Willis McGahee knows all about LaDainian Tomlinson's impressive go-for-the-cycle performance last week against the 1-4 Raiders. How the Chargers running back, who ran for a touchdown, caught for another and even threw a touchdown pass in last week's rout, already has 652 yards rushing on 133 attempts through Week 6.

In McGahee's mind, there is no comparison between him and Tomlinson.

"I'm the best back,'' the Buffalo Bills starter said this week. "Case closed.''

Truth is, McGahee has five more carries and 48 less rushing yards than Tomlinson, making him the NFL's fifth most productive running back as the 3-3 Bills head into Sunday's contest against the 1-4 Raiders at the Coliseum.

If will and strength of mind factor into the equation, McGahee might have a valid point.

He sweated and worked to recover after three ligaments in his left knee were torn in his final college game at Miami, the Jan. 2003 Orange Bowl national championship contest. The Bills took a chance and made him a first-round draft pick, allowed him to sit out the season to rehab, then made him a permanent starter ahead of veteran Travis Henry in '04, a move that sparked the Bills from an 0-4 start to a 9-7 finish.

It was last season's revival that prompted the supremely confident McGahee to have a message tattooed on the back of his neck: "Guess Who's Back".

McGahee said the adversity is part of what drives him to be the best.

"Oh, yeah, your character, your heart, and I've got a very strong mind, so I'm not going to let anything bring me down,'' said the second-year back, who turned 24 on Friday and has posted rushing touchdowns in each of Buffalo's last four games.

Is McGahee better than Tomlinson?

"I'm not even getting into that one. That one I'm going to leave (alone),'' said Bills coach Mike Mularkey, who has turned his offense over to McGahee and veteran quarterback Kelly Holcomb. "I'm never going to compare players. No players. Never will do that."

This week, McGahee emphasized his importance to his team -- Buffalo is 9-1 when he rushes for 100 or more yards -- by running around the practice field in Orchard Park, N.Y., on Wednesday, smacking himself with an imaginary riding crop after scoring a TD in a drill.

"I'm a workhorse, a fine breed!'' McGahee said. "You're not going to find too many like this.''

Mularkey believes his running back is stronger than he was in 2004, when McGahee finished with 1,128 rushing yards -- second-most in franchise history for a first-year running back -- and amassed over 100 yards in seven of his 11 starts.

"With Willis, it's two different years -- one year, he's still coming back from an injury where he was still testing it and he hadn't been tackled in a couple of years. He was still feeling his way through holes in training camp,'' Mularkey said. "This year, without Travis Henry here, he came in and knew he was the starter.

"He came in here with some confidence in his health. And I think the health thing made his offseason workouts even better. I think he's stronger and faster."

About time this Flava Clown came out with some hot air...

Call me when he has a TD pass, reception and rush in the same game, ala LT

I never have a problem when a runningback says this... It may or may not be true, but I love a runningback with this kind of confidence...

I tell ya what, he ain't bad, he may not be the best, but if we judge by stats you gotta look at the D's the played against and stuff...don't like that. I gotta agree with Taco. I want a RB with Attitude...thus the reason I liked Portis...he thought he was the best and went out and TRIED to prove it. If I'm a bills fan i like this because he's the only real attitude they have. I really wouldn't care if any guys on our team came out and said they were the best, as long as they were trying to prove it on the field.

I don't mind if a RB or any player for that matter thinks they are the best. But it is when they go public saying this crap is when they can get themselves into a big jam. Portis thought he was the best and look at him now.

I think you can make a case for Tiki Barber being better than LT...he finished last year over 300 yards ahead of him in total yards, and had a better ypc avg as well. Either way it doesn't seem to be a slam dunk for LT IMO.

Personally I think he is preparing for some contract talks after the season. Didn't Buffalo get him for the cheap because of his injury concerns.

He dropped in the draft some(was going to be a top 5 pick probably), but Buffalo did pick him with the 22nd overall pick so he should have a pretty nice contract still.

He's playing like a top 5 pick though, so he may want that kind of money soon, never know.

No I'm not. Observe:

LaDanian Tomlinson: (rushing) 339/1339 yards/3.9 ypc, 17 TD's
(receiving) 53 catches/441 yards, 8.3 ypc, 1 TD
Total yards: 1780 yards, 18 TDs

Tiki Barber: (rushing) 322/1518 yards/4.7 ypc, 13 TD's;
(receiving) 52 catches/578 yards, 11.1 ypc, 2 TD's
Total yards: 2096 yards, 15 TDs

Note that Barber got one less start that Tomlinson and still averaged 20 yards more per game, had a much higher rushing and recieving average per play and did it on an offense with a rookie QB starting.

Now why do you think I'm kidding?

I love any player with that level of confidence, too. But running your mouth isn't confidence. It's just running your mouth. Anyone who has to run his mouth off like that is either not nearly as confident as he says or his mama never taught him any manners. You never saw TD, Floyd Little or John Elway talk that way.

Give me quietly confident, any day, over this stuff.

It's no longer LT and nothing else...Brees, Gates, McCardell...it's open for discussion whether he's the best runner, let alone the best player.

Tiki had a better season than LT did last year (your stats are impressive). I think Tiki is a top 5 back - but LT is probably a little better.

It's because he's playing in Buffalo, it's a small market and he needs to do whatever to get publicity and have people know his name. Those endorsements will start piling up now because of this flavor clown act on McGahee's part.

Entertainer first, football player second...maybe he should do a riverdance next time he scores a TD.

Tiki Barber is in no way the best RB in the league. The reason Tiki's numbers were higher than LT's last year is because SD actually had a passing game whereas NY did not. Tiki was their offense.

LT is the best overall back in the NFL, but more importantly, he might be the best back since Walter Payton stepped off the football field that final time and that includes the great Barry Sanders. The guy is just a phenom and quite frankly, there is no one that can stop him (except Denver in Denver and we still have a tough time of it).
