Old age catches up to Chiefs

http://www.kansascity.com/mld/kansascity/sports/football/nfl/kansas_city_chiefs/13039886.htm

JASON WHITLOCK

SAN DIEGO — The funny thing about old age is everyone sees it on you long before you realize the toll it’s taken on your body.

You get out of bed a little stiffly and assume you’re just having a bad day. You lose 30 seconds on your 1-mile pace and blame it on the breakfast you skipped.

You fly out to the land of sun and fun, and Antonio Gates runs rings around you, Shawne Merriman runs over you, and the San Diego Chargers maintain a double-digit lead most of the afternoon before settling for a 28-20 victory, and you think a poor first half explains everything.

“Obviously, it’s two games — the first half and the second half,” Chiefs coach Dick Vermeil rationalized after his team’s eight-point loss to the Chargers. “In the first half, we were zero for 6 in third-down conversions, and they were staying on the field. In the second half, we do a much better job, but we get down there and settle for three points rather than touchdowns.”

That, of course, is one possible explanation for the Chargers outscoring the Chiefs 21-3 in the first 30 minutes and the Chiefs outscoring the Chargers 17-7 in the final 30 minutes.

The truthful explanation, however, is that the Chiefs looked way too old, way too slow and way too out of date to keep pace with the Chargers. More than at any time this year, the Chiefs looked stale on Sunday inside Qualcomm Stadium.

They looked like a team that hasn’t evolved offensively in the last three years — all the pre-snap shifting and motion seem pointless now — and doesn’t have an in-his-prime, big-time playmaker on either side of the ball.

Take away returner Dante Hall, and KC’s Pro Bowlers all looked like San Diego table scraps.

Gates laid claim to Tony Gonzalez’s title as the league’s best tight end, catching 10 passes for 145 yards and three touchdowns. Gates, a third-year pro, toyed with Kansas City’s veteran safeties Sammy Knight and Jerome Woods. Knight couldn’t tackle Gates, and Woods couldn’t cover Gates.

Merriman, a rookie linebacker, dominated the Chiefs’ aging offensive line in pass-rush situations, recording two sacks. Merriman muscled past nine-year vet Jason Dunn and forced a Trent Green fumble. Merriman also got the best of future Hall of Famer Willie Roaf.

“They did a good job; hats off to them,” Roaf said. “I had a tough day.”

Rookie defensive end Luis Castillo also enjoyed success against KC’s offensive line. Castillo was credited with 1.5 sacks. The Chargers sacked Green four times and pressured him all afternoon.

“They hit (Trent) too many times,” Vermeil said.

Dunn added: “They attacked us from the outside. That’s what we do best — attack the corners.”

But... but.... why should they have to evolve? This is the NFL. Nothing changes. No one ever makes adjustments. The number one ranked offense can operate on it's reputation not reality.

“They hit (Trent) too many times,” Vermeil said.

San Diego had Trent for an appetizer. I think our defense is going to have a meal.

Jason usually cuts you no slack, they are old. They have been told for several years now the window of opportunity was closing. Obviously they are not what they used to be offensively.

Besides we will just BOOT your A$$ to death, according to NFL.com the Chefs own the single game record for

Well the Donks have had 5 homes games so far and the Chiefs only 3. We will see how it plays out. Enjoy your mid-season Super Bowl while it last. But regardless of what happens in the AFC West I can sleep well knowing that the Donks 3000 pound gorilla will be here in Indy waiting to take care of them in the usual beat down fashion.

You gotta find your positives where you can....Watching Manning's ritual playoff beating of the Donks is not a bad consolation prize especially if the Colts can roll that up into a Super Bowl W.

The Chiefs looked like crap on Sunday for alot of the game, anyone could have seen that. I don't blame it on age though ,I blame it on Al Saunders' gutless game planning. Once Trent started going downfield, taking advantage of The Charger's crap secondary, The Chiefs were able to keep pace with The Chargers ,but unfortunately it was too late. This probably is the last chance the Trent/Gonzo/Holmes version of The Chiefs has to do some damage in the playoffs. But as long as Al Saunders calls the same gameplan against every team and doesn't take advantage of individual team's weaknesses, it will just be another wasted season.

Also the O-line played with no heart. Roaf holding!...wtf is that!?

Last time I checked, the Chargers needed a big defensive stand near the goal line one time, and another time the Chiefs were close and turned the ball over. So that's potentially 14 points on the carpet. Old age has nothing to do with it. I laugh when middle aged (40-60???) call people in their 30s old. What the hell would you call them at 75-90, then??? I'm no apologist for the big red, but they came off a punishing game at Miami. Trent's dad died. So there are always other factors. It's not like the Chargers ran them out of the stadium.

Kyle Johnson and Dewayne Carswell have more TD catches than Gonzalez's.

The Broncos ain't going no where. No Super Bowl in your future either pal.

Your team hasn't proved it can go on the road to Indy and win. What road game did you show that kind of performance that will be needed to pull that off?

We will end up 10-6 and make the playoffs same as your team.

Larry Johnson will never be the terror Priest WAS. Kennison is just about washed up...MORE WASHED UP...But the real strength of that team was always the OL...Gates ran right thru Knight, who is no spring chicken either. Denver has about a handfull of players that are getting up there...Lynch, Nalen, Anderson, Pryce, Rod...but these players with the possible exception of Lynch haven't experienced a major dropoff... overall, the Broncos are pretty young, particuliarly along the DL.

At the begining of the year I said Gates was better than Gonzo and all the Chef fans and some Bronco fans said I was wrong. You could see it happening last year Gates was taking the torch I must admit though the major reason for Gonzo's drop off is that KC just isn't throwing him the ball anymore. They did get back to him a little last week.

Gonzo is just not as explosive anymore. Green also seems to have a little less zip. The Oline is no where close to their dominance of a year ago, much less 2 years back. KC Fan should be concerned that their O is going to need a complete overhaul and they still haven't solified their D. How many years does LJ have left before he is a FA, 2? Doubt Diaper boy wants to stay. What will happen to their Cap when they retire and the bonuses start hitting the books? The future just does not look bright for them.
