A passer rating is a useless stat. Elway never had real good passer ratings I think a couple years in high 80 low 90 but even elway pointed out his passer ratings were almost career lows the three years where Den made superbowl and got killed. Until shanny went to Den his ratings were low.

Yeah, and there is Nobody I would rather have under center than ELWAY. Nobody in the History of the game.
Or in it's FUTURE.

Passing rating is very overrated, but its still pretty amazing that Otto Graham is that high on the list. He's way out of his era, which is phenomenal, considering the rules in effect during his career.

C'mon SLAP, just come out and say it. Passing rating is almost irrelevant.
It is amazing to me that a QB's Passing rating and his WINS (accumulated) are looked on by some people as being just the same thing, STATS...
I can't remember whose Sig stated, "There are LIES, DAMNED LIES, and STATISTICS..."

It's just another measuring stick in the pond of talent...I think it's relevance is even less after the rediculous changes to defenders.
If the refs had simply enforced the rules that existed, and not let NE MAUL in their second SB, none of this would of happened...kickers and secondary have to protest...
For kickers, let look at the changes...some good, some bad...first they moved the goal posts back to the back of the end zone...good move...then they moved kickoffs from the 40 to the 35, then the 30...then they made a "special" ball tighter wrapped for kickoffs...then they changed the rule for a kick that goes out of bounds...
For DB's, if Ronnie Lott or Atwater were still in the league, they would be serving suspensions...What are you supposed to lead with?...your johnson hangin' out? It used to be you could have whatever contact before the ball was in the air...that changed...then they brought in the 5 yard rule...they changed the ball so it was easier for a QB to throw it...nothing was more ludicrous than the phantom call against Bailey last week...he barely touched him...Burress would charge Bailey and push off to get seperation, yet wasn't called once...totally obvious and repeated at least on three passes...probably happened more when the camera wasn't on him...then there is that crazy rule that you have to look back to the ball...talk about a judgement call...
The "Official Line" is that both the WR and Defender have an equal right to the ball...that is a line of crap equaling the "Light at the end of the tunnel" that flew out of MacNamara's flatulance when he asked for about 700,000 troops or the assertion that the UN President isn't on the take...totally absurd...

"If you want to inspire confidence, give plenty of statistics. It does not matter that they should be accurate, or even intelligible, as long as there is enough of them. "

It is pretty remarkable, like you say; considering the era, clutching/grabbing & no late hit penalties per se.
Another distinction that is almost unbelievable is that Graham led his teams to the championship game, something like nine years in a row or something astounding like that.
He was celebrated in his time, but he hasn't gotten nearly the acclaim due his achievements.
IMO, could've played and excelled into todays game, no problemo.

He played in the Championship Game nine times in ten years, winning seven times.
