Quick, name a Broncos linebacker. C'mon, no dillydallying! Al Wilson, you say? OK, but it took you long enough. What about the two outside guys? Yes, Ian Gold is one. And the other is D.J. Williams. They may not be as famous as Ray Lewis and Tedy Bruschi, but they form a linebacker unit that might be the best in the league.
Wilson, Gold and Williams are cut from the same mold. They fly all over the field. They're strong in pass coverage, and all three can blitz. They love to play the game, and they're a joy to watch. They're also the best part of a defense that is playing well despite some drastic changes since last year.
The Broncos took some heat for rebuilding their line with four castoffs from Cleveland, including former first-round draft picks Courtney Brown and Gerard Warren. They're not getting many sacks, but they're getting plenty of hits on the quarterback -- which can be just as effective. Combine them with Trevor Pryce, who missed most of last season with a back injury, and the line is as strong and deep as it has been in years.
Many were skeptical of the Broncos at draft time, too, when they used their first three picks on cornerbacks. Well, with Champ Bailey ailing and Lenny Walls hurt and no longer in the team's plans, two of the rookies, Darrent Williams and Domonique Foxworth, have started games and are getting up to speed quickly. It was Foxworth's end zone interception of a Donovan McNabb pass that halted Philadelphia's comeback bid in Week 8.
Coordinator Larry Coyer is doing some interesting things with the defense. On one play against Philadelphia, he had his cornerbacks press the Eagles' two receivers while the other nine players all were within two yards of the line. I'd never seen a defense crowd the line that tight before. Coyer blitzed like crazy in the first half, then backed off in the second half. He's good at showing different looks so offenses have a hard time getting a bead on what the defense is doing.
I have concerns about Denver. It has had trouble closing out games, Bailey isn't healthy, and it has struggled offensively on third down. But the defense is stout, quarterback Jake Plummer never has been better, and the running game is in high gear. With the toughest part of their schedule behind them, the Broncos are a team to be feared in the AFC.

It IS strange that Denver has only 10 sacks, is a +9 in the give away/take away, that they are doing better on offense (#3) than on defense (#22). I thought at the beginning of the year that the O-line would be the weak link. I was wrong. I thought the O-line was too small to get the job done. I thought there were far too few talented players in the corp and at least one (Coop) that shouldn't be a starter. I was wrong!
What IS funny is that they're better than KC in ALL of those categories including win/loss. Before Bob has a cow, ALL except sacks.
It is strange is seeing KC's O-line struggle to get players on the field. A position that they've been dominant for a decade or more. It's strange to think that Priests' career might be over. Although I thought that might be the case a year or two ago.
What is funny is seeing thier fans reaction to "your _efense sucks" because it's been bad for years and years. Shoot the messenger, I guess.

That was an excellent, knowledgable and accurate story . . .
Aikman is my favorite color guy anywhere - he did the Eagles game (or was it the Redskins game?) and was freaking SPOT ON with every bit of info. Too bad he was teamed with a stooge on PBP - I think it was Criqui, although that's not his regular partner.
Whoever the idiot was, he hadn't read a single word about Denver - he called Cecil Sapp "Sean Considine" TWICE! (Considine is Philly's #37).
He also said the Denver defense was "playing well - even though no names jump out at you." Yeah - only FIVE first-round picks on the D-Line, including the #1 overall pick 5 years ago - plus maybe the best known CB and best-known safety in the league.
Anybody remember who that guy was?

Unlike Bob I don't find the Donks having only 10 sacks humorous at all. Yes the pass rush has been more consistent (at times) this year, but there is something to be said for not only putting the quarterback on his ass, but putting him there while he still has the ball.
The lost yardage helps win the field position battle, and gives the defense a better chance of getting off the field quickly. I still think that while this defense is athletic, and has moments of looking great...they still give too much away without making the offense (seemingly) work for it.

The sacks have gotta start coming soon - the law of averages. And I think Courtney Brown should be getting more pressure soon, too - he makes some big plays (esp. fum recoverys - he has 2 or 3) but where is his QB pressure so far?

Boob - you're getting yourself in pretty deep here. I, for one, wouldn't trade the Denver Defense for ANY defense in the league - no matter how many sacks we have or don't have (I wouldda thought we had less than ten, actually).
Besides, Vermeil said your QB was pounded so bad on MNF last month, he almost took himself out a couple of times.
HERE'S THE SCOOP: Teams gameplan vs. the Coyer "Blitz-o-Mania": Quick patterns, screens and hot reads. That translates into fewer sacks. The blitzes work AGAINST sacks.

I didn't say your pass rush sucked. I said I found it humorous. But continue to deflect, it's what you're best at!

I will accept this bet with the stipulation you wait until the day before the game in December. I don't want to lose because Trent Green breaks his leg against Buffalo.
Who's to say that BVP isn't starting at Arrowhead Bob?
God I hope that doesn't happen *knock on wood*

I'll wager $500 you can't hold the Raiders under 300 yards like we did. How you like them apples?
Why? Denver held the Chiefs under 300 yards. We still have two chances to do the same to the Raiders. Are they better than the Chiefs?

I think they match up better against Denver, yes. Plus, it's in Oakland.

I see. I thought you were saying "like we did" meaning 1 out of 2 times, the Chiefs held the Raiders under 300. I thought home games counted because you didn't hold the Raiders under 300 in Oakland.

How do they match up better? Their offense against our defense is a tougher match for them than their offense vrs your defense.
Their defense against our offense opposed to their defense against your offense is probably close to a wash.
So how exactly do they match up better against us than you?

1. Their O-line has played better than ours this season.
2. They have the downfield threats in the passing game that we don't.
3. They have a pass rush.

If your crap defense can limit their points, ours is gonna demolish them.

One would think so. But that game was at Arrowhead.
Maybe it's time for you to accept that KC's defense is capable of putting on a better show during a given game than Denver's.
I don't think there's any way you hold Oakland to 263 yards or less.
MrPeepers

If KC Can hold Oak to 263 yards there is most definately potential for Denver to do that. If you want to argue as to who is more likely, Denver is. KC's defense has had a couple games with good looking D, but it isn't consistant.
KC's Defense is like dating that slutty girl in high school, as much as you want her to be normal and faithful, she's still a slut. Denver has as good a chance or better than KC of holding any team to fewer yards.

How bout this stat boob.
Moss 5catches 127yards 1TD 64lg
You think Denver will keep Moss under those numbers?
And yes, that is from the KC game AT Oakland.
It's funny how you waited till now to talk this smack. You sure as hell wasn't wanting to make this bet about total yardage given up after KCs game IN Oakland.

No, but I was talking smack about holding them to 17.

Well, look at it this way, Bob..You don't half to worry about the Chefs choking in the playoffs this year-they got a head start and did it during the early part of the season to avoid the Christmas rush.

Kinda like how that last second victory you had over Oakland in your own house has you thinking your team and defense is better than they really are.

It has to be hard to be a chefs fan...Knowing that , while the playoffs is a possible destination, that in the end, you'll just be disappointed again. That the mediocre receivers just can't get the job done, and that like death and taxes, the inevitable Dick Vermeil sob-fest that is his post-game press conference will be full of excuses when they lose AGAIN. I know, I know, the Broncos haven't won a playoff game etc...Better to be a has-been than a never was. The chefs haven't sniffed a Superbowl since before I was born, and likely won't until long after I kick off..

The Raiders and Chiefs games are usually close, no matter the records. I'm not sure you have a point.
Based on what I'm hearing though, Denver should be stomping a mudhole in Oakland come Sunday. Otherwise you'll have some crow to eat.

Yes they should be stomping a mudhole in Oaklands butt. I will be very dissapointed if Denver doesn't. I look at the game last year in Oakland and what Denver did to them with a Denver team that I believe wasn't as good as this one is.

Are you seriously crediting the officials with giving KC the game?
You've said it before. KC wins because they are lucky, Denver wins because they are good. You also admitted the tripping penalty was a bad call.

That doesn't mean the Chiefs didn't have bad calls go against them.
And I was kidding. To assume that KC only wins because they are lucky is just ludicrous. I suppose you think everytime Denver loses it was because of the officials or "luck." :kiddingme

No just pointing out that you willingly admitted that the Queefs win because of help from the referees, at least in the case of the Fade game. It's your words not mine.
