Former Oakland Raiders kicker Cole Ford is shown in this Nov. 3, 2004 handout photo from the Las Vegas Police Department. The bright lights of the gridiron have faded for former Oakland Raiders kicker Cole Ford, and he has fallen further than anyone could imagine _ he's in a mental institution, and he faces 27 years in prison if convicted of a bizarre shooting. It's a testament of how cruel professional sports can be. For every one successful post NFL stories like Elway, there are 10 stories of those players like Cole Ford who end up in jail or homeless. Going against my intial desire to slam a Fader, past or present, I can't caption that. It is just a bad story all around.

It's just sad.

I hear Barret Robbins isn't doing so well these days, either.

On yet another sad note:

Former NFL defensive back Darryll Lewis, a former University of Arizona All-American, was arrested after leading police on a 30-minute chase that ended with five officers forcefully dragging him to the ground, Los Angeles authorities said Tuesday. Lewis, 36, was arrested Monday for investigation of evading arrest, driving under the influence, possession of a controlled substance and resisting arrest. He was being held on $75,000 bail and was scheduled to be arraigned today. Lewis was drafted out of Arizona in the second round of the 1991 NFL draft by the then-Houston Oilers. He played for the Oilers from 1991-98 and was chosen to play in the Pro Bowl after the 1995 season. He spent two seasons with the San Diego Chargers, but was released by the Denver Broncos in 2001.

Out of embarrassment Cole Ford has went to extreme measures to conceal his former identity and the fact that he actually played for the Raiders.
