AS much as I love Atwater, it's hard to argue against Lott. That said, Atwater's game in SB XXXII was legendary, he was a freaking beast that day. If not for TD he would have been the MVP.
And of course I voted for Atwater and no one else.

Thats the key to me.
I think thats why he got so many votes too ( too many to just be Denver ballot stuffers ). He put a hit on every Packer he touched that day.
From doling out punishment on their 1st drive TD and knocking Freeman (pretty sure) into the Cheerleaders to the last drive and his 3 man Kill Shot ( If you look closely you can see Robert Brooks poor mangled hand w/ fingers shooting out the wrong places due to being caught between the 2 helmets ).
John Elway wasn't the only Bronco still carrying around the 55-10 loss in his head.
Ronnie Lott is on the short list of Safeties that can be considered better than Atwater, but i don't remember him ever having a day like Atwater did in the SB.

Some great players on that list. Lott, Willie Wood, Jake Scott and Washington had huge games for the Cowboys in the SBs.

Had to throw a vote to Hacksaw Reynolds. The rest are Broncos.

Its such an underrated moment in SB History.

I voted for Steve and no one else. I cant believe Jackson from the Bucs is on there. And hes leading a ton of other legendary safeties. Shows the youth of the fans that vote for sure.

Right. Agreed with everything you said about Lott, and I, too, voted for Atwater and no one else.
And speaking of voting, don't you think they should have something of a "straight ticket" option for the Pro Bowl voting? I just vote for Broncos, anyway. The way I see it, none of it makes much sense, anyway, and a well-thought vote is probably a wasted vote. So why not get as many Broncos in as we can?

Sorry to steal the thread...but does anybody have a clip on here of Atwater's infamous hit on Randy Hilliard and Robert Brooks? My VCR is broke right now and I want to see that hit again!

Atwater is my man!!!
I think he'd be more deserving over Lott had he not dropped a wide open easy interception in SB 32.....anyone else remember that?
If he had picked that off....that would be enough for me to give it to him over Lott who has played in I think 4 superbowls...and played well in each..
I give Atwater credit still though...he was still all over the field in SB 32.

There's no shame in placing behind Lott, considering all the top notch safeties that have played in the SB.
Now if we were voting for the best SB performnce by a S, then Steve would probably be the number one guy for the way he sold his body and soul out in SBXXXII. Of course he did drop a sure INT (and some analysts said he would have likely scored on it as well)...but overall one of the best Sb performances to date.

I would like to get a DVD of SB XXXII, but the only one I can find is just an abbreviated version of the game (about 20 mins). Is anyone aware of DVD of the actual game as oppossed to excerpts?
Thanks

Why do people fixate on the one thing Steve Atwater didn't do that day?
Dropping an interception in no way diminished Atwater's impact on that game. From the fumble he forced against Favre to his complete intimidation of the Packers' receiving corps, which was frankly admitted to by Mark Chmura afterwards. He dominated XXXII like no other defensive back ever has an individual Super Bowl game and I've seen about XXX of them.

I'm sure nobody remembers this, since Doug Williams, Timmy Smith, Ricky Sanders and damn near everybody else on their offense had career days, but Redskins' free safety Alvin Walton freaking killed us in Super Bowl XXII.

He was a god that game - just completely inspired! I wish he'd never gone and played for the Jets. I like to pretend that little episode never happened.

Check that. The equally loathsome Eric Brown.
Billy Badass who talked all that yang about upholding the tradition of Bronco hitters at safety, yet who dove under the rug whenever a big ballcarrier came his direction with a head of steam.

Wow. I forgot all about him. Where did he go after he left here? He was relatively young, if I remember correctly.
He was supposed to be an "underrated" signing that year - a young guy who was just beginning to hit stride. He came here from St. Louis, right?
That was the beginning of a few years when free agency wasn't very kind to us.

We actually sent them a couple draft picks for that jerk. I remember seeing him on St Louis' Super Bowl team and thinking he was just a mouthy guy who was out of position a lot. I hated when we traded for him, but tried to be optimistic anyway. He sucked as bad as I initially thought he would, if not worse. I promised myself I would never doubt my own opinion that badly ever again concerning Bronco acquisitions.

Yeah, he was big on being the last one into the pile, but the first one up pointing his finger in the air.

Billy Jenkins.
Wow .... Funny how you can completely omit someone from your memory.
Even after i saw the name i had to search around in my head a little bit.
And then it was mentioned that he came over from St. Louis and i kinda started to remember that too.
I remember Randy Robbins and Alton Montgomery a lot more vividly than Jenkins.
