The Blue Jackets, struggling badly without injured star Rick Nash, also get a fifth-round draft in the deal while sending forward Tyler Wright and defenceman Francois Beauchemin to Anaheim, which was looking to clear some salary-cap space.
Blue Jackets general manager Doug McLean said Nash's injury wasn't what prompted his team to make the trade.
''Obviously, losing Rick has been challenging for us, but that's not why we made the deal,'' said McLean. ''We have a young group of forwards and we figured we needed some strength down the middle.''

Fedorov, who turns 36 in December, is making $6.08 million US this season. McLean believes the 15-year veteran still has something left.

''I watched him play over the weekend, and he still looks pretty good to me,'' said McLean.
Wright, 32, is earning $947,133 while the 25-year-old Beauchemin is making $500,000.
The Ducks, who were hovering dangerously close to the new $39 million salary cap, saved over $4.5 million with the trade, giving them some much-needed breathing room. Anaheim now comes in at approximately $35 million, and general manager Brian Burke said he planned to use the extra cap space he cleared in the deal to make other moves down the line.
''I couldn't sell this as a stand-alone hockey deal, and I won't,'' said Burke. ''There were cap considerations. We like Sergei and it's too bad we have to lose a player of his stature, but this solves our financial problems and we're looking to reinvest that money.
''This isn't about saving money, it's about spending it in a different direction.''
By acquiring Fedorov, Columbus raised its payroll to approximately $38 million.
Fedorov, who returned to the Ducks' lineup over the weekend after missing 13 games with a groin injury, should give Columbus an offensive lift while Nash recovers from a sprained knee.
Nash tied for first in the NHL with 41 goals in the 2003-04 season and is expected to miss three to five more weeks. Without him, the Blue Jackets have stumbled to a 5-13-0-0 start, and rank last in the NHL with just 34 goals scored.
McLean thinks Fedorov will ignite Columbus's stagnant offence.
''Sergei's an all-around player and always has been,'' said McLean. ''He's at the stage of his career where he's looking for an exciting challenge, and I think he's certainly going to find one here.''
Fedorov has one assist in five games this season.
The six-time all-star and former Hart Trophy winner has appeared in 993 career regular-season games with the Red Wings and the Ducks, registering 431 goals and 589 assists with 631 penalty minutes. He led the team with 31 goals and 34 assists in 2003-04, his first season in Anaheim.
Wright has played in 18 games, picking up four helpers, this season, and in 588 career regular-season contests, he has recorded 77 goals and 68 assists with 145 penalty minutes.
Beauchemin, a rookie, has two assists in 11 games and is minus-6. He also appeared in one game for the Montreal Canadiens in 2002-03.
Burke insisted the move wasn't done to wake up the Ducks (7-7-4), who sit 11th in the Western Conference and have scored just 49 goals themselves.
''I dont think you shake teams up moving star-calibre players,'' said Burke.
