View Full Version : Old rivalry reborn?

Denver and SD.
This has become the weakest of rivalries in the AFC west, however, looking at the Division, KC is about to become Cardinal like. Vermeil may retire along with their QB, half their Oline, QB. Priest and Gonzo look like they are 1/2 of what they were. Oak is just a mess. They spent big $$$ on Moss and Jordan yet they look pathetic. Moss I believe has seen his best years, Porter is overrated. They have made some serious investments on the Oline and may still get a return, but it has not been a good start. Collins is getting up there and the Dline interior is about ready to retire. Woodson is gone after this year IMO. They look like a team far from respectability. That leaves us and SD to battle for the division for the next few years.
It has been a long time since SD and Denver truely hated each other, if ever. Fouts led SD vs Morton/Deberg/Young Elway. The Rivalry was more Oak/SD back then. I have grown so accustomed to hating Oak and KC that SD has been an afterthought, but that may be about to change.
Both teams are young and in good shape for the near future. We have 2 1st round draft picks and SD has Rivers as trade bait. Both teams are also in good cap shape.

It will definitely intensify, but the rivalry with the other two will always be there, that's how the 3 win raiders can beat us at home in the snow, the pure hatred for one another.

Sandy Eggo has an interesting problem coming up. They traded their backup to Myamuh and will probably go with Rivers next year, leaving Brees to the FA market. They will be looking for a backup to Rivers, I suspect, and I think that will be their Archilles' Heel for a couple of years; it isn't certin that Rivers will develop as well as Manning has. Maybe they surprise and keep Brees and so on, but I think Brees is looking for a BIG payday and that would be a lot of money in one position. Either way, Sandy Eggo will have some issues next year. LT is going to be there, but there may be some limits to that if Rivers is limited in productivity.
I do think that SD will be the main compeititon for the Broncos the next few years just as has been pointed out above. However, they have Marty and that diminishes them somewhat, IMO.

Den/SD will never rival that of Den/KC or Den/Oak....the reason why is easy, they've never been a problem for more than just a couple of consecutive seasons at any time (by my reckoning...and it could be wrong but working off the cuff here, it seems to occur for about three seasons per decade at best).
I equate the Chargers with an occasional headache....nothing that can't be handled whenever it pops up.

The way I've heard it is that keeping Brees is their intent and using Rivers as trade bait. Next year would be the year that the Chargers would pull this off because that can absorb that huge cap hit and still be like 10 mil below the cap.

If you go to the Chargers board at Sign On San Diego, those bastards hate Denver with a passion. They have a severe inferiority complex with the Broncos, a lot like the Chiefs fans.

I agree. They're keeping the Bur-lur-make-ur.
But - wouldn't it be great if they unloaded Rivers to some lesser NFC team - maybe Detroit - and he became the next great NFL QB? Then, the Chargers would've lost - in just 4 years:
1) Mike Vick
2) Eli Manning
and then . . .
3) Phillip Rivers
It seemed I recall several commentators calling Rivers the best of the Big 3 QBs in the draft that year, too (along w/ Eli Manning and Ben Roethlisberger).

I like LT too much to hate on the Chargers. The other problem is they are the Chargers. I mean does anyone really expect them to be anything more than a flash in the pan?

I dunno, their crappiness is what led me to the Broncos as a kid so I can't really hate them with a passion for any reason other than their being divisional rivals. Now KC or Oakland I would hate even if they weren't in our division, sorta like Baltimore.... and New England ....and Indianapolis....and the Jaguars...ah hell the entire afc...

Indy had the first pick and took Melon Head. Good fortune fell upon SD and they took Ryan Leaf, and brilliant assessor of talent that I am, I thought SD got the better guy.

I doubt this will become a serious rivalry until they start consistently beating us. The problem is this year's team is good so that could become a problem if the Broncos don't take them seriously.
I wish the press wasn't so giddy about the Broncos. It feels like we are getting setup for the big pimp slap down.

That is rather rude...so don't even bother....

I'm not sure how to formulate the adjectives, but here is a translation manual if you want to make insults in German.

Rivers has gone on record now stating that he wants to start next year, in San Diego or otherwise.
If the Chargers stick with Brees, Rivers may be inclined to give back some of the bonus money and take some from his new team he's traded to.
It's going to be a tough decision and it will depend on how well Brees does this year and how far he takes them but River's value will probably be at his highest. It's early but according to some draft pundits, aside from Leinhart there isn't going to be another top notch quarterback that falls within the top 100 next year. Though that could change if a couple of quarterbacks decide to enter next year. There's going to be several teams salivating at a chance to pickup a young quarterback with tremendous upside, who has had a chance to ease his way into the NFL for two years and one that will not cost a lot against the cap but will most likely be costly (in terms of draft picks or players) to acquire.
I think the Chargers would be wise to take a deal where they acquire a couple of picks, one of which will be a high pick and a good/decent player to go along, as long as Rivers cooperates to lessen the cap hit and get his chance to start somewhere.

Is Rivers still putting up close to 450+ Bench in the weight room over there?

So is there no hope that this could become a rivalry, or have those lines already been established. I think with the passion we have come to hate Indy, a few years of tight Division races could spark a little hate.

Actually, SD's problem with Rivers is not as bad as it is made out to be, and it is a nice problem to have. They could easily absorb the cap hit since they are millions of dollars under it. Next year his pay is around $650K, which is a very low pay for a potentially great back-up QB. So, if no one wants to give SD what they want, they can just sit on Rivers regardless of his desires. BTW, forget about Feeley, he was just an add on Miami was trying to get rid of, and SD is really not interested in him (he is due a couple of Mill next yr, and then 3 Mill the yr after).
I still don't hate SD. I don't know why but they probably don't even rank in the top 5 or 6 of teams I really dislike. I don't know why, but thats just how it is. I feel sorry for them more then anything else. Their recent success doesn't change that. They still have CHOKEnheimer as a coach which makes all their regular season success mute in the long run. They'll never win in the playoffs.

During the early 80's the Chargers had a great team and I hated them because my brother loved them. Joiner, Jefferson, Muncie, Winslow, Fouts, Bryd.. I hated them all.
