View Full Version : VOTE #1: Referendum on Rep.
Taco John
10-29-2005, 02:09 AM
This vote will last throughout the weekend, with the final vote taking place on Monday and ending Tuesday Night / Wed Morning at 12:00am PST.
Vote #1 is a simple question. Should we have a rep system or should it be abolished completely. The question here isn't whether you want the rep system in one way or another. It's a simple "Yes I want a rep system of some sort" or "No, just do away with the whole thing." And of course, the third choice "I abstain and will just go with the flow."
If the vote comes out "yes" then on Monday we'll vote on the various proposed systems. If the vote comes out "No" then we'll turn the whole thing off and it gets put away for good.
Please vote and leave any comment you care to on why you voted (or dont).

I for one, voted yes. I like the comments and while it's been a headache ever since the upgrade, I don't wish to throw the baby out with the bathwater.

I find the whole thing perplexing and confusing. I've seen some grade-A idiots with huuuuuge amounts of rep who seem to have gained it just by endlessly posting drivel and getting all their asinine buddies to vote for them. Personally, I set much more store by WHO's given me the rep than by how much I have.
I probably should have voted yes because I do like the feature, but puhr-lease, it really shouldn't be taken too seriously, hence I abstained....

I'd also like to point out that the only time I've done any shameless repwhoring was when all my hard-earned rep went up in smoke - that was a traumatic time I must confess (plus everyone was at it or so it seemed!)

I like the way it is on CP.
If you want to "play nice" and use the rep system you can, and if you don't you still can get/give the comments it just doesn't impact you or the other person...

I voted no and to just do away with the whole system. Mainly b/c it's caused a lot of problems over the past few years. You neg rep someone and end up with PM's... why did you do that, you don't have to like my opinion, you're an A-hole etc. I honestly have gotten to the point that I could care less if someone neg reps me or not. But, it used to bother me as well so I can see why some people take it so seriously.
I would've voted yes if I thought we could definitely get the mass public to vote for a rep system without bars or points...only comments. Don't know if everyone will go for that or not though so I say just dump the whole thing and find something else fun we can play with.
I really hope that if we do decide to keep the system it will end up as comments only. Too many of us on the Mane have "superstar" egos... We've started taking "rep" too seriously!

So if you want to do away with rep points, but keep the comments, which option should you vote for?
I say yes It is a fun feature and has been enjoyed by many ever since it was introduced and for those who don't like the feature it is very eash to ignore.
I love to be able to make quick comments on the posts I enjoy. It would be a shame to lose the feature just because some abuse it or because it may not be accurate, who cares it's fun.

I would think you have to keep it given how many people are addicted to it. It's good for business. When you get people clamouring for their rep dots that's good for the manes hit count..... or so it would seem.
Of course, deleting entire threads down in the "rep light district" where all the bad boys hang out works against you. :giggle:

I liked the rep system when it first came out, but some people take it way too seriously which makes it not as much fun. Plus the posts that get the most rep are smart-azz remarks that make people laugh, not insightful football posts, which means smart-azzes carry the most rep on what should be a football forum.
That said I voted just go with the flow, I don't care either way.

Before this recent change the top three reped posters were So Cal, Slap and Kaylor or Spider I would call that some pretty damn good football posters besides if you don't like the feature just don't go through the trouble of opening the rep pages, it's not like it interfears with anything.
I can't imagine anyone not enjoying a nice comment about a post they made.
I think alot of poeple that vote to abolish the feature just want to sound cool and do not want to admit they like the feature.
I would say this issue falls into two catogaries, those that like it and those that hardly know it is even there.

Seriously, I like the rep system personally. You're right about that. I don't like the problems it's caused for other people. We should be talking about football and instead we're biatching about Rep and who has the bigger "schtick". Rep to me is nothing more than a ego building tool. Tell me that Alec doesn't have a larger ego b/c of his rep. Same can be said for a lot of us. The down side is that some of the folks that don't have the rep (and certainly deserve it) are suffering a bit and feeling inferior. Call it penis envy if you'd like, people take this rep thing way to seriously! If you all vote to keep it I say great, I just hope it doesn't somehow end up with a vote to keep it the same way it is now.
Bottom line, I'd much rather do away with it completely then see it continue the way it is now. It'll run more people off. The ONLY rep system I'd support is one that didn't have points or 1 point per poster...PERIOD!
Also I think B-Love hit the nail on the head a little while back. He spent hours upon hours writing and posting historical Broncos posts. People wouldn't rep him for that work (including myself), but they'll turn around and give me rep for calling Chef fan an idiot.

You can't make everyone happy, but if it truly bugs them that much that they don't want to post here because of it, then let them go somewhere else. One thing I don't care for is having to spread reputation around. If The Dave makes a couple of posts in a row that I think are rep worthy (as was just the case in the political forum), why shouldn't I be able to give him that rep?
I also think reps should count the same amount of points regardless of who is giving them. We have newbies simply introduce themselves and they have maxed out rep dots within two posts.

What about REP without the rep, meaning you can still shoot off little comments about posts you like/dis-like but there is none of this STATUS thing. All reps should be anonymous. This way if someone gives you positive rep, you wouldn't be inclined to give that person pos rep as well.
if they give you neg rep, you wouldnt be inclined to do the same.
This should be a must.
Otherwise, the rep system is fine.

Looking at this crisis from an socio-economic/neo-conservative angle we must examine what issues exist within the framework of the current system in place. Many factors will come into play that could possibly put the whole project at risk and quite frankly, this is something that neither side -outside of a select few - wants.
For most Americans the issues drives a divide even among their very household. One couple that I know of, AlecReanos and Rascal, are sharply divided on the issue and have filed for divorce over the matter. Yes, America, the issue is that serious.
Good, wholesome Americans are leaving the country over the issue, such as our friend Slap, who could no longer survive in this dog eat dog world with rep the way it is right now. We must change America, change for the better.
As your elected REPresentative, I will bring this issue to the forefront. I will fight hard for your God-given right to Rep. Good night and God Bless.
Sincerely,

Kidding aside, I miss the feature that allowed you to see who the last 10 recipients of your rep were. I don't hear anyone else talking about that feature so perhaps I'm in the minority on that one. ???

Hmmm, WWDD (What Would Don Do)?
Well Don Majkowksi never had the reputation of being the greatest quarterback to ever play in the NFL. But just because he didn't have the rep doesn't mean he wasn't the greatest. So Don thinks the rep is just a popularity contest. Hmmm interesting.

Do it for me, then I'll have a chance at not going to hell. I'd like to be able to play catch with Don up in heaven, one day. But if I were to kill myself, I'd go straight to hell for sure.

I would advise everyone with a contact on OM to take it down. You will get multiple messages asking how much hookers are and telling his birthday is coming up.
I rather talk to a tree.

Nope, they don't have to worry. And I already know the answer to that question, cuz my B-Day has already past.

Maybe after I get back from Snaps (Fox Valley's best fully nude stip club) tonight. But then again I'd hate for Don to lose his biggest fan.

why do we need little boxes to tell someones reputation. If you truly have a reputation people will know. Throw the whole freaking thing out the window

I like the REP, I think it is a good way to respond to someones comments or ideas, sometimes the poster isn't watching that thread anymore or maybe you haven't gotten to read it until later that week etc.. It was a good idea to shut down the rep whore threads, that whole thing reminded me of someone finding a way to cheat at a video game and trying to impress people by showing them the high score. REP should be for good ideas, good posts, good deeds done, birthdays. It's like rewarding children, after all we are all a strange family here anyway.

I vote yes to poll one and suggest anonymous rep totals for poll two or three. No bars, no way of knowing how much rep someone has. You can only check your own rep in your user CP. I wouldn't mind keeping titles for rep ranges when you mouse-over a portion of the user info in a post. Maybe it could replace "user so and so's avatar". That little mouse-over info is worthless.

I like the comment part, I could care less about the rep points/boxes part. Sometimes those comments can cheer you up, or piss you off.

You beat the JV squad. :P
You may see us again.....if for no other reason than that every other team in the AFC East is awful.

Sounds good. Slap down your personal whipping boys from Indy again and we'll meet you back here for the right to destroy the NFC's offering in XL.

Bite your tongue.
The worst part of our schedule is over - whether we lose to Indy next week or not.
The rest of the AFC East is bad, so we're practically a lock for the division.
So, with that said, I'll take my chances with Tom and Belichick in the playoffs. It will help a lot if Seymour and Dillon are there. Harrison is the biggest, permanent loss so far.

soooooo, back to the rep whoring thread.
my .oooooooo2 cents.....its fun. yeah, so its biased. yeah, so people beat the system. yeah, so i lost a ton of dots in the changeover, so what? i think its interesting to watch people's reactions and it adds some fun to the board. keep the rep fires burning.
The problem with rep is it's absolutely meaningless, I mean I don't know how many times the entire process has been started over. Why worry about something that in 3 months will be gone completely. I enjoyed the messages and the fun you can have with repping. But to use it for any other purpose is silly. I lost interest in it about the third time I got set back to 0.

Funny enough. That's what started the whole Repwhore thread in the first place since we needed a way to restore points lost during that two week thing... see the evil I created Nyah!

I like the system, especially the comments. Sadly, it has inflamed the egos of some posters to sizes larger than those of a wwe wrestler.

Exactly...
What is the criteria for being a poster with alot of rep....having 100 positive rep votes where it's 3 or 4 cronies repping every other post you make, or 100 positive reps from say 65 different posters?

Didn't see this in time to cast my vote but it would have been to keep a rep system. I'll keep an eye out for the next vote for which system.
