Lynch avoids fine for KC hit

By Bill Williamson
Denver Post Staff Writer
DenverPost.com

Denver safety John Lynch will not be fined for a hit on Kansas City receiver Eddie Kennison, an NFL spokesman said today. The play from Sunday's game at Kansas City was reviewed by the league, which determined a fine was not warranted.

Lynch was penalized for a helmet-to-helmet hit on an incomplete pass that would have made it third-and-7 from the Denver 9-yard line. The penalty on Lynch gave the Chiefs a first down at the 4. On the next play Chiefs running back Larry Johnson scored to give Kansas City a 31-27 lead with 9:58 to go. That was the final score of the game.

Replays of Lynch's hit appeared to show he led with his shoulder, not with his helmet.

He has gotten slammed by the media for being a head hunter, but in the same breath they praise him for his kindness for his off the field leadership in the community. He is a great guy who plays tough hard nosed football! I love it!

I say let's line up the referee in question, and allow Mr. Lynch to introduce Mr. helmet to the referee to "ensure" he never forgets what leading with your helmet really is. Pissant , s*&tbag excuse for an NFL referee....dman

Since that bad call lead directly to the winning score for KC, they should redo the score, taking away that TD, it was a blatantly bad call to begin with and directly affected the outcome of the game. We had them stopped on that play and probably would have held on 4th down.

Ok then, idiot, why is the league looking at it and saying that he was leading with his shoulder. It sounds to me like a bunch of KC Cheeps fans just realized how lucky they were and that it took a very bad call by the refs to allow your team to beat us in your own back yard. And that on a day when our defense wasn't playing up to par. JEEZ, grow up and learn to be thankful when you should be.

The last 3 minutes of this video shows definitive proof that Lynch hit Kennison's helmet with his left shoulder, not his helmet.

The pic that Idiotian posted also shows Lynch's helmet going to the right of Kennison's helmet, unless you believe that the helmets melded together from the force of the hit.

Good

now can they take back the 15 yd penalty that set up the winning touchdown?

Elway 4 Life

The Lynch hit was a BS call and the league just made that clear. S**t happens! The refs made the call that they thought was right based on Lynchs reputation for hittin hard and made the call. I'm cool with that. What really chaps my arse is gonzo playing defense all game and nobody saying anything. He is the best tackler on the team. Way to many non calls.

Flag was thrown late, too. Typical. It's not like that was 4th down and the chiefs were trying to force something, but come on, i HATE it when refs insert themselves into the game, and makes a call that completely changes the direction of the game. Hypothetically, we could have held them on 3rd down, they kick a FG, then the game is knotted at 27, the rest of the 4th qtr goes differently...anyways...ravens next.

I still have no problem with the refs throwing the flag, but I still think helmet to helmet should be a reviewable call. Being that it is a personal foul (15 yards/half the distance and autmoatic 1st down), it has such a huge impact. You can challenge the spot, or if a reciever is in bounds for a catch. Both of these calls are something that replay can make or break do to multiple angles, slow-mo, etc. The ref making the call may not have the angle, or it may have happened to fast for him to tell, thus it can be reviewed. Helmet to helmet is no different in my opinion.

A penalty for h2h has nothing to do with helmets making contact. It only refers to leading with the helmet against a defenseless receiver. 0 for 2, but don't worry about the facts, just keep on tooling around.

Even the league has admitted it was a BS call by not fining a player they love to get on. None are more disappointed than Chiefs fans.

They got away with cheating.

Seriously though, unless a play is whistled dead, it should be reviewable. Especially, plays that swing the momentum, change possession or put points on the board. I figure if a coach wants to toss the challenge flag for offsides, holding or spot of the ball he should be allowed, but he better be specific...Like Holding on #88. If it was truly holding on #49, he loses. I don't want the game slowed to a 6 hour crawl. At any rate, the human element needs to be improved. I've seen way too many flags from officials that are too far away or bad angles to know what happened.

The crack of pads made during a high impact hit can sound like helmets, but review shows that it wasn't a H2H hit. You can tell by the way #82's left shoulder moves in the video. It seems to me that the refs should have seen the same thing.

you still had over 9 1/2 minutes to score, and you couldn't do that. and 3rd and 7 from the 9 doesn't mean you stop kc. but good luck for the rest of your season, not trying to start anything.

Hey, pals. I just want to say I admire your courage. Both of you . . .

Coming aboard AFTER your team squeaks out a desperation, must-win game at home.

BRAVO!

Shanahan went thru the trouble of clearing Lynch and who's whining now? Why wasn't lynch fined then Chef fan? Your a collective band of morons and crawl around like cockroaches...

This is how fine our coach is...he went thru 7 video feeds till he could conslusively show he didn't HtH hit...

Doesn the NFL aknowlege it, yes, chef fan...no...

That's just another example of the extra miles that Shanahan will go thru...he could of let it drop and have Lynch fined and the NFL would self vindicate, but Lynch know coach would stand up for him...

Look you morons, if Lynch really hit him H2H, he would of been fined, so STFU...God Damn...

Get a clue...

The problem with these kinds of calls is that your first impression influences your further perception of what you see from different angles. If you believe it was a foul then you look for it in the next views. If you believe it was not, then you look for that. You have no problem seeing what you want to see unless you actively look with an open mind. There are not many people here who allow themselves that type of objectivity.

And that is why we're bitching more about our defense even letting your boys into the position of getting the lead off a bad call. The score should have been 27-3 or at worst 27-10 at that point, not 27-24. As it was, the Bronco D screwed up and let your boys stay in the game and it bit us this time. Hopefully our boys learn from this and will be able to win out to secure the #2 seed in the playoffs.

Scoreboard? If you insist:

PLACE . . . .TEAM . . . . . . . .W . . L
. First . . . . Denver . . . . . . 9 . . 3
Second . . . San Diego . . . 8 . . 4
. Third . . . .Kansas City . . . . 8 . . 4
.Fourth . . . Oakland . . . . . .4 . . 8

I fixed your post. If the season ended today, San Diego would have the tiebreaker over the Chiefs...

The flag for the hit shouldn't have been called, but Lynch shouldn't have cursed the ref out to get that second penalty...

Lynch was called for the penalty as he has a reputation of going for the head. Face it, anything close and he is going to get the flag. What you "morons" need to realize is that Lynch will implode at the most inopportune time for a team. Check his past. Tick..Tick..Tick..

Wrong, it just shows he was on a team that made it to the sb.

I guess that if he were playing for Oakland, KC or San Diego he would be the debil to the donkey faithful.

Face it, the guy is a dirtbag. Why do you think TB let him go?

Sheesh. Broncos fans are turning into 1985 (baseball) Cardinals fans...let it go!

Except they have a valid point, and you don't.

discussing defense with KC fans is sort of a futile effort, ya know.
