View Full Version : Denver's pass defense

The sportswriters ALL list the passing yards given up by Denver as a sign of a "weak" pass defense....but maybe a few other stats have to be looked at.

The overall pass-d ranking (29th in the league) looks terrible...giving up 245 yards per game. But after reading the DP article today http://www.denverpost.com/broncos/ci_3199607, where teams are passing more on Denver than any other team, you have to consider more of the picture than just a "passing yards allowed" stat.

Buffalo leads the league in pass D at 155 yards....but teams have attempted only 203 passes against them....while teams have passed 312 times against Denver. San Diego has the second highest passes attempted against them but ranks one spot lower than denver in pass defense (giving up more overall yards).

The one statline that sportswrites are missing is that Denver's (defense) pass completed percentage is the third lowest in the league. Dallas, Tampa Bay, Denver and Washington all allow less than 55% completion percentage.

Anyways, Klis writes a good article on this, IMO.

People pass on us because they can't run on us. People were saying in week 3 that the Chargers need to run LT more.....they tried in week 2 against us but they abandoned it. Why? Because they couldn't run.

Great find, Darkhorse.

It really is amazing how little research media members usually do when they put together articles. It's like they expect the football massess to be a bunch of idiots that are more interested in soap operas than legit observations. Either that or they and their editors think that they can get away with being lazy. Ree-dic-u-lous.

I think that there could be a stat that better defines a pass defense than passing yards against and rushing yards against. There could also be a better defining statistic for total defense instead of using yards against and points against. Maybe I'll put a little work into that and get back to you guys.

It just seems so simple, "just run the ball" But THEY CANT!!!! LOL

Also in every game we have taken a bug lead and have forced teams to abandon the run. And the main reason teams are getting ANY rushing yards on us is they do surprise draws that gain 5-7 at a time.

Not to mention they're probably getting lalot of their passing yards in the later stages of the game when we have a double digit lead and our D starts to let them back in the game.

Exactly right! I'd like to see a quarter-by-quarter breakdown of these stats, too.

Great find, DarkHorse30. Here's the graphic from your story:
