View Full Version : Quitting Smoking.........(need advice)

Been doing it for years off and on and I'm done with it as of yesterday @ 3:00pm. I've been able to quit for a year at a time but I seem to crack after that time.
Disco's been blazing em up alot lately also and he says he done with them. He's quit a couple times this year and I put a couple weeks together but because we work side by side it's basically an all or nothing thing for the both of us. We don't have any other co-workers around so if one of us lights up a cig it usually brings the other guy down. :alky:
So if you come by the tailgate and we seem a little edgy it's nothing personal.:)
I'd like to hear some success stories or tips that work for you. My plan of attack is this and it has worked in the past.
1) Keep my friend Jason in mind anytime I think about having a smoke. He's been battling Cancer for years and he has given me enough shiat about it to last a lifetime. Why I ever picked up a smoke when I was free and clear the last time he jumped on me about it is beyond me.
2) I have a huge stash of nicorrette gum ready to roll.
3) Workout program. I signed up to the local rec center. I plan on burning my lungs out as much as possible. I've used that technique in the past. Pretty hard to want a cig when you just worked out so hard your lungs are hurting for O2.
But I need some other intangible. I've always used the excuse I'd quit smoking when I had a kid. Well kids are still not in my immediate future and the years of smoking keep adding up.
So if anyone has some advice for me and the Disco man let us know. If you have quit how did you do it and how long has it been since your last smoke?
Thanks in advance....

I quit earlier this year for a couple of months then fell on my face. :nono: Ive quit about 6 times this year...anywhere from 2 days to 2 months. I just got back from a hunting trip where a 73 year old dude walked my arse off. That did it I quit again yesterday and wont touch them again EVER :strong:
I find that I can fight off the strong urges the easiest. They seem to piss me off more then anything its the little ones that get me. Sounds kind of stupid but the little urges to smoke "just one" on a friday after work are my downfall.
Good luck Meck ^5

I quit 3 years ago after about 9 years. I had my appendix taken out and was in the hospital for 3 days due to an infection. I couldnt smoke let alone get out of bed without help so I decided to quit then. I actually asked the doc some questions about smoking and was told that the addiction wears off after a week without. After that it's just a habit that needs to be broken. I tried not to go to any bars or clubs. Made all my friends that smoked stand outside to do it. It sucked ass for about a month but once I got through that month it was gravy after that. Now I cant stand to be around anyone who smokes. I'm that person that I used to hate.

I smoked during undergrad and quit about a month after I finished. The number one thing is you have to want to. Ask anyone that has quit (it's been about 6 years for me) and that is the number one thing......
other things that helped me:
1-I did twice as much cardio and cut out soda....made me feel healthier
2-always have some kind of gum on hand (I picked trident) and cram about 3 to 4 pieces in your mouth when you get the urge.
4-this one is the hardest-get really drunk around people that are smoking and don't smoke....
5-keep a calendar, put an X on the day when you go to sleep.
The hardest thing is making it the first month....good luck.

Have your doctor prescribe you Wellbutrin. It stops the moodswings. Worked for me.Just make sure to dtart taking it 2 weeks prior to smoking. Then limit yourself to 3 smokes a day, then 2,etc..Don't quit cold turkey.

What time to you get home?
Well we just got done with our first workout. We burned the lungs out pretty good. The first 24 hours is complete! lol
Disco Man is out getting a nice stop watch so we can run 40 yard sprints and time the progress. I figure if we run enough 40's a day that should help.
I'll have an update after he gets back from shopping for one.
It's actually pretty funny we had some Broncos gal emailing us via the of1.com site asking why we smoked so much in the tailgate pics. She also said "Looks like Disco put on a few pounds since the season started". lmao
I responded it's the price you gotta pay for tailgating. We're heading into week 12. Time to get in shape for the playoff run!:Broncos:
Wellbrutin eh rigs? Hmm I'll have to ask DigiGirl for a mood swing update in a few days. If she says "Meck your driving me nuts" I might have to look into it.
#4) on your list Ray Finkle is definetly the hardest for me. Smokers around me while I'm drinking is always my downfall. We might have to make a non-smoking section for future tailgates.;)
CBF1-Thanks for all those great cigars over the years dude but my cigar days are definetly done. *HACK*
Thanks for the input guys.
Anybody else out there want to join up on the Quit smoking bandwagon? No better time to suffer thru it then now!

You know the only time I've really seen Disco run was at the KC tailgate last year. For whatever reason he decided to streak the tailgate just before the game. I think it was the funniest thing I'd ever seen. He's quicker than you think but it was about 10 degree out when he was on the move...lmfao
I know nobody really gives a rats ass how fast either of us can run/or the fact that we are trying to quit smoking but I figure this thread atleast in our minds will hold us just a little bit more accountable.
I think Disco can run the 40 under 8.

Na its a good thing when anyone stops smoking. Its prolly one of the stupidist things a person can do. "hey I think Ill spend a stupid amount of money to burn up these weeds wrapped up in paper that have been treated in the same materials that are found in toilet bowl cleaner and jet fuel (thats true by the way) and hope to beat the odds of dying young.

Ok results are in.....
The highschool football coach happened to be on the field when we were warming up so we had two clocks running.
We ran two 40 yard sprints.
My Best time was 5.29
Disco ran a very impressive 5.69
What was Jerry Rice's 40 time? I recall saying I thought I could beat his time on a thread awhile back. That is going to take some practice.
Time for some water......

I've never had to quit smoking thankfully, but you guys need to do it. Strong mind, strong body. I've lost almost 60 pounds since the 4th of July and it's been a struggle all the way, but soooo worth it. It's amazing how soon you'll start to feel better (after the urge to kill everyone fades away, of course) :)

Thanks man, eat better, exercise more. That's the big "secret". I still love the good food, but I cut it down to once a week (Saturdays are free day). Last week we went to the Rodizio in Seattle :gimme: :alghh: :woowoo:
Got a treadmill and an MP3 player and I'm good to go. I enjoy the life I live and I'm looking to keep the good times going for a long, long time.
I know you guys can do it. It's always easier when you've got a buddy struggling along side you and calling you out if you stumble on the way to your goals.

Just remember... you are doing the single best thing for your health imaginable. COPD, coronary artery disease, peripheral vascualr disease, and every cancer imaginagle...You wouldn't believe the **** I see on a daily basis that is completely attributable to smoking.... way, way beyond cancer. One guy in the hospital is so screwed that he cant tolerate ANY type of surgery due to cardio/pulmonary risk -- so we are using maggots to debride the necrotic tissue in his infected above-knee amputation stump (which he got for peripheral vascular disease -- from smoking). Imagine lying in bed and having to change out maggots every 3 days on your stump.....
I've had pretty good luck with prescribing Wellbutrin and a nicotene patch. You would have no problem getting your primary care doc writing scripts for these meds.
Best of luck brother... if you fall off, get back on. Let me know if I can help.

Yep. I still haven't lost the 40 pounds I put on quitting 13 years ago, but as my internist says, if I keep the bloodpressure in check, the fat won't kill me. The nicotine gum gave me really nasty gas, and it was really the same as dipping, though I didn't need a coke can. The patch helped ease the witdrawl the first week. After that it was scotch and sex.

I've been using the patch but not the Wellbutrin. The doc gave me a prescription for it and when I got the damn stuff it said something about avoiding drinking while taking it so tossed that idea real quick :giggle: One bad habit at a time thank you very much :yep:

Good luck Meck, Disco, and Hotrod. It's a great thing that you are doing for yourself and for your family. There are benefits way beyond your own health that you can expect when you quit smoking.
When I quit, I took all of my smokes out to my favorite place to hang out. One that I had been going to and had great memories from childhood. I camped that weekend with a couple of good friends right by the lake and we had a good time. I planned to quit and I made a ritual out of the moment. I went down to a clear spot on the lake shore and thought about it. I really forced myself to consider why I smoked and what I needed to do to stay free of it. I knew how much I loved it, and considered it a significant and enjoyable part of my life. So I enjoyed every last bit of it knowing that once I was done with it there, I was done for good. I knew that it was going to be tough, but I was ready.
I smoked as much as I could on that shore by myself while watching the stars and the Oklahoma moon glimmer in the dark waves. I knew that it was going to be something that I would take on myself without much help from others, so I made myself responsible for my actions that night. I finished up as many as I could and threw the rest as far as I could into the lake, said goodbye to an old friend, and walked back up the shore. 7 years and a whole lot of prayer later, I stand free of addiction.
It took alot of self-imposed positive reinforcement to keep me free of it. I made sure that I got involved with certain groups of people that would keep me accountable. That helped me more than anything else. I got so busy filling the space that the need for smoking, that I really just didnt have any space in my life for it. Every time I thought about picking it back up, I saw the looks on the faces of the children that I mentored if they saw me reinforcing the idea of smoking. That did it for me really quick.

You'll get there...dont give up. It's not only a physiological process, but it's a psychological and spiritual process as well. You'll find the place you need to be in mentally to quit. It's just a matter of time.

Good luck to all the OMers who are trying to quit... Mr. Blue won that battle several years ago. It's very tough, but well worth it in terms of your future health...and the health of those around you (family, co-workers or anyone who might be exposed to the secondhand smoke).

Awesome news Meck. You should be getting to the point where you really start noticing increased lung capacity. Smokers have no idea how ****ty their air capacity really is until they quit.
Sassy Im cruising right along. As summer has peaked I've realized how much time was lost from activities with my kids while sneaking out for a smoke. I did trip up once for about a week awhile back. I actually bought a book called "Easy way to quit smoking" by Allen Carr. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to quit or giving a copy to anyone that you know that smokes.
