View Full Version : FWIW : Rumors has Priest Holmes with career ending injury?...placed on IR

According to some local KC stations, Priest has a golf ball size lump on his spine. I hate to see him go out like this, but if so , so be it. A mans health is always above the game.
Again, FWIW, nothing official as of yet.

Well, the top story on NBC Action News just 10 minutes ago was on this topic. Jack Harry, Sports Director for that station reported that he spoke with two higher sources within the Chiefs organization and they have said that Priest Holmes indeed may retire as early as tomorrow.
In Florida today, Holmes was getting a 3rd opinion on the hit he took from SD DE Shawn Merriman two weeks ago. Apparently what has been found is a lump on or within Priest's spine and if he were to take one more big hit, he would face certain paralysis.
This connects the dots on traveling the country getting checked out and now there are at least two people who are telling the same story. I am going to post this to the blogger as rumor and cite the Kansas CIty NBC Affiliate.
Tomorrow evening he is set to be on Kevin Kietzman's show on Sports Radio 810 WHB, the ESPN affiliate in KC. You may want to listen in tomorrow online all day to see what breaks

Well, pretty much everyone railed on King Carl at the time and for a couple years after the fact, but it now appears that the selection of LJ may save the Chiefs season if in fact Priest does retire.

Well, even if it's the size of a marble, that's not happening...I don't want to see him go out like SuperMan Reeves.
He is a fine player, but so was Griffith...sometimes you cheat the devil, sometimes the devil cheats you.
Thanks for making me lose my hair Priest...the guy came back again and again and again all the way from back in Texas...he has nothing left to prove.

I can feel sympathy for Priest Holmes and still think the typical KC fan is a schmuck. I am capable of separating the two quite nicely.
I admire Priest Holmes. He was basically thrown on the junk heap at one point, and ended up with a great career. He seems smart enough to put football into perspective, as it pertains to what is hopefully another fifty years of life.

Much respect and admiration from a Broncos fan and a football fan. Priest may have been a damn dirty Chief in our minds, but he is a fantastic player worthy of saluting in our hearts.
If he is indeed done, at least he had an amazing career and nearly single-handedly brought back exciting football to the Chief franchise. Here's to one of the games great ones. Salute!

He just signed a contract last year or the year before didn't he?? I imagine the cap hit is going to be pretty big. Of course instead of retiring the could just keep him on the injury list and pay his salary depending on whether or not they want to absorb the cap hit.

Insiders at Arrowhead Stadium tell NBC Action News Sports Director Jack Harry that Priest Holmes, very possibly, has played his final game in a Chiefs uniform. One highly placed source tells Harry, Holmes could announce his retirement as soon as Thursday.
The 32 year old running back arrived back in town Tuesday night from Miami after undergoing some extensive testing on his spine. Doctors reportedly found a lump and should Holmes take a severe hit, he could become paralyzed. At his weekly press conference Tuesday, head coach Dick Vermeil indicated he didn't really know what was going on with Holmes.
Holmes has already undergone three knee-surgeries. He has failed to finish two of the last 3 seasons. He suffered the head injury in the San Diego game, and has now learned of this latest problem with his spine

That's not good to hear. I don't follow college football so I really don't get to see what kind of athletic abilities or disabilities that these players come into the league with. As far as i'm concerned it's a clean slate from college to the "real" game - and superstars in college have more often than not, turned into a lot of nothing in the Pros.
Hope your take on Johnson is wrong LOL

LJ does get crushed in backfield a lot more than priest ever did. He has more break away speed but priest had rare vision & a brusing running style & could get something out of nothing where as LJ sees a rush coming & craps down his leg.

I wish I could agree with you. Remember hes had limited starts/carries todate. He will get more comfortable with the Oline and I see him as a pro-bowl player next season. Priest was the ultimate in pateince and following his blockers. Tony Richardson is the man in that backfield that deserves a lot of the credit. Priest rode his tail for many yards. Priest was a smart runner. LJ is quick to the seam and once he gets to the second level, he's usually on his own. LJ will only get better unfortuntely.

LJ is a good back. Like Bell, he could stand a lot of improvemment as a receiver. And he's not as potent on the perimeter as Holmes was. But he's a good solid power runner.
The Chiefs bigger problem right now is probably the offensive line. Age and injuries are starting to take their toll.
And that defense still has some serious issues.

Definitely a big unknown....Since he was only the feature back for just one season in college and yet to be a full time feature back for a full season in the NFL. The good news is his body hasn't taken no where near the pounding that most would have by his age but we won't know if he is durable over the long haul for a while.

I don't know about injuries, but he has a fairly upright running style that can result in a stripped ball now and then.
I really think the bigger problem will be in the passing game.
With all the problems on the line, Gonzales has been used as more of a blocker this year. That didn't hurt the Chiefs too badly, since Holmes effectively became the #2 receiver.
But I don't think LJ brings the same dimension. So the Chiefs are probably going to have to make greater use of Gonzo in the passing game and let the chips fall where they may with that O-Line.

Not by choice but they could have their hands full coming up with Alexander money...Just ponied up heavy for Walter Jones and Hass before this season so it probably won't be a slam dunk that they will be able to pay him. My guess is they will certainly try to keep him and the fact they have a gentlemens agreement with Alexander that they won't tag him again increases the chances that Hutch could get the tag.

That is why he has a long of 46 this year? I don't see anything special in this guy. he gets caught too many times behind the line & with out someone to share the load I bet he wears down in games. He has not proven to me to get stronger in games sure he had a long pass reception late against the Faid but I could have ran that far if left uncoverd also, the TD was all his Oline blocking. Chefs now need Oline help & need to Draft another HB! Plus remake their WEAK D!

Jay Glazer, of FOXSports.com, reports Kansas City Chiefs RB Priest Holmes (head, shoulder) will be placed on Injured Reserve Wednesday, Nov. 9. Holmes will be re-evaluated by team doctors in 30 days. Team officials have said that a report that Holmes would retire as early as Wednesday is false.

STORM BREWING BETWEEN HOLMES, CHIEFS?
With rumors and reports now rampant regarding the future of Chiefs running back Priest Holmes, we've confirmed that there is indeed a very real question as to whether Holmes will ever play again, even as the team dismisses the notion that Priest might be done.
Based on what we're hearing, we also think that the situation could get very ugly, very quickly.
The organization believes that there's nothing wrong with Holmes' back, and that his absence traces to a head injury suffered at San Diego. Still, the specialist Holmes saw on Friday isn't a neurologist, but a back and neck guy.
Despite what the team is saying, we hear that Holmes is telling teammates that he won't play again this year, and we're also told that the organization quietly is preparing for life without him.
If Holmes retires, look for the team to try to recover a big chunk of the $10.1 signing/option bonus he received in connection with a 2003 contract extension, which ties him to the Chiefs through 2009. His better course of action, in our view, would be to obtain medical certification regarding his inability to play if, as reported, he has a lump on his spine that could lead to serious injury.
Things will get interesting, of course, if the Chiefs' doctors say he's fit play and Holmes' own physicians conclude otherwise.
And there's a twist that could make the situation even more problematic for all parties. Holmes, we hear, blames his current health condition on coach Dick Vermeil's relentless approach to practices, which is burning Holmes out.
So, in the end, Holmes could walk away not because of any health concern, but simply because he's had enough of Dickie Ball.
Stay tuned.

Nice comment, dick. You must be a kid b/c no one of any maturity would make a joke of this of all things. At least you can revel in your masked homophobia and worry about taking on extra inches.
Diving on your head does have to cause some kind of spinal/head trauma after a while. I admit to being baited by Boob but the comment was not directed to Priest but to Boob's posts precending them. He was making a big deal about... you read the thread....

If anyone ISN'T a quitter it's Priest...just because he's not blind and denying he's near his twilight doesn't mean squat. And just because he made the comment that RB's in the NFL are 22, not 32 doesn't either.

"So you're the guys who rip everybody, right?"
That question didn't come from Dolphins coach Nick Saban, but from Team Security Investigator Stu Weinstein, who was stationed outside Grand Ballroom #1 at the Pittsburgh Marriott City Center on Friday afternoon while Saban attended a production meeting for the television and radio coverage of Miami's preseason game against the Steelers.

If he goes on IR he is done for year. All that is left for him to review is if he will retire this year or try to come back next year. If it is only a bruise he should be back but if Chefs screw up his deal & cut him what team will want an old (for his pos) RB with back problems? Chefs will have other turn over anyway as I don't see Vermin-eel sticking around another year. A new coach will want his own guys anyway.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Kansas City Chiefs running back Priest Holmes will miss the rest of the season after consulting with three experts on spinal-injuries.

Priest bows to injury
Kansas City Chiefs head coach Dick Vermeil reacts to losing star running back Priest Holmes for the rest of the year.
A helmet-to-helmet blow he absorbed on Oct. 30 against San Diego was the most recent problem for the 32-year-old running back. But coach Dick Vermeil said Wednesday signs of trouble first showed up when Holmes developed tingling in his hands during training camp.
Holmes, 32, a three-time Pro Bowler whose 66 touchdowns between 2002-2004 are an NFL record for any three-year span, was placed on injured reserve. Doctors had recommended he avoid any contact at all for a minimum of 30 days.
He is not incapacitated and no surgery is planned, said general manager Carl Peterson.
Priest Holmes will not play again for Kansas City this season. (Brian Bahr / Getty Images)
"It's a head trauma and a neck trauma that has affected the cervical area of his spine," Peterson said. "But he's not incapacitated. There's no reason for surgery."
A statement from Dr. Jon Browne, the Chiefs' team physician, said no permanent damage had occurred either to the head or neck and that Holmes would be re-evaluated in 30 days.
Peterson also said doctors were not concerned about the possibility of paralysis should Holmes continue playing, and that Holmes indicated he planned to resume his career next season.
Injuries have caused the Chiefs' career rushing leader to cut short two of his last three seasons. But he has shown flashes of his old self while rushing for 451 yards and six touchdowns on 119 carries. He also has 21 catches for 197 yards, including a 60-yard catch-and-run for a touchdown in a victory over Washington on Oct. 16.
"We're going to miss him," coach Dick Vermeil said. "He's more than a football player for this organization."
Vermeil said there seemed no reason for undue concern when Holmes experienced the tingling in training camp.
"We did know he started getting what we say 'burners' once in a while, a tingling in his fingers from some hits, which are very, very common," Vermeil said. "Guys get burners in the first quarter and play the rest of the game. But he had never experienced that in his career.
"Then I think the blow to the head in San Diego stimulated more concern. It wasn't a true concussion, but he did get knocked dizzy."
The Chiefs will now turn to Holmes' backup, Larry Johnson, who has averaged 5.2 yards per carry, with 506 yards on 97 attempts. Johnson had two touchdowns in the 27-23 victory Sunday over Oakland, including a 1-yard vault on the final play of the game. He has frequently complained he was not being given enough carries. Johnson rushed for 541 yards and nine touchdowns while Holmes sat out the final six games last year.
"Larry Johnson has already carried the load. He knows he can do it," Vermeil said. "He just doesn't have a Priest Holmes backing him up like he backed up Priest Holmes."
Holmes missed last week's game against Oakland and in the past two weeks has seen spinal-injury specialists in California and Florida. Speculation had been rampant he would be out for an extended period, although the Chiefs (5-3) said they were hopeful he would soon return to the lineup.
"We're going to miss him," said defensive end Jared Allen. "We love him. But he's got to do what's best for him personally. Head injuries can be tricky things."
Earlier Wednesday, the team denied the injury would lead to Holmes' retirement. Television station KSHB reported Wednesday that doctors found a lump on Holmes' spine and were concerned about possible paralysis should he take a direct hit. Citing a highly placed source it didn't identify, the station said Holmes could announce his retirement as soon as Thursday.
But both the team and an employee at the firm run by Holmes' agent, Todd France, rejected suggestions Holmes would retire because of the injury.
"All the speculation, television, the media throwing things out all shook him up," Vermeil said of Holmes. "Someone said he had a tumor on his spine. He thought it was very unfair."
Well that sucks........I hate to see this even when it's a division rival.

Actually, the information you are refering to was submitted by a bronco fan in a previous post. The meat of the point was that from the time the Chiefs won the Superbowl, until the Broncos finally won, there was a huge chunk of history passing by.

Yeah but you guys had to cheat. That dont count.
The most memberable SB the Broncos have ever been a part of, the score was 55-10.
But hey, at least you didn't cheat.
Really? We cheated to appear in more Superbowls than the Chiefs? Last i checked, we had been to 4 before the 'cheating' took place, no? What's your excuse now?

55-10 is disappearing.
The Bills have been to 4 SBs? Congratulations, you were the Bills until you cheated. The difference is the Bills went to 4 straight. But then the Broncos own the record for the worst ass whipping in SB history.
You should be proud.
If it makes you feel any better, I would buy a SB too if it only cost me a couple million dollars and a couple 3rd rounders.

Whatever it takes to make you feel good about rooting for your loser team. Maybe you can get Marty back when Dick Vermin-eel retires so he can fake another punt & the Broncos can advance to the AFC Championship game again.

When i saw the movie it really hit me who i had really meet, also my father in law was one of those peeps in the control room.
That is awesome, can I buy that man a beer? Getting a man to the moon is one thing but bringing back a crippled ship was really something with no rescue options!
