LONDON - The head of the pan-Arab news channel Al Jazeera on Saturday called for the contents of an alleged memo, in which US President George W. Bush reportedly suggests the bombing of the station’s Qatar headquarters, to be made public.

Station Director General Wadah Khanfar has also demanded talks with British Prime Minister Tony Blair over the issue. The memo, leaked by a British civil servant, allegedly includes a transcript of Blair attempting to persuade Bush against such an action.

“We demand a proper explanation and we would like to know the facts,” Khanfar told BBC 4 radio. “We have demanded an urgent interview (with Blair).”

News of the alleged Bush-Blair conversation, reportedly recorded by Foreign Office officials at a face-to-face meeting of the two on April 16, was first revealed earlier in the week by Britain’s Daily Mirror newspaper.

However Britain’s attorney general has barred media outlets from releasing the full contents of the alleged document.

I posted something similar on another thread about the need for propaganda control in a war. It is a necessary tool in any successful war campaign.

I really wish that the US would have been able to control propaganda in that region of the middle east. I guarantee that you would have seen a drop in the number of the kidnappings and beheadings of innocent contractors. Those news outlets are propaganda machines anyway...why not make them your own? It can only help.

I really dont think that bombing Al-Jazeera would have caused them to hate Americans any more than they already have for the past 50 years. Ironically enough, they hate Americans in large part because we are a bunch of immoral godless, Jews, and Christians. On top pf that, who really cares what they think? Are we really dense enough to forget that we haven't had successful diplomatic relations there in years? Does it matter? Do we need their support. No. We might like to have their oil, but we really dont need anything else from them. We are Americans. We are traditionally the most innovative and self reliant country in the World.

We are in a war. It is necessary to protect our people in a war. You take whatever steps that you need to take to do that job. Sometimes you have to do difficult things to ensure the safety of your own. I wish that Americans understood that. I think that that lack of togetherness amongst our own is going to cause us to crack, break, and ultimately to fall apart. Our enemies already know that all they have to do to defeat us in a war is to behead a few of our citizens on video, give an opposition party tools to attack the party in power, and sit back and wait for the whiny, wimpy Americans to leave because their people can't stand and fight.

THE Pentagon has admitted that the war on terror and the invasion and occupation of Iraq have increased support for al-Qaeda, made ordinary Muslims hate the US and caused a global backlash against America because of the “self-serving hypocrisy” of George W Bush’s administration over the Middle East.

The mea culpa is contained in a shockingly frank “strategic communications” report, written this autumn by the Defence Science Board for Pentagon supremo Donald Rumsfeld.

On “the war of ideas or the struggle for hearts and minds”, the report says, “American efforts have not only failed, they may also have achieved the opposite of what they intended”.

“American direct intervention in the Muslim world has paradoxically elevated the stature of, and support for, radical Islamists, while diminishing support for the United States to single digits in some Arab societies.”

Referring to the repeated mantra from the White House that those who oppose the US in the Middle East “hate our freedoms”, the report says: “Muslims do not ‘hate our freedoms’, but rather, they hate our policies. The overwhelming majority voice their objections to what they see as one-sided support in favour of Israel and against Palestinian rights, and the long-standing, even increasing support, for what Muslims collectively see as tyrannies, most notably Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Pakistan and the Gulf states.

“Thus when American public diplomacy talks about bringing democracy to Islamic societies, this is seen as no more than self-serving hypo crisy. Moreover, saying that ‘freedom is the future of the Middle East’ is seen as patronising … in the eyes of Muslims, the American occupation of Afghanistan and Iraq has not led to democracy there, but only more chaos and suffering. US actions appear in contrast to be motivated by ulterior motives, and deliberately controlled in order to best serve American national interests at the expense of truly Muslim self-determination.”

The way America has handled itself since September 11 has played straight into the hands of al-Qaeda, the report adds. “American actions have elevated the authority of the jihadi insurgents and tended to ratify their legitimacy among Muslims.” The result is that al-Qaeda has gone from being a marginal movement to having support across the entire Muslim world.

“Muslims see Americans as strangely narcissistic,” the report goes on, adding that to the Arab world the war is “no more than an extension of American domestic politics”. The US has zero credibility among Muslims which means that “whatever Americans do and say only serves … the enemy”.

The report says that the US is now engaged in a “global and generational struggle of ideas” which it is rapidly losing. In order to reverse the trend, the US must make “strategic communication” – which includes the dissemination of propaganda and the running of military psychological operations – an integral part of national security. The document says that “Presidential leadership” is needed in this “ideas war” and warns against “arrogance, opportunism and double standards”.

I didnt get that information from Limburger, I got it from the Iraqis that I know personally and a buddy of mine that lives in the UAE after having gone back home when his visa expired after 911 (he cant get back in).

It's hard to believe that so many people could be duped by such mindless jingoism - but, then again, Hitler used the same sort of demagoguery to great effect, and nothing appeals to the collective psyche of those folks who constitute Bush's hardcore base (read: fundamentalist loons, the rapture right, "Christian" folk who want a war of extinction against Islam, et al) more than your basic "god of light/god of darkness, heaven for good people/hell for bad people mythos.
