GAME: Calgary Flames (12-8-2) at Colorado Avalanche (11-7-2).
TIME: Monday, 9 p.m. EST.
A strong home record has vaulted the Calgary Flames near the top of the Northwest Division. Now, they need to take that success on the road.
[0]
The Flames will try to string together consecutive road wins for the first time this season when they meet the Colorado Avalanche at the Pepsi Center.
Calgary is 9-2-1 at home this season, outscoring its opponents 31-21. On the road, though, the defending Western Conference champions are just 3-6-1 and have been outscored 36-25.
The Flames have not played a road game since a 4-3 win Nov. 10 against the Phoenix Coyotes. Calgary wrapped up a four-game homestand Saturday with a 5-2 loss to the Chicago Blackhawks.
The setback was the first in November for Calgary and ended an eight-game winning streak - the team's longest since the 1992-93 season.
Coach Darryl Sutter said his team, which played nine games in 18 days, ran out of gas.
"We're playing every other day, and you look at the teams coming into our building in this stretch, they're coming off two days off, four days off, and it's taken it's toll," Sutter said. "You could see tonight, mentally and physically, we weren't as sharp as we had to be. There just wasn't anything in the tank."
Calgary has won three of its last four against Colorado.
The Avalanche ended their three-game road trip Saturday with a 4-3 loss to the Los Angeles Kings. Pierre Turgeon had two goals and an assist, but Los Angeles' Pavol Demitra capped a hat trick with 3:32 to play, beating goaltender David Aebischer.
"Not much to say. In the end, it doesn't matter how you win or lose the game. It's if you win or lose," Aebischer said. "I know I can play better."
Aebischer gave up three goals on only eight shots during a 5-3 loss Nov. 12 to the Flames. In his last three appearances, Aebischer is 0-2 with a 5.41 goals-against average and a .781 save percentage.
In seven appearances prior to his recent slide, Aebischer was 7-0 with 2.42 GAA and .915 save percentage.
Aebischer is 8-3-1 with a 2.03 GAA, .929 save percentage and two career shutouts against the Flames.
STANDINGS (through Nov. 20): Flames - 26 points, 2nd place, 2 PB, Northwest Division. Avalanche - 24 points, 3rd place, 4 PB, Northwest Division.
TEAM LEADERS: Flames - Jarome Iginla, 11 goals and 22 points; Iginla, Daymond Langkow and Roman Hamrlik, 11 assists; Darren McCarty, 47 PIM. Avalanche - Marek Svatos, 10 goals; Alex Tanguay, 15 assists and 23 points; Ian Laperriere, 40 PIM.
SPECIAL TEAMS (through Nov. 20): Flames - Power play: 15.9 percent (23 for 144), 23rd in NHL. Penalty killing: 79.7 percent (106 for 133), 24th. Avalanche - Power play: 19.5 percent (27 for 138), 8th. Penalty killing: 85.3 percent (105 for 123), 4th.
GOALTENDERS: Flames - Miikka Kiprusoff (11-7-2, 3 SO, 2.42 GAA); Philippe Sauve (1-1-0, 0, 3.02). Avalanche - Aebischer (8-5-0, 0, 3.48); Peter Budaj (3-2-2, 0, 2.34).
SEASON SERIES: Tied, 1-1.
LAST MEETING: Nov. 12; Flames, 5-3. At Calgary, Alberta, Iglinla, Tony Amonte and Craig MacDonald scored in a 2:05 span of the first period to chase Aebischer.
ROAD/HOME RECORDS: Flames - 3-6-1 on the road; Avalanche - 6-3-2 at home.

Here we go again.... Avs down 2-0 to Calgary at the end of 1.
The Flames are the best team in the division, by far, IMO.
Yeahhhhh, a world record was just set at the Pepsi Center for the most bell ringing in one place. That was easily the dumbest thing I've ever seen.

Avalanche goal waved off on an absolutely brutal call.
At least Doug McLeod isn't calling tonights game. Mike Haynes is 1000 times better than McLeod.

Bad news - Milan Hejduk looks like he's been demoted to the fourth line.
Good news - Rob Blake ties it up on a nice pass from Brad May :notworthy .
Bad news - the refs are calling an atrocious game.
Good news - Peter Budaj is looking more and more like a number 1 goalie. Hopefully Aebischer rises to the occasion and matches Budaj game for game. Or we trade for Luongo!

The Sakic/Hejduk portion of the top line needs to start playing better or this team will be done. They've sucked in the three shootouts the Avs have lost (Tanguay too, but at least he's played well the rest of the time).
Hejduk looks lost out there. He has no confidence. It's obvious just by the way he's carrying himself on the ice. He didn't look like he wanted to take his shootout shot and then sulked off the ice after missing.
Losing to Phil Sauve really, really stings.
I like that Quenneville went with Sakic first, but I think Turgeon and Svatos should have had a chance instead of Sakic and Hejduk. Go with the hot hands. Losing to Sauve doesn't bother me as much, he was an inconsistent rookie. He had some terrible games, but he had a few good performances as well. Congrats to him.
This team has bigger issues then losing to Phil Sauve; our big money forwards, outside of Tanguay, are not producing and the defense is terrible. I don't care how many goals they score. This team will go nowhere unless the defensive side improves.

I also thought that Svatos should have been one of the shooters. Man, it looks like some of our shooters need to practice a bit on the one on one stuff too. I loved seeing Budaj so excited about stoning Iginla though. That guy is badass.
Rob Blake is catching fire as of late it seems. Hopefully the fire spreads to oh, say...the first line.
So why wasn't McDoof there tonite? I was so excited to hear that guy call the game, I never even heard a reason. I was so hoping that ELtitude had fired him and brought Haynes in. He is a blast to listen to.

The Avalanche is undergoing a shakeup - in the broadcast booths.
Longtime radio play-by-play man Mike Haynes worked with analyst Peter McNab on the Altitude Sports and Entertainment television broadcast of the Colorado-Calgary game Monday night at the Pepsi Center.
Haynes replaced Doug McLeod, in his first season as the team's television play-by-play voice. McLeod was not at the game, but Altitude president and CEO Jim Martin said the plan was for McLeod to remain a part of the Avalanche's broadcast team in some capacity.
Altitude, the broadcasting arm of Kroenke Sports Enterprises, the company that owns the Pepsi Center, Avalanche and Nuggets, controls the franchises' television and radio broadcasts.
"We're just trying some different things, 20 games into the season," Martin said between periods of the game. "We're trying to get the chemistry right and give Mike a shot and see how it plays, and how he works with Peter."
Martin said McLeod "is still with us. I still have confidence in Doug. ... We're just trying some things and trying to come up with the right mix. I can't really say what the final outcome will be."
Asked if Haynes and McNab can be considered a permanent team, Martin responded: "I wouldn't say that."
McLeod had been the play-by-play voice for the Phoenix Coyotes for six seasons before being hired by the Avs. McLeod also had broadcast games for the Minnesota North Stars and Pittsburgh Penguins.
Norm Jones, who has been Haynes' analyst since the arrival of the franchise in Denver in 1995, worked the radio broadcast alone Monday.

I've been begging for years for the Avs to go to a TV/radio simulcast. This would be the next best thing.

I haven't heard one person around town say they enjoy Doug McLeod's play-by-play. Most people I talk to about hockey either enjoyed or tolerated John Kelly. Not so with McLeod.
Mike Haynes is a bit of a cult legend here and I thought he did pretty well in his first Avalanche television broadcast. It helps that he actually plays hockey. I doubt McLeod could even fit his fat feet into a pair of skates. I really hope Haynes gets the full time gig. Then, as CO said, simulcast the TV broadcast on the radio.

I tolerated Kelly. He's not a bad play by play guy, but his "Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!" call really grinded my nerves. I actually like his brother Dan a lot though.

sure, but I liked Kelly more than Peter Mcnabb. You can almost hear the pain in Peter's voice if he has to be critical of the Avs.

Mt, I'm glad you have a comma between "up" and "my" above your avatar. At first glance I thought Pierre Turgeon had been washed up your ass. ;D
