VOIP is growing fast and is solid technology. One issue has been E911 service. It was not available when residential VOIP came to market. They are getting the software together now so that you can get it in most major metro area. Make sure you have it even if they charge extra.

Can't remember which cable company has Alexandria, probably Comcast. They sell didital phone, which is basically the same except the priority routing is through their backbone. Usually more expensive than Vonage.

No, I get there occasionally for work. I work mostly with cable and telephony companies. Looks like near term travel is NC and Texas

I have a vonage line as a 2nd line in my house. Have had it for a year and use it for business. I've got Comcast for broadband connectivity. On rare occasions I've had some issues but generally it has been awesome. I've started thinking about moving the standard phone to vonage.

I know at least two people who have dumped traditional phone for VoIP based lines for their entire home and have been extremely happy with the decision.
