ARE YOU READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL!?!?!?!?!

OVERVIEW

Fresh off a week’s rest, the Denver Broncos (6-2) look to remain atop the AFC West with a key divisional game Sunday in Oakland against the Raiders (3-5). Kickoff at McAfee Coliseum is scheduled for 1:05 p.m. PST.

The Broncos, who defeated Philadelphia 49-21 in their last game before their bye week, and Raiders have identical records of 316-222-6 (.586) since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger. This season, both Denver (6 giveaways) and Oakland (7 giveaways) have been adept at protecting the football and rank No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, in the NFL in fewest turnovers.

The Broncos have been extremely successful after the bye week, compiling a 12-4 record and the NFL’s third-best winning percentage (.750) in those games since the bye was introduced in 1990. Denver has won seven of its last 10 road games against Oakland, including last season’s 31-3 victory on Oct. 17.

The Broncos own the NFL’s best record in the month of November (.718 / 28-11) since 1995. Denver will look to improve that total Sunday against Oakland, which is the lone divisional opponent that it has yet to play this season.

Oakland is coming off a 27-23 loss to Kansas City at Arrowhead Stadium last week. Leading by three points with five seconds remaining and the Chiefs on its 1-yard line, Oakland was unable to prevent Kansas City running back Larry Johnson from plunging into the end zone for the game-winning score.

THE LAST TIME OAKLAND 25, at DENVER 24 (INVESCO FIELD AT MILE HIGH, 11/28/04)

On a snowy evening at INVESCO Field at Mile High, Oakland rallied from an 11-point deficit in the fourth quarter to send the Broncos to a 25-24 defeat in front of a national-television audience on ESPN’s Sunday Night Football and 75,936 fans.

The Broncos had a chance to win the game after Jake Plummer drove his team downfield in the final minutes of the contest, but a 43-yard Jason Elam field goal attempt was blocked by Langston Walker to seal the victory for Oakland.

Ahead 3-0 in the second quarter, Plummer found wide receiver Rod Smith deep for an 85-yard touchdown pass, giving Denver a 10-0 lead. It marked the eighth-longest pass play in Broncos history and set career-highs in yardage for both players.

Oakland rebounded quickly as Doug Gabriel returned the kickoff to the Raiders’ 49-yard line. The return set up a 42-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Kerry Collins to wide receiver Jerry Porter with just 23 seconds remaining in the half.

Oakland capitalized on a Reuben Droughns fumble at the start of the second half with a 14-yard touchdown pass from Collins to Porter, and took a 13-10 lead. Denver regained control in the fourth quarter when Plummer found wide receiver Ashley Lelie for a 57-yard strike that set up a Droughns 3-yard touchdown run, putting the Broncos ahead 17-13.

The Broncos upped their lead on Oakland's next drive, as defensive tackle Monsanto Pope tipped a Collins pass at the line of scrimmage. The ball was intercepted by defensive tackle Ellis Johnson, who returned it 32 yards for the score.

With the Broncos holding a 24-13 advantage with six minutes remaining in the game, the Raiders mounted a comeback beginning with a 6-yard touchdown pass from Collins to Ronald Curry, bringing Oakland within five after missing a two-point conversion attempt.

After a 63-yard pass from Collins to Curry brought the Raiders to the Denver 10-yard line, they would take the lead on Porter's third touchdown reception of the game, a 5-yard pass from Collins on fourth-and-goal from the 5-yard line with 1:49 left to play in the game.

Down by 1, Plummer completed passes of 16, 14, and 12 yards to set up a 43-yard field goal attempt by Elam, but Oakland's Walker batted down the kick to end Denver's comeback hopes.

Droughns finished the game with 102 yards rushing on 28 attempts, his sixth 100-yard game in the past seven, while Plummer completed 14-of-23 passes for 245 yards with a touchdown and an interception.

OAKLAND, Calif. (Nov. 9, 2005) -- Though the Denver Broncos (http://www.nfl.com/teams/news/DEN) and Oakland Raiders (http://www.nfl.com/teams/news/OAK) are at opposite ends of the AFC West, it's hard not to expect a close game between these archrivals.
While the Broncos come off a bye, the Raiders are seething from a tough loss as these teams meet for the 90th time during the regular season.

"People are talking trash, giving you the bird, even young kids, so it's going to be an environment where it's not going to be too hard to get up for (the game)," Denver safety Nick Ferguson said of playing in Oakland. "So we know what to expect."
The Broncos stand alone atop the AFC West, one game ahead of the Kansas City Chiefs and 1½ in front of the San Diego Chargers. Last-place Oakland has been playing better in recent weeks, but trails Denver by three games.

That deficit could've been two, but the Raiders missed their chance for a third consecutive victory Nov. 6 as they were beaten 27-23 by the Chiefs on Larry Johnson's (http://www.nfl.com/players/playerpage/396164) 1-yard touchdown run as time expired.

Oakland, which had won two straight, rallied from an 11-point deficit in the fourth quarter to take the lead. Kerry Collins' (http://www.nfl.com/players/playerpage/1013) second touchdown pass of the quarter, to Randy Moss (http://www.nfl.com/players/playerpage/12576) from 7 yards out with 1:45 left, and Lamont Jordan's (http://www.nfl.com/players/playerpage/235223) 2-point conversion had given the Raiders a 23-20 lead.

"This is about as bitter a defeat as you could have," said Collins, who completed 21 of 40 passes for 175 yards. "It's tough. You fight your way back in a rough game, and find a way to get ahead, and then it doesn't work out. That's about as tough as it gets."

Jordan rushed for 93 yards to increase his career-high mark to 592. He's been a workhorse since joining the Raiders in the offseason, adding 339 receiving yards after totaling 417 in four seasons with the New York Jets.
<TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width=145 align=left><TBODY><TR><TD width=145>http://images.nfl.com/photos/news/img9034177.jpg </TD><TD width=15></TD></TR><TR><TD width=145>Jerry Porter teams with Randy Moss to form a dangerous duo. </TD><TD width=15></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

His increased production has helped the Raiders go 3-2 following an 0-3 start.

"You get a sense that we are not giving up, and that's something big," Jordan said. "I think that is something the fans really need to know -- that we might have lost this game and things aren't looking too bright for us right now, but we're not giving up and that's just pretty much the mind-set of the team right now."

Jordan has never played against the Broncos, who are 15-5 against the Raiders during the Mike Shanahan era. Denver has won seven of its previous 10 trips to Oakland, but does not expect to have an easy time improving upon that record.

"They're obviously extremely talented," Broncos safety John Lynch (http://www.nfl.com/players/playerpage/3854) said of a Raiders team that has lost three times by six points or fewer this season.
"It seems like they're in every game so it's going to be a tremendous rivalry (game) and I'm looking forward to the matchup."

Denver again will rely on a running attack which is second in the NFL with 1,366 yards, nearly double the Raiders' season total.

Since Shanahan took over in 1995, Denver has gained 134.9 rushing yards per game against Oakland, including a total of 376 in splitting the 2004 season series.

The ground game accounted for 255 yards in the Broncos' most recent game, a 49-21 rout of the Philadelphia Eagles on Oct. 30. Mike Anderson (http://www.nfl.com/players/playerpage/187481) ran for 126 yards and Tatum Bell (http://www.nfl.com/players/playerpage/492889) had 107, becoming the first pair of Broncos to surpass 100 yards rushing in the same regular-season game since 1976, when Otis Armstrong and quarterback Norris Weese did it.

Anderson (604 yards) and Bell (562) are on pace to become the fourth set of teammates in NFL history with 1,000 rushing yards apiece. The last duo to accomplish the feat was Cleveland's Kevin Mack (1,104) and Ernest Byner (1,002) in 1985.
The Raiders would like to avoid a feat of their own. They were flagged for nine penalties against the Chiefs and have been called for at least seven in every game this season. Oakland is on target for 162 penalties, which would top the NFL-record 158 the Chiefs had in 1998.

OAKLAND, Calif. (Ticker) -- Mike Shanahan had a bye week to prepare for his "favorite team." The Oakland Raiders (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/clubhouse?team=oak) may need more time to recover from their last game.

The Denver Broncos (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/clubhouse?team=den) visit the Raiders on Sunday in a battle of AFC West rivals.

Since being fired as Raiders coach by Al Davis 16 years ago, Shanahan is 15-5 against his former team. One of those wins was a 31-3 victory here in October 2004. But the Raiders avenged that with a 25-24 win at Denver last November 28.
After the Broncos beat Philadelphia, 49-21, in their last game on October 30, Shanahan saluted his team for finishing 6-2 in the first half of the season.

"You guys did a terrific job," Shanahan said to his team. "Now we have to get ready to start the second half and our first game will be against my favorite team - the Raiders."

Jake Plummer passed for three touchdowns and the Broncos rushed for 254 yards in the win here last year.

The Broncos were on the verge of sweeping the series again, but the Raiders rallied from an 11-point fourth-quarter deficit and then Langston Walker blocked Jason Elam's 43-yard field goal in the final seconds to preserve a 25-24 win for the Raiders in a game played in a driving snowstorm.

On 4th-and-goal from the Denver 5, Kerry Collins found Jerry Porter over the middle for a touchdown with 1:48 left, giving the Raiders the lead. Collins threw for 339 yards and four touchdowns with two interceptions.

Porter victimized Pro Bowl cornerback Champ Bailey for much of the night, catching six passes for 135 yards and three touchdowns.

Last week, the Raiders suffered a heartbreaking loss of their own, falling at Kansas City, 27-23. With five seconds left and no timeouts remaining, Larry Johnson (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=6363) scored on a one-yard run for the Chiefs.

The Raiders had rallied from a 20-9 deficit as Collins passed for two fourth-quarter touchdowns. Collins hit Porter with a four-yard touchdown pass with 10:31 left to pull the Raiders within 20-15, but misfired on a throw intended for Porter on the two-point conversion.

After a three-and-out by the Chiefs, Collins directed a 14-play, 82-yard drive which he capped with a seven-yard touchdown pass to Randy Moss (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=4262) with 1:45 remaining. It was the first catch of the day for Moss, who has been hobbled with knee and ankle injuries.

Plummer and Collins have each passed for 12 touchdowns with three interceptions this season.

Denver has two running backs over 500 yards in Mike Anderson (604) and Tatum Bell (562) while LaMont Jordan leads the Raiders with 592 rushing yards.

Matchup to watch: Broncos Pro Bowl center Tom Nalen faces nose tackle Ted Washington.

Series: Oakland leads, 53-35-2.

Next week: Denver hosts NY Jets, November 20; Oakland visits Washington, November 20
