Green misses another practice for Chiefs

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Coach Dick Vermeil raised the possibility Thursday that quarterback Trent Green may not start for Kansas City on Sunday against the Oakland Raiders.

Green was in St. Louis on Wednesday for funeral services for his father and was expected to return the next day and dive into game preparation. But Vermeil said Green also was absent from a practice on Thursday that was scaled-down, anyway, because of the injuries that have hit both the offense and defense.
Vermeil declined to address the question when asked if backup Todd Collins might start.

"I'm not going to say," he told reporters at his post-practice news conference.

Green has made a team-record 71 straight starts and been one of the most efficient passers in the league since coming over from St. Louis in a trade in 2001.

Jim Green died suddenly at the age of 58 on Oct. 27. Three days later, in a display of courage and professionalism that drew praise from both teams, his son had his best game of the year, throwing for 347 yards and two touchdowns against San Diego.

But Vermeil acknowledged he was concerned about Green trying to start against the Raiders after missing so much practice time this week.

"I'll have to talk with him about it," he said. "When he gets in, we'll discuss it."

The Chiefs run a complicated system that utilizes different shifts and motions, and even a veteran such as Green would have much to digest in just a couple of days.

"We aren't doing anything he hasn't done before within the offense. Now, he might not have done it the last two or three weeks or four weeks or whatever," Vermeil said.

"We have a huge volume of offense that's been coached all through the (offseason) and the minicamp and training camp that he's been involved in. I just want to see how he feels and then go from there."

In the meantime, many of Green's key teammates are hobbled and may not be ready for the Raiders. Left tackle Willie Roaf was downgraded from probable to questionable when he aggravated a hamstring injury that sidelined him for more than three games earlier this year.

Cornerback Patrick Surtain said he's only 50-50 because of a knee injury. And running back Priest Holmes was in California seeing a neurological specialist about the blow he took to the head last week that caused what was described as mild head trauma.

"They're not all out yet," Vermeil said.

I am still confused as to why Dick would say anything about holding TrINT out without talking to him 1st. After all DICK is such a "players" coach I would think he would wait until TrINT got back talked to him then went to media. Seems to me like DICK is using media to get TrINT back...just a thought.

Just pulled this off of the Sportsline Player Updates... I think they had some news a few weeks ago that was questioned by several, so I don't know how accurate it is?

Larry Johnson to start

Larry Johnson, RB KC

News: The Star reports Priest Holmes (head) missed practice on Thursday and is not expected to be active in Week 9. Larry Johnson will start in hia absence.

Analysis: Johnson now becomes a must-start against the Oakland Raiders in what should be a shootout.

Just read that both are gametime decisions... I'm guessing that's to throw off the Faid. Roaf aggrivated the same hammy from what I gather. I doubt he goes. Surtain is hampered by a bad knee... whether he goes or not isn't a big deal, the fact of the matter is if he does go he won't be 100% covering some pretty good WR's from Oakland.

Actually it seems to me that he's trying to give his team an excuse to fail. Holmes hurting and probably out. Roaf, Surtain same thing. He can use Green's absence as an excuse to hold him out from the game, lay an egg and not loose the team or the fans by blaming it on injuries and the death of a family member.

Green will play, but their troublesome spot isn't on offense. Surtain, probably their best offseason pickup, not playing should concern Chiefs fans...

Althou I think TrINT is a go using consecutive starts is a seriously stupid argument. Champ had quite a few and yes I know his injury would not let him go while TrINT is able to. Losing a parent is hard stuff he might not be right in the head which would be understandable IMO.

Hey Boob... looks like your boy's mellon isn't quite right!

Priest Holmes, RB KC

News: KCChiefs.com reports head coach Dick Vermeil confirmed that Priest Holmes (head) isn't expected to play in Week 9. The veteran missed practice Friday and was still "on his way back" from California, where he visited a specialist.

Analysis: Larry Johnson will start in Holmes' absence. Owners with the veteran hope his condition isn't serious and won't keep him off the field for an extended period.

Larry Johnson's worth just skyrocketed in fantasy football. If Priest is out for a while Johnson is the best starting option out there. Priest was always in the top 5 despite giving up 10-15 touches to Johnson, now Johnson will get the 25 touches per game and Priest won't steal them away!!!

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Quarterback Trent Green worked out with the Kansas City Chiefs' starters on Friday and will start Sunday's game against the Oakland Raiders, coach Dick Vermeil said.

On Thursday, Vermeil had raised the possibility that Green would not start because he had missed so much practice time while in St. Louis for services for his father.

Jim Green, 58, died Oct. 27. His funeral was Wednesday.

Trent Green has made 71 straight starts for the Chiefs, a team record for quarterbacks, since coming over from St. Louis in a trade in 2001.

From our friends at PFT:

A league source tells us that the players in Kansas City are teetering toward mutiny due to what they perceive to be excessive intensity on the part of Chiefs coach Vermeil.

Vermeil simply has been pushing them too hard, with in-season practices of 2 hours and 45 minutes in full pads.

We're also told that Vermeil never eases off of the sense of urgency, and that it's mentally and physically wearing the players down.

It's an old-school approach to a game that has changed much over the past decade or so. In-season practices and even training camp generally are less strenuous, for a variety of reasons. The proliferation of offseason workouts give coaches many more opportunities to teach their systems, lightening the agendas for July and August. Also, with true free agency in the NFL, teams realize that factors such as grueling practices could keep a guy from coming to town.

As we see it, Vermeil's decision to push the team hard this year indicates that he doesn't plan to be back in 2006 -- since it suggests that he isn't worried about his ability to attract or retain available players. But he still needs to make it through 2005, and the concern in the locker room is that a team with Super Bowl potential is being kept from fulfilling that promise by a head coach who is simply squeezing them too tightly.
