43 = $1.05 trillion; All previous presidents = $1.01 trillion

Bush is some kind of conservative. I wonder how this is going to impact our foreign policy over the next decade? Is there another war in our future - but with our creditor? Will the US people have to choose between being slaves or being rebels? Will we follow the path of post WW1 Germany and devalue our currency and essentially default on our loans? What is the ramifications of this type of debt? I'll bet you Alexander Hamilton had no idea a president would go to these extremes to stay elected.

President George W. Bush and the current administration have now borrowed more money from foreign governments and banks than the previous 42 U.S. presidents combined.

Throughout the first 224 years (1776-2000) of our nation’s history, 42 U.S. presidents borrowed a combined $1.01 trillion from foreign governments and financial institutions according to the U.S. Treasury Department. In the past four years alone (2001-2005), the Bush Administration has borrowed a staggering $1.05 trillion.

"The seriousness of this rapid and increasing financial vulnerability of our country can hardly be overstated,” said Rep. John Tanner (TN), a leader of the Blue Dog Coalition and member of the House Ways and Means Committee. “The financial mismanagement of our country by the Bush Administration should be of concern to all Americans, regardless of political persuasion.”

The Blue Dogs have long expressed tremendous concern over mounting U.S. debt and are particularly troubled by our growing dependence on foreign governments to finance our debt. Earlier this year, the Coalition offered a 12 Step Plan to cure our nation’s addiction to deficit spending. The Blue Dog plan required, among other things, that all federal agencies pass clean audits, a balanced budget, and the establishment of a rainy day fund to be used in the event of a natural disaster.

“No American political leadership has ever willfully and deliberately mortgaged our country to foreign interests in the manner we have witnessed over the past four years,” continued Rep. Tanner. “If this recklessness is not stopped, I truly believe our economic freedom as American citizens is in great jeopardy."

OK, I'm no Bush fan...but is this adjusted for inflation? That would make a difference. With that said, Bush is definately no fiscal conservative.

Um, when was the last time a liberal administration borrowed more money from foreign countries than all previous administrations combined?

Um, when was the last time a liberal administration borrowed more money from foreign countries than all previous administrations combined?

When was the last time a radical leftist like yourself, LABF (every bit of rhetoric you spout paints you as such) would listen to the "Blue Dog Coalition", which is composed of "moderate and conservative Democrats"?

Some interesting things about the BDC (from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_Dog_Democrats):

"[...]Democrats who identify with the Blue Dogs, on the other hand, tend to be social conservatives, but have differing positions on economic issues ranging from fiscal conservatism to economic populism. For example, most Blue Dogs are strong supporters of gun rights and get high ratings from the National Rifle Association, many have pro-life voting records, and some get high ratings from immigration reduction groups, which cannot be said for most members of the DLC. [...]"

LABF is just hopelessly confused.

I'm interested in correct facts being used correctly than in facts being manipulated and/or cherry-picked to support an agenda.

Why is this factoid useless by the way?

For one thing, it's not mentioned if the numbers given are corrected for inflation or use a constant base state. Also, I don't believe that merely adding up the annual budget deficits from 1776 to 2000 is relevant to much of anything. What would be more illuminating would be to plot the annual budget deficit in either constant dollars or as a fraction of GDP over the 1776-2004 period, to see if the current administration is such a strong departure from the past.

However, Wags, in figuring debt/gnp, I think to be closest to the nut, one has to also figure in the outstanding entitlements to the boomers.

Indeed. That figure is somewhere in the tens of trillions of dollars (unfunded, of course) and has to include Bush's geezer-pandering prescription drug "benefit".

I think that this past summer, the congress "cured" soc sec by limiting future increases to inflation rather than wages, so that's prolly ok, but as you pt out, medicare (and medicaid) are gonna be killers. I'm actually pretty concerned about that for mine and MRs Dog's later year. I'm considering working into my 70s for the healthcare issue, and shifting assets to my daughter's children, assuming she has some. She's only 10, so i'm just in the planning stage (-:
