6. Broncos KR-CB Darrent Williams
Season stats (six games): 25 tackles, seven passes defended
Week Six stats: five tackles, four passes defended
Last week’s ranking: n/a
Stock: RISING
Williams’ recent play has turned a lot of heads, and what he did Sunday against the Patriots — a team that reportedly was eyeing him in the second round of the draft before the Broncos snagged him (the Pats traded down and got Ellis Hobbs instead) — has put him in the spotlight. He made five tackles Sunday, most of which were of the wood-laying fashion, and also broke up four passes. He also pressured Tom Brady on a CB blitz when the Patriots had the ball, down eight points, forcing Brady to intentionally ground the ball, effectively ending the Pats’ threat.
Honorable mention (in no particular order)
Broncos CB Domonique Foxworth

This downtime by Champ has been nothing but good for Foxworth.
My hope is that Paymah, Walls and Alexander are raising their expectations for CB. There is nothing like internal competition to build a team.

I heard good things about him but I'm blind as a married man in a titty bar. I can't see nothing. My imagination and memory are started to getting confused. Cornerbacks actually do check players on the line right? (j/k)

He's playing with pretty good intensity, but he needs to prove to me that he can play a little smarter. That personal foul penalty at the beginning of the game was awful. He did play well after that, but I can't stand mindless stupid penalties.

WOW! That link serves up some SERIOUS CROW!
That confirms one of my least-popular arguments around here . . . that no matter how much we wish otherwise, we fans - even us smart ones (we know who we are, right? hmmm... ) . . . don't have enough data to be anything remotely like an "expert" - and when it comes to the draft, we're not even "well informed." For example, mea culpa, I wanted to trade up to get Pac-Man Jones. I was willing to swap our #2 and Wash's or our #1 next year for Pac-Man.
Can I say "Duhhhh . . . "?
.
For any of you scoffing at this, here's the final proof:
This pre-season, when ALL OF US were drooling over Dorsett Davis and debating whether to keep Terry Pierce or Jashon Sykes at outside linebacker, I don't remember anybody saying:
"We should cut Dorsett, and keep Demetrin Veal . . . "

What is your take on Curome Cox?
I know Shanny really likes Curome. He made a couplla comments during training camp. I thought he was "talking him up" for other teams b/c we were so loaded at CB . . . but now Shanny's moved him to safety (at least halfway there). I think that's a reflection of how much he likes him. I did see Curome commit an out-of-control penalty on the punt return team last week - he was defending the Pats "gunner," and the guy gave Curome a real shot. Well, Curome circled around and cheap-shot the guy. A 15-yard penalty. Maybe he's a hot-head.

I wanted a cornerback anyways, Darrent Williams wasn't at the top of my list though, I still thought it would be nice to get one.
I wanted Stanford Routt (went to Oakland) or Ronald Bartell (St. Louis).
I must say i much rather have Williams. Shanahan finally nailed a trio of cornerbacks.

I think we are at the point of realization that Foxy and DWill can start in this league. Now if Paymah (who was the targeted CB in this draft) can step up and give Shanny the Trifecta, then our CB will be set for at least 4 years, being 4 deep.
I think Shanny did luck out a bit here. Darrent was drafted to be a ST guy, playing maybe some Dime packages. Paymah, who has developed the least, was the targeted replacement for Herndan as our #3 CB. Foxy was taken simply because Shanny was amazed he was still on the board.
Let us not overlook the fact that the play of DWill and Foxy during camp allowed us to part ways with Middlebust and get JE, who has been a key addition to the DLine rotation.

If anyone saw the clips they showed of Darrent on ESPN when he was drafted, he didn't look big enough to play corner for a Div 1 school yet alone the pros against the increasing number of 6-3 WR's.
Eating crow is alot easier when the player excels...eating crow when you liked a player and he stinks tastes horrible.
I think Darrent has surprised even the Broncos with his agressive play. I don't think I have ever seen a player his size hit with such ferocity and wrap up his tackles so well, especially for a rookie. It's unreal how hard he hits for his size. Totally fearless. Great speed. Darrell Green never hit like that.

The Broncos struck flat out gold in the UDFA market. (Should I list them?)
The Broncos stole Ian Gold. (Got back Keith Burns)
The Broncos brought an intact DL. You got chemisty...just add coaching.
(Oh yeah. We stole the coach too.)
The Broncos bring in one of the best recievers of all time to either get a roster spot or make the team better. They then have the good sense to cut him loose one of the greatest recievers of all time.
The Broncos took a flyer on one of the most controversial RB of all time and again have the good sense to cut their losses.
The Broncos Champ Bailey off season deal just keeps getting larger.
The Broncos got back Trevor Pryce for less money.
The Broncos brought in one of the best punters in the league.
This has to be one of the best Broncos off seasons on record and for nine months the ground zero of our conversation has been Jake Plummer? What a bunch of moo cows. The media has released you. Feel free to enjoy the obvious.

He impresses me plenty. He missed about a quarter of football this season when he bruised his ribs against Tennessee, but he's playing behind the weakest Rams O line in several years. He's scored four touchdowns in his last three games and I think he'll go off big time against the Saints this weekend.
Very happy with DJ Williams, though. I really can't see the Broncos using first round picks on running backs. Not when we can mine gold in later rounds or turn around guys like Droughns and Dayne.

No question Denver has an uncanny ability to turn lead into gold at RB, and Shanahan reportedly had some very animated discussions with his coaches (& Ted Sunquist) over taking Tatum Bell as high as the Broncos took him.
The curse, if there is one, has surrounded those damnable DB positions...and, by the way, the Broncos still need a really good FS.
Darrent Williams & Foxworth seem to have turned around the karma...now, perhaps...maybe...with a little luck, Mike & Co. won't be so anal...and stubborn..drafting CBs right & left dating back to his first year...to no avail.
..but, damn, it's been a trying experience...Darrius Johnson, Billy Jenkins, Dale Carter, O'Neil, Middlebrooks...sheesh.

It's hard to pin it on anything specific, but to me there are three obvious improvements...if the Browncos sucked, they wouldn't of made the team...instead...most of the first teamers from last year are gone, and last years second stringers are gone.
Special teams have taken a dramatic turn upward...Burnsie pushed out Pierce and is leading coverage that hasn't looked this good in a long time...Saurkraut is punting like a demon and I don't care if his kickoffs are low...they are hitting the goal line and beyond...he had three touchbacks last week...he also nailed a couple punts inside the 20. Now if we can just keep his nose clean....
Jake playing within himself...evidently he reads the mane and decided to teach Taco a lesson for writing him off.
I forgot...one more thing...the fantastic play by Darrent Williams not just as a nickle and returner, but as a legitimate corner first....and the great play by Foxy...both have played great for rookies...Darrent has been a phenom so far...if people haven't noticed, he's been literally a shut down corner for us...AS A ROOKIE...
He had 5 tackles and 4 pass defensed last week. Those are pro bowl numbers! Whoot. Foxy isn't that far behind, but if DW was playing as well as Foxy, we would be happy! I am dead serious...Even Paymah seems to be coming around after a slow start typical of a rook, but even he seems to be getting better...I don't know if it's Champ, Lynch, Slovik or whatever, but even with some injury, the secondary is playing pretty good. Getting pressure out of the front helps ALOT, but you have to give some big props to our new corners...alot of people scratched their heads...but Darrent and Foxy have been great and Paymah is making strides...that's a stone cold coup, coupled with the coup on the front line and the play of Gold....
This isn't a "dominant" defense, but it's resilient as hell right now. When you see Gold now and they say he's 223, you don't laugh your ass off...he looks like a legitimate LB now...not a big LB by any stretch, but he has thickened for sure...He looks a legit 225 now IMO...I think he was playing right at 200 before he got hurt.

Unfortunately, I cannot catch much of the games here in Shanghai, so i cannot see every play. But from the highlight packages -- its amazing how Darrent is playing. He has top 5 pick talent and he's delivering. His closing speed on WR's is amazing, he always takes the proper angle and wraps up and finishes like crazy. And this is not even mentioning his hops and return abilities, can't wait to see him finally snatch up a pick and take it to the house.

Well, get over it...Anderson, Bell and Dayne are doing just fine and Cecil is there for an emergency. RB is the least of our worries..
Plus, you forget we get Washington's first round pick in a much deeper draft. We pulled a coup in the draft except for Watts, who looks like a probable bust at this point. He has sucked so bad he won't see the field without injury at this point. MoC was a luxury pick for Bobby Turner...Mo had all the talent to be a big time back, he just was an idiot. Happens all the time...look at our 2003 draft but you don't see the media climbing on our backs for that pathetic draft.
Who knew that we were going to trade Willie to boot. Turns out we were thin at CB unless you wanted Walls and Roc Alexander out there...*shudders*...
Paymah has been getting on the field some and hasn't totally sucked, so it looks like three keepers. Darrent is playing like an all pro, so that's all done...Foxy is playing like a starter...if Paymah can just be a decent player to might take a year or two to develop...we hit the freaking jackpot...plus we get a motherload of picks next year...with some comp picks, we are going to have more first day picks than you can shake a stick at. I'm serious. Hayward is going to get us a #3 if he stops sucking....Kenoy will bring a pick...at any rate...we will have alot of picks next year...lots to talk about. or bitch about...one thing is certain...next years draft will be a busy day here at OM.
First things first....on to the front...SLAY THE GIANTS...

You’ve been defended by some of the best corners in the league. How does Darrent Williams look from a wide receiver’s standpoint?

Darrent Williams is -- honestly, to me -- he’s one of the quickest guys I’ve ever gone against. I’ve never seen anybody whose change of direction is that fast. As long as he studies the game and works at the little things, I think he’s going to have a great career. He’s definitely one of those guys I want to watch play this game for a long time

How much does Shanny really have to do with evaluating RB talent? Does he leave that mostly in the hands of Turner? I know Turner really wanted MoC and that Shanny threw him a bone on that pick.
I think as far as CB goes it is not as bad as some think. James was a good talent that was never healthy for us (ala Middlebrooks), Deltha can play but did not have the mindset Shanny wanted in a CB. Carter just became a head case after getting paid. e did make a couple nice FA pickups in Gordan and Crockett.

Paymah seems to be getting better. He made a few plays last game. He's coming around and making progress. I remember Shanny saying in an interview right before the Houston preseason game that Paymah had the biggest upside of all of them. If we end up hitting on him too....it would be a truly amazing draft. I think Chris Myers is going to challenge for a starting job next season. This draft could end up being extremely strong.

People tend to forget that cornerbacks are suppose to struggle as rookies. We all remember Ed McCaffrey torching 1st round stud Shawn Springs for 2 TDs in a week 2 game in 1997. The Paymah hate makes me sick, too.
Do you think Paymah is struggling with playing zone on this level? I remember Sundquist claiming that Paymah was the best press corner in the draft.

Shanahan has a LOT to say when the team is considering a RB. I was questioning this myself when the Broncos selected Maurice Clarett, because I knew for a fact that he was almost the exact opposite of what Shanahan looks for from a personality/character perspective.
First, Shanahan had talked openly in the press about the possibilities with Clarett the year before, so I knew there was interest. Second...as I understand it, Bobby Turner was almost desperate to get a shot at the kid, so Shanahan overlooked the 'other' factors and sided with Turner's gut feeling. (also, the pick was a comp pick...a third, true, but a comp pick)
High risk, potentially high reward.
So much for that. Move on.
In the past, with Terrell Davis, Olandis Gary, Mike Anderson, Tatum Bell...not to mention several who never made it on the radar...Shanahan would take the recommendations of the scouting staff...review gobs of film, then bring in Bobby Turner & Gary Kubiak to banter around the possibilities.
I'm sure the Maurice Clarett selection was an aberration...deference for a great coach in Turner, so expect Shanahan to wade through the endless scouting reports and miles of film again this year, and select another darkhorse somewhere down the draft line.
Happens every year...like Christmas.

You're right, that idiot really reaches on some of his criticisms. Myers has a long ways to go, but his career path is similar to Nalen's rookie year in 1994.
Both were drafted late, both were cut after training camp, both spent time on the practice squad as rookies and later signed to the 53 man roster.

Darrent moves up to the #5 spot. PFW praises the entire Broncos rookie secondary at the top. I bet Dominique is knocking on the door along with Shawne Merriwoman.

I agree but I can't imagine anyone thought that he would be gone at the bye week rather than the end of the season as you probably meant and everyone else assumed.

No I didnt think it would be this soon but I know that Walls was a goner sooner or later because the Broncos didnt keep him in the offseason to be a 4th stringer who cant play special teams. Ill make another prediction, Walls ends up a Raider.

This week, Darrent moves up to the #4 spot.
PFW writer Eric Edholm calls Darrent, "One of the best rookie corners we’ve seen in a while"

Hey 52 glad to see you back after your venture into the Black Hole.
You get a game ball for dealing with those douches for 3 hours. How was it at the game?

Alright, Im going to have to gloat a little :) Here are my post draft comments (for which I was told I was an optimist for):
<TABLE class=tborder id=post616507 cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=6 width="100%" align=center border=0><TBODY><TR vAlign=top><TD class=alt1 id=td_post_616507>"I think that many of the prognosticators on this board had studied Denver's needs and assumed naturally that the draft would be used to adress those needs. Well, new needs have surfaced recently. It is obvious that Shanny and co. decided to come out of the draft with speed and man-to-man abilities on the corners. They used what they had in picks to address those needs.
The reasons for the picks are fairly obvious. Two division rivals have talented offenses including one who recently acquired the best reciever in football. The Raiders will have an all-out arial attack.
The Chiefs' passing game is secondary to their run game, but it helps to have as much of an advantage as you can when they run the ball so well.
Not to mention the fact that the secondary was roasted again by the Colts in the playoffs.
All in all with Clarett and the Guard from Miami included with the corners, I think that this draft has excellent potential to fill some needs this season as well as in the future. You have to remember to incude the fleecing of the 'Skins in the equation when you evaluate this one as well."

Here's post #2:
"If you guys remember, Darrent Williams was the best corner around at the senior bowl prep camp and he showed well in the game as well. I figured that he showed enough to make it into the 1st round, but I guess the size knocked him back. I'm glad that the good guys got him."

I had a blast! I felt the most safe ever in seven trips to Oakland. I went to a tailgate with 50 Raider fans and they were more than accomodating by treating me to shots and BBQ. I did take my share of torment, though. Some Raider douchebag threw a mop at me and missed while I was taking a leak.
My friend and I were sitting field level around the 10 yard line, but we decided to move behind the Denver bench with 10 minutes left. Al Wilson, Big Money and Rod Smith were having fun, jawing with the Raider fans.
On two occasions, Rod Smith turned around smiled and gave me the thumbs up! My friend was talking to his buddy Nate Jackson on the bench and then started talking to Ian Gold. He yelled, "Ian, we are glad you are back from Tampa Bay, baby!" Ian smiled and saw me wearing my ORANGE 52 (he couldn't see Williams on the back), walked over to the stands with a 1:00 left on the clock, took his playing gloves right off his hands and handed them to us.
That was icing on the cake for a great day.
