Droughns may end Browns' drought
Running back needs to average 44 yards a game to pass 1,000
By Sean McClelland
Dayton Daily News
BEREA — If only because of their names, Karim Abdul-Jabbar and Ben Gay are the most intriguing of all the running backs to carry a football for the Cleveland Browns in the past two decades.
All have one thing in common: not a single 1,000-yard season.
Yes, the franchise disappeared for three years. So it's really been "only" 16 actual seasons of futility — 16 seasons in which no Cleveland ballcarrier has managed to average at least 62.5 yards over 16 games.
Mention this to Reuben Droughns, who is on pace to end the NFL's longest such drought, and a quizzical expression replaces his permanent smile, as if there must be some mistake, as if he's John Madden and the "Immaculate Reception" has just occurred.
"I try not to worry about it," Droughns said of the historical trend he is on the verge of bucking. "If it comes, it comes. If it means we're winning, it means a lot. I would rather win than get 1,000."
Hard to believe, really. Especially in Cleveland, where the tradition of running backs — Marion Motley, Jim Brown, Leroy Kelly, Greg Pruitt, Mike Pruitt — is perhaps unmatched. In training camp last summer, someone asked Brown about this phenomenon. He chuckled and said, "I don't know. A thousand yards isn't that hard."
Since 1985, when Kevin Mack gained 1,104 and Earnest Byner 1,002, the Browns' leading rushers have been Mack (five times), William Green (twice), Leroy Hoard (twice), Lee Suggs, James Jackson, Travis Prentice, Terry Kirby, Eric Metcalf, Byner and "Touchdown Tommy" Vardell.
Hoard got close with 890 yards in 1994. Green had 887 as a rookie in 2002 before he fell apart.
Droughns, who powered a 20-14 victory Sunday over Tennessee with 116 yards on 20 carries, needs only to average 44 yards over the final eight games to reach 1,000. Nobody's ready to pop the champagne just yet.
"You never know how the rest of the year's going to go," Browns coach Romeo Crennel cautioned. "I'm of the mind to wait and see how it goes."
Once a benchmark, 1,000 yards in today's NFL is about as common as ice in winter. League leaders routinely amass 1,600 or more.
The drought began under Marty Schottenheimer, then continued through the Bud Carson and Bill Belichick regimes. When the expansion Browns were born, Kirby became the feature back by default. Not until 2002 (Green) did the new Browns draft a running back in the first round. Third-rounders such as Prentice and Jackson contributed briefly but washed out over the long haul.
Butch Davis potentially could have ended the drought by drafting either Clinton Portis or LaDainian Tomlinson. Alas, he passed on both.
No stranger to this statistical strata, Droughns piled up 1,240 yards in Denver last season while still carrying the weight of a fullback. The Broncos, who churn out 1,000-yard backs as if they had an assembly line, were so impressed with Droughns that they traded him to Cleveland in March for middling defensive linemen Ebenezer Ekuban and Michael Myers.
Crennel was asked if it was "mind-boggling" that a franchise could go this long without a 1,000-yard rusher. You know he wanted to say yes. He instead laughed and said, "I have no idea about that. I mean, hey, I wasn't here. A team is what it is."

I'm wondering under what conditions fans will boo a player, since I was confused about the boo's for portis I heard on TV. Droughns was in a similar position with the Broncos, so I figured I'd ask. Sorry that makes you so angry.

Portis tried to hold the team for ransom, Mike dumped him for Champ and proved by letting Droughns run for 1,200 yards that yes indeed it is the system more than the RB.....being a talented RB like Portis and Davis means getting 1,500-2,000 yards, but any Joe WhotheHell can run for 1,000 yards in Denver. We've run the ball every year since '95 regardless of who we line up in the backfield and (for guys like TJ) regardless of who our OL coach is.
The boo's you heard for Portis were more than likely the fans who realized he plays for the Redskins now....and when you wear a different uniform and left on not so cordial terms...it should be expected.

Oh here we go again.... I guess the only reason Mock has a problem with Blart isn't because Blart posts some of the most incredulous crap, or because he's obviously trying to stir the pot...it can only be because Mock's a homophobe, right?
Just like the only possible reason anyone would criticize a black person is because they're racist....

how is averaging 62.5 yards per game (1000 yards over 16 games) a feat worth recognizing again?

Getting a DUI shouldn't get you labeled as classless...stupid, YES. Anybody reading this is drunk or has been drunk/impaired and behind the wheel...I would guess that true for 95%+. Hopefully, nothing bad happens and they learn the painless way...a DUI, a scare, a single car wreck were they walk away.
Many of us are or have been stupid. Failing to respect others and do something about it, is classless.
Getting back to Droughns, I thought he was a class act while at Denver. He asked for a trade knowing that he would moved back to FB. He was right to ask for a trade and both side won in that deal. Boo?? Why?? He has roughly the same yardage this year as Bell, Anderson, and L. Jordan. He do fine and hasn't received the pub of any of them.
I'm a bit surprised for how much respect is given to Jordan. Given that they're a team that has so many offensive weapons and a balanced attack...blah, blah...And yet, despite that, he is projected to clear less then 1200 yards this season.
What TEAM isn't projected to make 1000 yards?? Philly

Considering we might have TWO backs get over 1000 each I don't know if this deserves a headline...
The real headline should be about Thunder and Lightning....
People that bash our front office don't realized we have done a much better job in the past few years...Sundquist has done well..
Berry was out of football...He made all Pro...Droughns was on the street and out of football...He passed waivers and was on the street...you first have to go thru a pecking order and if noone wants you, you land at the curb...both were on the curb, "will work for food"...
Now Berry is a Pro-Bowler and Droughns got his pudding....that says we aren't that bad...but the media loved to talk about MoC and the Browncos...
All I ask is that you make 2/3 good choices...I think they have passed...the 2002 draft was horrific, but since then we have done better.

That's bull****. I think the fans and the FO know what he did for this team. The guy was pure heart and he wanted an opportunity to start. It wasn't going to happen here so Denver traded him to a franchise where he would have that chance, and we picked up depth in an area of need. Droughns is the anti-Portis. I wish him the best unless he's playing against us.

That is another uninformed line of crap.
Droughns almost held out...what he is looking for is a decent contract...he's not asking for a T.O. contract...but he reported and is giving his best...he is a better than average RB...that's it...
If he gets kicked tho the curb by Cleveland. I bet the Broncos just might have a place for him again...
R.D. wasn't making close to what T.O. was...not even in fractions...So T.O. can kiss my ass. At least Droughns knows he's under contract.

Dammit...I wasn't loud enough, then...Hilarious!
I booed Portis the first couple of times he carried the ball. After that, I decided to boo him every time he touched the ball. It just became a fun thing for me to do while shivering in the wet weather. It was a sport to me, kind of like when I used to neg rep Bob.Ha!
I don't hate Portis and I don't hate Droughns. I hope he does go over 1,000 yards. Romeo Crennell needs something to go his way this year, for once...

Actually the standard should be 71.5 yards per game as that was what you had to attain to reach 1000 in a 14 game season....which would put one @ 1144 for a 16 game season.

so tell me clown, if you're not labeling someone as a racist, why did you put "criticizing" in quotation marks? Bart gets blasted because he posts some pretty stupid crap, not because he's a flaming homo.
in fact nobody would have known he was a flaming homo except he had to post an "I'm a homo, have pity on me" thread because his homo avatar caught alot of flak.
If you're a Bronco player, and you screw up....then you will get blasted by me. White, black, hispanic, asian, other.....doesn't matter. But there is a faction on here like yourself who believes the only motivation for criticizing a black player or a gay poster is because of deep seeded hatred for them the critical poster must have. So tell me, if a black member of the mane bitches about Jake, does that make him a racist as well?
