recent...why is this an issue again? Because they suspended Gates for the first games? That is their stupidity...Why don't we have these constant contract diputes? They get a ticket out of town...dnever has always paid market value and nver taken anyone to task...
Philly is doing a job on T.O. tho...man...it's pretty funny...that is a vindictive approach, but appropriate...
They will take 40 million and grab money back...it's very funny honestly...

The Bolts should have won period. Gates or not, you've got to win that game. It's the inability to finish(Phili) that has put SD in the hole, not losing in wk 1. Lets not forget the Donks were handled by Miami in wk 1.

Yeah, mock - I was right, it was against Dallas. Some of the guys on this thread pointed out they shouldda run LT more - and they're somewhat right - LT had only 19 carries, while Brees passed 35 times. Way too much of a passing emphasis w/o Gates in the lineup.

Actually I'm OK with the Dolphins game . . . so long ago . . .
Even the Giants game was a last-second thing.
It's THIS WEEK I'm not over, and I'll tell you why:
WHERE WAS TATUM BELL IN CRUNCH TIME?!
Tatum is one of the 10 most explosive game-changing players in the league today:
1. Despite limited action, he was on pace for 1000
2. He LEADS THE NFL in average per carry
3. He actually RAISED that average Sunday with his paltry 5 carries
4. He LEADS THE NFL in runs over 30 yards
5. Dayne and Anderson had 24 carries Sunday between them. Tatum had 5 - but led the team in rushing!
Demoting Tatum Bell to 3rd string is NOT the action of a sound mind. Especially on the road - against a hated rival - in a close game - with a chance to wrap up the division. I love the Marine, but this was his second dismal rushing game in a row - Sammy Winder-like dismal. And yet he was out there in 'crunch time.' Why?
WTF?!

I loved that blocked FG in Philly. That was one of the funniest moments this year.
ps, buff, tater didn't get demoted. Shanny passed more last week. 29 pass and 29 runs. My guess it'll be next summer before Tater gets another chance to show he can tote it 25-30 times in a game and finish every run without getting hurt. He's the change of pace back this year because he failed to beat out MA in camp.

Another one who's been brainwashed by Rosenhaus.
Players receive signing bonuses up front, which is the substitute for guaranteed money. Its utterly irrational to think any system of guaranteed contracts would be workable with the roster sizes and attrition rate that are the reality of NFL football.

-Slap-, you're a little off the mark here. The Chargers are the biggest cheapskates in the league . . . Pendejo is right - even though it is a Rosenhaus argument - players can be cut whenever they "UNDER-PLAY" their contract, but holding out is the player's only option other than honoring the contract. We can all agree that Gates WILDLY outplayed his. Look what happened to Javon Walker (but again, ignore the Rosenhaus link to understand my point). Javon outplayed his contract . . . bellyached . . . but THEN SHOWED UP! Now he's badly injured, and will probably never get value.
The Chargers "stood on principle" to suspend Gates, who had already given up his holdout and showed up in camp. It cost them the opener vs. Dallas, no doubt about it.
The REAL question is - what is a cheapskate franchise like the Chargers doing talking about "principle"? This is the same franchise that has had 3 "Franchise QBs" flame out or diss them . . . in just the past 7 or 8 years:
- Ryan Leaf
- Mike Vick
- Eli Manning

Look, you go to NFLPA and they won't even mention signing bonuses...and yes, it's guaranteed money unless they screw up by various means including felony's, misconduct and drug use...or playing with crotch rockets...
It will be interesting to see what happens with the money they want from T.O....while I think it's a little vindictive to keep rubbing nose in it, I think it sends a message to snooty megastars who think they are above the rules...Philly is totally out of it, and they are going to make an example out of T.O., and I think it's funny honestly...if your a CEO and become a moron, the BOD throws you off it...if your a banker, and squander or lie, you get thrown out of the bank and prosecuted...
Maybe the age of athletes thinking their behavior is immune from society will be at least stalled...that idiot pointing his finger at congress comes to mind...forget his name...in baseball...they need to suspend him for the year and throw him jail for perjury...pointing fingers thinking his "designer steroid" couldn't be detected...well news to him, Mr. Balco gave out the recipe in a plea bargain you moron...
