From ESPN insider: (So I will not post the entire story)

Broncos summary:
Walls is tease- can run, has height and is young. Some other team will attempt to help him reach his potential, after clearing waivers.
Fat boy also writes:
“Walls, who requested his release, was moved in part by coach Mike Shanahan to send a not-so-subtle message to his first-place team as it entered its bye week. Plus, in rookies Darrent Williams and Domonique Foxworth, the Broncos seem to have finally hit on some young cornerbacks, after Shanahan posted a miserable track record at the position, striking out with past high-round choices such as Deltha O'Neal and Willie Middlebrooks. The performance of Williams and Foxworth in recent weeks certainly made Walls expendable.”
Nice dig???

Domonique Foxworth has more INT's halfway through his rookie season than Walls has in his career. Trevor Pryce also has more career INT's than Walls.

I still find it funny that media types have trouble seperating facts. Mike Shanahan has had a hard times finding CB's through the draft, True. However, Deltha O'Neal has six INT's to lead the NFL. Deltha did not fit at all in Denver with the scheme but is excelling in CIN's CB friendly scheme.
Willie Middlebrooks was a huge reach engineered by David Gibbs, and Shanahan missed the mark with another injured early round selection. Injuries more than on field performance killed Middlebrooks. Willie never really had Poor games like Deltha, he just did not have enough games period.
Same thing has held true with Walls as both the above. Walls has not been healthy since that initial season in 2003 like Willie. Then, like Deltha he just decided he was the starter and forgot to play like one. Then, the Injuries caught up to him again. Sayonara Walls-san.

I don't agree that Shanahan was "trying to send a message." That's BS. fear does not motivate those guys, but getting rid of a drag is a clear message of commitment to winning. I don't think the fellas from Cleveland will not enjoy the idea that the organization gets rid of drags. They had that problem in Cleveland, as I understand it.

Shanahan wasn't the only one who liked Middlebrooks. I spoke with Ozzie Newsome a few months back and he said they liked Middlebrooks a lot that year.

So did the Rams and I think another team who picked after Denver in the 1st. Denver wanted Archuleta who went to StL at #20, and the Rams wanted to take Willie at #29.
Middlebrooks would have been a 1st round pick that year even if Denver didn't take him.

I still like middlebrooks and wish we would have traded the shooting guard instead of him.

I like Middlebrooks too, but I think we are better off with our current situation then with him.

note also though that walls and herndon were undrafted free agent pickups.
he may have missed some corners in the draft prior to this year, but he also got alot of starts out of two guys that were left for dead.

Did anyone besides me think we could have traded him? I would have thought that at least one other team in the league might have given up a 5 or 6 for him. Maybe I'm wrong.

Well the trade deadline had already passed. Lenny was the one that asked for this. Perhaps he knew he had blew his chance here and has no shot of playing much anymore in Denver. It's a good move on his part cause some team that really needs a CB will pick him up and he will get a lot of playing time which is what he needs.

Maybe he asked for it but that doesn't mean we had to let him go.
If he had trade value I think we should have kept him on the team and traded him next year.

That is the thing, he has no trade value. He went undrafted and has shown that he can't do anything but not play the ball, miss tackles/not tackle, and stay hurt. We wouldn't have even got a candy bar for him.

I had started a thread about Trading Walls a few weeks back & got slammed. Would have liked to get a 7th rounder for him but sounds like no one was interested.

He will get another shot somewhere, but he isnt ever going to be that great. He cant turn his hips like a CB has to do, and that length he has doesnt do much if he cant find the ball.
Ive been a bug Lenny supporter and wanted him over Herndon, but good job by Shanny to cut his losses and swallow his pride. He has done this all year so far and it has been paying dividends.

I think Shanny feels he has enough young talent to work with like Paymah. Browner. Rock, Cox and he knew that he was not going to resign Walls. Why give a guy snaps in practice that could better serve the young guys? Still would have liked the depth but it sounds like he went into pout mode.

Its fairly common for people to become complacent in all lines of work, once they reach a certain goal. Nowhere is that attitude exposed more quickly than in the field of competitive athletics.
