SEC - Poor Alabama, they are ranked 3rd in the nation and have the biggest bullseye on them in the entire country. Why? Because it seems as most people have conceded defeat to both USC and Texas this year as they will go undefeated this year and meet for the title, so now the focus is turned to what each team needs to gain in the polls, with Alabama being #3 makes them enemy #1. I'll get to the BCS in a minute but I'm just going to say that Alabama better find an offense or else they're going to make some BCS enthusiast very happy this year.
Big news from the ACC is Miami over Virginia Tech, and now finally Miami is getting that publicity that they deserve. My rant last week touched on how the Canes were receiving no national attention for the year that they are having, now they sit at 4th in the nation, atop the ACC, and will be in the drivers seat for the national title if 2 of the top 3 schools do infact lose. Losers of the week though go to the Boston College Golden Eagles, who absolutely looked terrible against the North Carolina Tar Heels. It all started with an opening kickoff return by the Hells, and the Eagles looked out of it from then on. They dropped from #19 in the polls to having the big NR next to their name, that means that the voters saw exactly what I saw, a team that got down early and wasn't hungry enough to battle back in win it.
Congrats to JoePa and the Penn State Nittany Lions, who should be crowned big 10 champs in 2 weeks. The sole roadblock for them is the Michigan State Spartans, who just came off a loss to the most dissapointing, overrated team in the entire nation, the Purdue Boilermakers. Love them or hate them, you gotta dig what Penn State has doen this year, that freshman class has really bought into what Paterno is all about and Michael Robinson have teammates that believe in him...the playmakers are endless for this team. The Big 10 may be Ohio State and Michigan's world, but seeing a team like Penn State pop up back to greatness is a very welcoming site to see. While we're on the Big 10, I'm going to take this chance to absolutely rip the team that is now challenging Purdue as the most dissapointing, overrated team this year, the Iowa Hawkeyes. #10 in the nation, and they are 5-4. And it's not all about their losses, it's the way they have lost them. 2 weeks ago at Michigan they had a big chance to make a statement and say"Yes we aren't the 1oth best team in the nation like many have thought, but we're better than most think now," and they lose in OT. Last week was the choke of the year, 27-14 over Northwestern with under 3 minutes to go in the game, and Northwestern scores a TD, recoveres the onside kick, and scores another TD to win it 28-27. Kirk Ferentz is a great coach, but it goes to show that if you have players that aren't willing to play the entire game, that it doesnt matter who's on the sidelines calling those plays.
